I know everyone always says the Vita is an amazing piece of hardware and it's just a shame about the games and all, but man, once you've had it in your hand you can't help but be impressed.
Got the Tearaway bundle. The game is so goddamn charming and adorable, I can't stop grinning while playing.
Also got myself a PS + subscription. Downloaded Gravity Rush and am now downloading Soul Sacrifice. Didn't plan on playing Uncharted, but it's free too, so I might as well.
P4G is on the way. Wanted a physical copy of that, so I had to import it. Overall, I'm happy I made the purchase. For now.

Soul Sacrifice is a lot more fast-paced than I thought it would be. I'm having a blast. It's also a pretty dangerous game. The mission structure tends to make you go "Just wanna see what the next one is like." over and over again.

>It is with a heavy heart that I announce today the passing of my friend Greg Martin. Greg was the exceptionally talented illustrator that created the packaging artwork for Flintstones 2, Jetsons, Bonk’s Adventure, several Adventure Island games, all of the early Sonic the Hedgehog games, and dozens more classic covers and many promotional (ads, etc) pieces as well. He was an incredible artist and an even better person.

Which games do you all play to help take your mind of the outside world when it becomes an icy unforgiving hellscape? My go to last year was Super Mario Sunshine but I sunk enough time into it to achieve literally every last thing in the game, so now it's too familiar. My Kirby games, surprisingly, have managed to succeed through where FarCry and Uncharted could not. Maybe it's a platformer thing.

http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2014/01/07/february-2014-evolve-768796.aspx

>Few independent studios sport the multiplayer pedigree of Turtle Rock Studios. After years of working on Valve's Counter-Strike series, the California-based developer created Left 4 Dead, a post-apocalyptic shooter that redefined cooperative gaming and landed the number-one spot on Game Informer's Top 30 Co-op Games of All Time list. Now the studio is combining its competitive and cooperative design expertise for a new, next-gen only IP: Evolve. Backed by publisher 2K Games, which paid a whopping $10.8 million for the IP in last year's THQ auction, Turtle Rock is taking full advantage of gamers' powerful new systems.

>The sci-fi multiplayer-focused shooter pits a four-player crew of alien hunters against a separate player-controlled monster that grows larger and more powerful over the course of matches. Each hunter features its own unique items and abilities, and while the monster may be outnumbered, its size and an assortment of devastating attacks make it a more than formidable foe. Like Turtle Rock's previous titles, Evolve is being built with variety and replayabilty in mind; the result is a novel mix of cooperative and competitive multiplayer elements that's unlike anything we've played before. Our exclusive hands-on time with the game's four-versus-one hunt mode left us with plenty to be excited about, and you can get all the details in this month's issue.

>>184740
MH has a nice variety of outfits for females. In Unite, I used Ceanataur S (a full suit of armor) for so long I retired it with distinction rather than sell it. A big part of this is MH armor bestows perks which augment character attributes; CeanS is one of the best for its rank and ease of making. So, endgame sets can look rather ridiculous since mixing sets often grants hyper-competitive perks you can't get on most full sets.

But yeah, since the female midriff is typically exposed and supposedly stronger than anything, it's a wonder they don't frog splash all the baddies.

In other news, I think I've wrung the Bravely Default demo dry. Now I'm stuck with the Waiting Game.

All of the boss designs in Soul Sacrifice are goddamn great (and they should be, since they're like 90% of the game), but there's just something particularly cool about Cyclops. The first time you see him, you think he's just this huge disfigured giant, dragging a weird club around. But then while you fight him, you notice he's the one getting dragged around, sometimes even dangling as he desperately clings to his obviously sentient weapon, that has a will of its own. And then you read his backstory and it all makes sense. It's just such a fucking cool idea for a boss, that's playing with expectations.

