All right so...

Urahara showed up and gave everyone a hollow pill to get their bankais back and Ice dude froze that Cang Tu guy or whatever who's going to just break out of it anyway. Also Robo Dude is probably dead

Then it turns out that the Leader knew that would happen, because of course he knew, and that it doesn't matter cause now the can Volstaage power up or whatever so they're still fucked.

Now Ichigo's running down Snake Way while the apparently crazy Quincy girl goes super saiyan.

Whatever you think about where we're heading now I can say with certainty that it's better than whatever the fuck Naruto is doing.

Oh hey a bleach thread. All I got to say is that when I looked up to check what page I was one when I was reading this chapter I expected it to be page 5 but it was actually page 15. I think I ended up finishing the chapter in like 2 minutes. I'm not sure how Kubo does it.

It makes a degree of tactical sense if they took the captains bankais just so they wouldn't have them. Even if it weakened the spirit nazis a bit in the process, they'd still have the advantage of the enemy not having access to their strongest weapon.

But then not only do the stolen bankais make the germans weaker... but apparently they knew the captians would figure out a way to get them back anyway. So then... why?

Stealing the bankais had literally no purpose. Both from a narrative perspective and within the story itself. No purpose whatsoever other than to just waste time.
>> No. 85442
>>85437

The only way you could diegetically justify 'just as planned, they got their Bankai back' is if it was a purely psychological thing - like, the original Quincy purges saw a lot of Quincies dying horribly to bankai, so even though these new and improved Quincies are actually stronger than it going up against it still freaks them out, so he concocted a plan to steal the bankai to keep it from causing shakiness and loss of morale in the ranks.

Of course, that's not what happened. And it wouldn't make sense with the type of super-iron fist control this guy has over his army. It was just a complete waste of time.

I think Bach is going "just as planned" just like Aizen did back in the days. I could see that weird event actually making sense later. Maybe he was just gathering some fresh Daten about the zampakutou for instance. Who knows.

For some reason today's chapter drove it home:
I think a big part of why the action in Bleach stopped being compelling is that any attack can be a no sell.

Like, see this? A character's attack got turned back on her. There was a big explosion. Now she's falling out of it all burned and shit.

And it means NOTHING.

She could be mortally wounded or mildly frustrated or anything in between, and there's no way to tell except to wait and see.

Everyone does all these cool attacks and then they connect, at which point sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't and you can never actually tell for at least half a chapter. It's the cheap thrill of "power level" bullshit where the best kind of villian is one who's so strong they never have to actually FIGHT.

I think the reason it stopped mattering is because we have fifty million people fighting fifty million more and you can tell all their stories within fifty chapters without removing most of it. I actually like elements of this fight quite a bit (A silly enemy that plays the hero, fighting against the "villain-looking" Shinigami characters). I mean, it's got humorous elements, and the fact that explaining how a power worked had disastrous consequences. Renji's line about "another villain" was pretty good. The major problem, I think, is that so much of the Quincy arc is so poorly written that I can't really enjoy this fight.

Number 9 is easily explainable really: Final Getsuga Tenshou was the Ichigo version of Uryuu's sanrei glove removal from way back when he fought Mayuri. As Uryuu's ability then gave the ability to absolutely manipulate outer spirit power, Ichigo's gave him the ability to absolutely manipulate his internal spirit power.

The interesting question is whether he would have eventually come to that same state given enough time anyway, without having to deal with the burn out after the fight with Aizen. And another is whether that was his absolute limit or whether he's still growing. Because if FGT was just Ichigo's max power at that point...as a 17 year old kid with a couple years of spirit shenanigans under his belt...well, he's even more of a superbeast than previously thought. Like, it makes sense that the spirit king is interested in him.

And fear is a mental sensation, not a physical one. And since she's obviously still completely mentally cognizant, her explanation that she can't feel fear because her physical body is really really cold doesn't make a goddamn lick of sense.

>A physical state that appears to have no other effect on her mental functions.

Not to beat a dead horse here (or a cold but otherwise functioning horse), but Rukia wasn't even in a physical state of death. No definition of death that I can find refers to body temperature or specific degrees of coldness. Death is defined as a ceasing of bodily functions. None of which Rukia suffered from in any capacity. Moving around, thinking, talking, i.e. doing the exact opposite of what any accepted definition of deah actually means.

This might be hands down one of the stupidest explanations of a powerup I've ever seen. I hate to use the phrase "ass pull", as it's become a catchall for "plot point I didn't like", but this is absolutely an ass pull. Actually no, this isn't an asspull. An asspull would be coming up with a completely new power out of the blue. Changing the established definition of a basic word to get your character out a situation is even worse than that. This was an ass shove.

I am someone who LOVES Rukia and am not particularly highly educated but even I recognised the mechanics of this dealie to be total nonsense just from thinking about it a little. >> No. 86942
>>86929
>>86931

As someone who eats up paranormal internal logic, I thought it was damn interesting and cool. Here's how I interpreted it:

-Rukia's new power is the ability to reduce her body temperature as far as absolute zero.
-Rukia is using magic (reishi) to selectively prevent various negative consequences of this, e.g. dying of full-body frostbite.

She probably barely even needs a sword in this state. Just being directly touched by something that's absolute zero could shatter most physical objects, or so I imagine.

The fear thing also made sense to me. Fear and anger are two of the most physical emotional reactions (people with back injuries that leave them numb below neck/upper torso sometimes report no longer "feeling" angry) and Rukia's body is basically cryogenically frozen at this moment. You could say she's emotionally numb.

