>Why are hands so hard? They're one of the most complex structures found in living animals. Only octopus tentacles really handily beat human hands in terms of the number of different shapes they're capable of assuming. You've got to figure you've got, what, like 30 bones per hand, most of which are operated independently by a bunch of tendons (but no muscles, oddly enough), and with a wide range of motion between each joint, the fingers are arranged on a "c" curve that gets even more dramatic by the time you get to the tips, and the thumb is at a completely different angle from the others. Throw on top of that how much most people underestimate the length of the palm, and it's a recipe for disaster.
Try to think in terms of how the bones are moving and you'll probably have a better time of it. Don't draw a circle with fingers coming out--draw carpals and metacarpals and "clothe" them in flesh to build the palm, with the phalanges becoming the fingers.