I can't speak for GeForce stuff directly as I use ATI but usually when there is some error with the driver suite then yea its best to uninstall it and then go with a fresh install with the newest drivers.

though it looks like the error might be in how it resolves its host connection according to what I'm seeing when searching the actual error.

https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/571539/geforce-experience-encountered-an-error-and-must-close-v1-6/

so it might be just changing its port address will fix it.

So I beat Lords of Shadow.

It's alright. I liked the lore actually being based on actual old trolls/faries/goblins folklore. A massive part of the story being hidden in cheap looking animatics in a DLC was a dumb move though. Gameplay's pretty good for a 'GoW clone', but the platforming segments (especially the clock tower) can go fuck themselves.
I loved the scenery and detail. Especially for the castle and music box (And that crystal cave? Are you kidding me? You only give us 3 minutes with that place?). But for most of it, I didn't really feel like I was playing a Castlevania; and I've played em all save for the LoS series and the obscure pachinco game. Story was alright till the DLC segment. How he stole his powers from the worlds dumbest eldrich horror. Who might I add seemed really pathetic outside battle with his constant moaning, out of breath panting, and extremely slow movements. Seriously, you just jump in and take his power as it very very slowly floats back to him as he just stands there waiting.

Overall pretty fun, but I don't think I'll bother with the 3DS one or the sequel.

It's best to skip Mirror of Fate. It's the open exploration style of the post-Symphonia games but with sluggish controls and horrible, God of War style whip combat that doesn't work at all. I was looking forward to it but it just isn't fun and fails miserably at combining platforming and combat like either the Classicvania games or the Metroidvanias, and usually just doesn't even bother trying to combine them together so the level design becomes bland and tedious

I actually had the revelation that you could just aim with the left stick and then proceed to cut where indicated with pressing X. The aiming in blade mode like that is still hot garbage, but it's not quite as finicky and imprecise as using the right stick, so in the end I actually managed to get rid of his shields. The fight after that is fun as fuck, though. I wish it would've been that from the get-go. The shield gimmick seems like a vestige from the concept work from when Kojima Productions was still working on it.

I mean he has all the cliche markers of being an American character in a Japanese series, the blonde hair & the blue eyes and the cowboy clothing and the american flag designs on her clothing... but she also has Japanese flags on her clothing including some overlapping her stars & stripes.

I suppose she could be one of those "Half jap but with some exotic foreign blood in there, but only half so as not to be TOO foreign"

Japan is probably great if you're a straight Japanese male. Kind of like how America was amazing if you were a straight Caucasian male back in the 1940s-50s. There's still some degree of that here, but it's a far smaller "thing" and continues to dwindle. Japan's issue with children and xenophobia will either correct themselves or, well, the problems will just stop existing.

Just like the rate of interracial marriage increases here in America, Japan will have to accept other nationalities (even if just other Asian countries like China, but I think they're more likely to accept American blood than Chinese/Korean blood). Thanks to the world economy, in 1000 years time almost everyone on earth will be delicious brown people with porcelain faces...

I think Japan's general world view is also why Nintendo is doing so poorly right now, and even the Japanese aren't going insane over their stuff like they used to.

Yup. There are still improvements to be made graphically (namely with multi-body physics, collision/meshing, and water), but we've been crawling out of the Uncanny Valley for some time now and have had diminishing returns over the past few years.

Hopefully the hype over graphics (the easiest thing to improve in games thus far) will die down and the focus will turn to lasting AI (where an "actor" has a motivation that can last and cause event through the entire game so long as it exists), randomized encounters/environments, realtime body movement (fewer and fewer pre-planned animations, instead the game is given a goal and works to move the limbs/body to achieve that goal; this goes back to collisions), and speech synthesis, both in the voice and the contents of the speech.

I think this is just Rockstar's style. What I mean by this is that they have a habit of putting a fuckton of detail into their games that most players will probably never experience. I find it kind of impressive in a way. San Andreas and IV have a ton of dialogue that I've never even heard and GTAV has a bunch of street gangs (like the Korean Mob, for example) that hang around their turf and will shoot you for causing trouble, in spite of the fact that you will not encounter most of these gangs during the missions.

