I don't get it.

To be fair with both series, judging for the way Kurumada deals with the other series, it could be said that his only canon is the original Saint Seiya manga. Everything else is "meh" for him.

most people can't, it's just ggdev sockpuppets shitposting
there might be one or two amusing lines per gg sub but even when they're not joking around it usually sounds way better in the Nutbladder/Commie subs
I can see going for a "so bad it's good" kind of thing like DUWANG does but gg can't even muster that consistently or use even basic British slang properly so it just looks like shit the whole way through

For whatever reason most anime being produced these days just doesn't appeal to me. Maybe it's the usual stuff we constantly hear people complaining about: Bad plots, moe uguu~, merchandising, an incestuous fan/producer relationship, the shift to digital, etc, etc. Or maybe I've just grown older and changed too much as a person. Whatever the case may be, I'm just not enjoying most series the way I used to. So I've been going back and watching old anime from the 80's and 90's that I never watched before. I just finally got around to watching Macross Plus, and despite its stranger moments and a few flat scenes, I really enjoyed it.

Do any of you have a classic series you're very fond of and feel like recommending?

If, like me, you were raised on Tom Clancy before ever watching anime, Gasaraki is a superb choice.

I also second Outlaw Star and suggest Record of Lodoss War.

Lost Children was pretty much as dark as Gothic medieval fantasy gets without it going into the realm of parody.

I think what makes it so shocking is that it was still in the time when Mirua was basically all like "What you think purity and innocence survives? You think children are immune from the horrors of this world? FUCK YOU! They either become amoral fairy monsters for the rest of their lives or get squashed by a huge slab of iron."

I honestly don't think Berserk has quite gotten THAT dark in a while. It's certainly cut it close, but never really THAT far.
>> No. 78747
I just don't think being the darkest Berserk has ever gotten means it's the best arc. The story just wasn't that memorable. I remember a girl who lived with a shitty dad, the demon-butterfly kids, and that the main demon was mildly sympathetic. That's it. It just didn't stick around in my memory aside from a vague recollection that "oh yeah, that was pretty good." Berserk is always at least "pretty good."

Golden Age definitely gets the most exposure, but it's for a reason. Griffith's sacrifice was one of the most visceral gut-punches I've ever read, because I knew all the characters well, and the build-up was handled so perfectly. It's easily the best arc.

My experience with this ended up being much like my experience with the OTHER would-be Utena successor, Star Driver (in that case it was the writer and not the director though). First episode was "FUCKING WHAT!? OH MY GOD THIS COULD BE AMAZING," but it ultimately just wears on you.

This stayed fresh longer than Star Driver though.

>There were scenes with literally hundreds of costumed extras just standing there not knowing what to do while the camera panned in a boring circle around the main characters.

I don't remember a single instance of this ever occurring in his works (referring only to Utena and MP--no idea how his work was on Sailor Moon), much less MP where the extras were white-cutouts of people passing by...

I'm also confused by your Korra statement, but I assume you mean "by the time the second season airs"? I agree that I can't see MP being upheld as a classic in the future, however. But I suppose only time will tell on that front.

I have a silly idea that someone should run with it.

What if there was this team of magical girls who worked together and saved the world a long time ago and one of the girls stays in the magic girl game while the others move on with their lives. Then years later the magic girl comes back and tries to get the gang back together. The girls are in their 30's/40's and have their own families and careers and things and they have to come back and defeat the evil that's reviving themselves.

Also it's really important for the women to not turn back into girls when they transform. Is this a decent idea?

What if everyone else moves on and Venus is still banging around doing the magical girl shtick?

Isn't that more or less canon? I didn't read Sailor V, but I thought I heard it started before Sailor Moon, but ended afterward.
>> No. 78601
Oddly enough, "It" would be a good model for this story, possibly. The team have all moved on, and they must reunite to take down an old foe. They must finally learn to patch up old wounds before they are able to finally conquer their fears.

And the main character is a self-insert for the author.

Has anyone closely followed the lore of Negima?

Ken Akamatsu hasn't been clear about the Mars destruction plot. Let's figure out what exactly the deal is.

So, according Fate's team, in approximately 9 years, the geography of Mars will be devastated. What's the cause?

After Mars 'collapses', it leads to the tragic future that Chao tried to prevent, whereby survivors of Mars wage war against Earth for over a century.

In order to prevent this, Negi will terraform Mars. How does this prevent Mars from collapsing? From what Ken Akamatsu has shown us, it seems the collapse is caused by a meteor strike.

Negi also expects terraforming to take over 100 years. How is this fast enough for the 'collapse' of Mars, which will occur in 9 years from the present?

Also, about Chao's plan... How does revealing the existence of magic to everyone on Earth prevent the geography of Mars from being devastated?

I understand some of the plot points may be withheld by Ken Akamatsu intentionally, but let's make guesses!

Perhaps he is concluding Negima so he can work full-time on his free manga download site, J-Comi?

Apparently there is some reason behind why Negima ended: Akamatsu ended his exclusivity contract with Kodansha over a very serious issue. Kodansha along with several other publishers is backing a law that, if passed, will allow publishing companies and not the authors to control rights for a series along with the author. The issue is, the publisher is able to freely shut down any fan work or derivative work (doujinshi or fan art on websites like Pixiv) without contacting the author first.

There's an article on it here that details some more of it. It could potentially be a destructive thing for the manga industry in Japan.
