I think at the end of the day I lost interest in this when I came to the conclusion that you could basically get the same result just by inventing a random generation algorithm and hook it up to a pokemon red rom.

Except then you have less a chance of trolls deciding it'd be teh epic lulz for you to just raid start9 again and again and again

You really wouldn't: random input wouldn't have any sort of clear direction. This has net advancement toward one or more general goals, but is randomized on the small scale by genuine disagreement, a relatively small number of troll inputs, and poor coordination.

Sort of like how most movement of electrons in a wire will be random, but the mean of their change in position creates a current.

It's thousand monkeys at a thousand typewriters, except it's a game boy instead.

That just makes it sound like a ton of people fighting over one controller. Which makes all the thought experiment walls o texts come off as even more pointless.

Not that that's a reason not to do this, just that some people take it way too seriously.

Saw a post on tumblr that likened it to the actual show due to the progression and the use of pokemon.

It's not so much about seeing whether random input will result in a cleared game. Especially since the input isn't completely random here. There are factions and the Democracy/Anarchy system and all that; people working towards specific goals. It's interesting because we get to observe this bizarre, highly specific community arise within a manner of days and develop their own little culture around getting a game avatar to move a few steps in more than a minute. It's fun to see what people will anchor themselves to.

Taking it seriously is kind of the joke.

Why isn't Gen I Red cool enough to be in most of the fanart? That shouldn't bother me but it seems like nostalgia is a big factor in this thing's popularity, and that pink-capped guy didn't come on the scene until 2004.

Because despite what you may want to believe, Gen 1 Red isn't considered to be the "typical" red and usually for good and not so good reasons.

The most integral one being that the Pokemon Special manga is what people like to defer to.

The second one being that Gen 1 Red's design with that artstyle is... kinda hard to capture and doesn't always look good.

No. It may seem totally random, but the majority of the users are pushing towards the goal. There is a loosely unified mindset attempting to actually beat the game. It's really fascinating to be honest.

Huh, that's interesting. Wonder how that stacks up with that research saying internet trolls being basic sociopaths and sadists

It's a fascinating concept, I'm just surprised it's caught on like it has. Imagine you were playing Pokemon, except every half-second or so a random button is pushed. Nobody would find that fun in the slightest. And yet here we have thousands of people doing literally that, all at the same time.

It's not just a group of people struggling to play Pokemon. It's a group of people working together towards a goal and overcoming great challenges, creating their own little community and being able to share fond memories once it's all over. Think of it like the Archie Sonic Marathon, only interactive. I don't think it could work for any other game, since EVERYBODY loves Pokemon. There are no trolls at work here except those doing things for the greater good, like Start9, simply because EVERYONE wants to be a part of this for reasons other than shits and giggles. Not only that, but there's no game overs, and no random encounters unless you go in grass. It wouldn't work for something like Final Fantasy for example.

I hope it continues on to Gold once this is over.

(Psst, we have a Pokémon board (>>/pkmn/), though it doesn't get nearly as much attention as /cog/.)

I think I'll actually watch some of this tonight. I've read a lot of articles about it but not actually viewed the actual stream.

Also, I'm surprised we haven't heard a word from Nintendo. They tend to be pretty hardcore about IPs and copyright and shit, even on games that are old enough to vote, but AFAIK they haven't said one word. Granted, the rights are actually owned by Gamefreak, but since they're a second-party dev I'd think Nintendo would do something.

Perhaps they've finally realized that the amount of ill-will they'd generate from shutting this down far surpasses any (completely made up) savings/brand damage?

Given how popular this is now, I doubt they'd risk a boycott by going against it.

They beat it.

Something new is supposed to start tomorrow; hopefully Gold/Silver. Right now they're playing a version of Link's Awakening that's been hacked to include Pokemon elements.

Has the Imgur summary been updated yet to tell the whole story?

I'm not aware of any particular imgur. I've just been following this tangentially and saw no one else posted that it was finished...

Honestly this sounds way cooler than Gold/Silver.

But trying to play a non-turned based game through twitch it nearly impossible.

Anyway, they changed to a similarly-hacked Super Mario Land, but now it's just "The End" screen.