Only quibble I had was that Hitsugaya probably wants his schtick back.
>> No. 86944
>>86942

But that make any sense to me. Why does cryo-freezing your body in such a way that you're still conscious stop you from feeling the emotion of fear? It's not explained in terms of body chemistry or anything, she's just super-cold, why does that protect her from what is essentially a psychic attack? If she was so cold that her cells couldn't be attacked by the goop that causes his fear-spell, they should have said so, not this nonsense that it brings her close to death therefore fearless?
>> No. 86946

Bear in mind that Fear is the literal name of this guy's technique, i.e. the black stuff he managed to hit her with at the end of last chapter. In this chapter he bragged that Fear didn't need an open wound to seep into her system- "a simple touch is enough for it to seep in and spread".

So, you know, it's a magical power that works like a poison, named after the effect of said poison. And/or it's literally the abstract concept manifesting as a tangible force because that's generally what magic *is*. The whole conversation on fear is being written so you can interpret it as a discussion on the abstract concept or an analogy explaining the magic power as a boast.
>> No. 86947

>> No. 86950

That would make sense if not for the pages of this douche pseudo-philosophizing on the relationship between fear and life, and the fact that Rukia framed her new powers in those terms - not as an immunity to poison, but an inability to feel fear. You can't even say that she framed it that way as a response to his philosophizing, putting it in his terms even though the truth is different, because she brings up an inability to feel fear BEFORE he started dribbling at the mouth.

It's just stupid bullshit chez Kubo. Not exactly a shocking development.

The whole thing falls apart when you realise Kubo just fucking forgot that none of the shinigami are physical beings. That is their whole premise: they are ghosts who come back to the world of the living to guide the dead to Soul Society and fight Hollows, the ghosts of people who stayed attached to the mortal world too long. Shinigami must possess dummy bodies in order to become physical beings for a period of time, unless you're Ichigo, who still has a living body. There's no disassociation between Rukia's soul and her body; her body is her soul, literally. She doesn't have cells. She doesn't have body chemistry. She doesn't any molecules to freeze.

If you read the beginning of Bleach again, the things I said were explicit or heavily implied. He had rules for his world originally, but he has gradually thrown them all out the window. The "only humans have physical bodies" thing was actually maintained up to the arc with the Fullbringers, though he might broken it before during Hueco Mundo or something and I've just forgotten how many times he forgot.

"Bleach's worldbuilding is highly inconsistent" isn't even an opinion, it's just a fact. And if you haven't noticed that at all, are we reading the same comic?

Put it this way: When the manga puts fear in quote marks, that is an addition by the translator to signal that the alternate interpretation is possible. Same with me capitalizing the F. In Japanese, the two interpretations are possible (and readily evident) by default. Every single time someone said "fear" in both chapters, it was likely written the exact same way.

She pretty explicitly said that she was essentially manually controlling every molecule that composed her, as otherwise they'd be completely still from being lowered to Absolute Zero, and in doing so, his toxin couldn't do shit.
Even if she was referring to actual fear, as opposed to F - The "Fear", it could be said that she was simply choosing not to feel it since she's literally manually controlling every single reaction her body undergoes at the moment.

Just to put this ridiculous debate to rest once and for all, I looked up the raw for the page in question. Here's Rukia's line:

Kanji: ”恐怖”が通じぬ事は貴様にとって”恐怖か”?
Romaji: "Kyoufu" ga tsuujinu koto ni totte "kyoufuka"?

The verb used is 'tsuujinu'. Although the translators have rendered this as "not capable of fear", this is inserting a potential double meaning into the sentence that is not at all present in the original japanese. Tsuuji, with a nu ending which indicates that it's being used as a verb in negation, means 'understanding'.

(Also, apparently, 'bowel movement', but it's pretty safe to say from context that that's not the intended meaning)

In other words, a better accurate translation of the line would go something like this: 'Perhaps "fear" for you is something which does not understand "fear"?'

(and before anyone can say it: no, the fact that kyoufu is in quotation marks there means absolutely nothing. Manga authors put words in quotation marks for random emphasis, you might as well try to read into the randomly bolded words in many comics)

Tsuujinu is not a verb one would use to describe the efficacy of a poison, it simply doesn't make sense. It does, however, make sense when talking about emotions like fear. Thus, Kubo is stupid and Dagda looks silly for extensively giving him the benefit of the doubt. QED.

that's flashy, but I don't see any realy reason to go fro your translation to "lol in the end it's stupid because I tell you so". You are just hidding it under half assed cherry picked explaination and the fact most people will not understand the source anyway so you can distort it all you want.

Yep, you've got it anon, Dude's part of the anti-Kubo ~conspiracy~

Are you sure it doesn't mean 'bowel movement'?

Its the government keeping the kubotite down, a dark conspiracy which includes taking his work after it leaves his hands and erasing the backgrounds & editing his plot writing so it is terrible and makes no sense all so One Piece can be the Hokage of shounen manga.

So I don't even read Bleach, but let me see if I got this right: she's saying the guy's biggest "fear" might be someone who doesn't feel "fear"? That makes sense if his big deal is causing fear or something like that.

Correct. What's stupid is WHY she can't feel fear.

but that reason matches the definition given during the chapter.

Are you prepared for the guy who should be dead to stroll in and totally steal his sister's hype?

Not even with complete bullshit powerups can she do shit on her own, clearly worst girl.

Will admit this, dude looked sufficiently horrifying.

This chapter was pretty nonsensical and pointless, but at least we get to know Rukia's bankai name now. Will we see it next week? I hope so, but I dount it somehow. Kubo would have shown it as a cliffhanger like he did with Renji. He's just building up the mystery a little more this week, and probably next week.

In bleach it's better to consider the "real world", HM and SS as dimensions than concept of "life" and "death". Ghosts are a state of soul in the "living world" only, before it's sent either in HM or SS. It's like, an unstable phase after a living body in the living world dies.