It's a series of neat little details that I appreciate. The downside to some of this is that it leaves you wanting more (in the case of underwater exploration, for example).

I think (next gen) ACIV is the first really big game that "does" water, both above and below. I've seen some demos recently about dynamic fluid motion and collision that were very cool (but wouldn't be to someone without knowledge of what a bitch liquids are to code) and if those have already been worked into various engines then we could be seeing a lot more like that.

The thing is that, outside of games like ACIV where much of the action takes place on or near water, having such sophisticated rendering can be kind of a waste of time/space. Take WATCH_DOGS, for example: while there were some bay areas IIRC, what we've seen has taken place entirely on the land. Liquid physics might be useful for fountains and such, but it likely won't have the complexity of ACIV despite releasing after it.

Got around to beating Mass Effect 3.

I feel like I threw away my money. I was fine up until the ending. Like, I knew it was bad, and I thought I was prepared for it, but then game fucking talked at me in complete bullshit for half an hour. Not even with the context from the Leviathan DLC or the Extended shit, or whatever, made this anyway half tolerable. Seriously, the reasoning behind the reapers and everything? Complete and utter bullshit that seems like there was very little critical thought put into it. What made it worse is I hated all the choices, and I just wanted to vent my frustrations a little bit, but when I shot at the Catalyst, the game got pissy at me and was like "YOu know what, no. Fuck you. Your Commander Shepard FUCKED up so now you failed, you didn't break the cycle, do not pass go, do not collect $200."

Being remembered in the future as "The Shepard", the legend who taught the future how to make the right choice you didn't? Not really a consolation, to be honest. I thought I was ready for this. I wasn't.

It's a shame to, because I was loving that last level, and everything up to when the Catalyst sticks it's stupid goddamn face in. Like the game was okay, except for Kai Leng and this shit. Kai Leng was like they farted in the same room as me. Awful, but at least it dissipated. That ending was like they shit in my lap and then got mad when I didn't like it. The ending I got was the extended ending option, and I could tell because it suddenly felt SUPER passive aggressive all of the sudden.

There. Just needed to get that off my chest, and then never play this fucking series again.

Interested in Monster Hunter, but don't have a WiiU?

Select the demo on your 3DS but don't click on it. Down at the bottom, press "Manual."
There are some very basic instructions on how to use the various weapons there.

I would like to separate weapons into groups for you.

Melee and ranged are a given, but let me further divide the melee weaponry.
"Standard" and "Extra-mechanical"

Here are the "Standard" melee weapons, which are very simple and don't require you to monitor or maintain too many parts of them.

1) Sword and Shield: Can be described as "zippy." Attacks fast, moves fast, but is not terribly strong. Can block.
2) Greatsword: Can be described as "brutal." Attacks are slow, and it moves even slower with the weapon drawn, but dishes out a shitload of damage if you can time the charged attacks right. Blocking consumes sharpness.
3) Hammer. Slow to attack, but fairly mobile while drawn otherwise. Can hold R to charge for various different attacks, but consumes stamina. Cannot block. It is suggested that you stop before releasing the R button for the super pound as the spinning attack eats a lot of sharpness but is fairly weak.
4) Lance. Slow as shit, blocks extremely well, can't roll but can hop. Precise, very simple. Poke poke poke hop poke poke poke hop.

Just played the Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 demo on PS3. Before I say anything, I will say that I did not finish the original Lords of Shadow. I only played but a few hours of that game before deciding I simply did not enjoy the gameplay nor did the story grab me any to stick around.

First off, I'm pretty bummed out that Gabriel Belmont's main-weapon is still essentially the Combat Cross. All this demonic power and he simply uses it to mimic his old whip. With the new Void Sword and Chaos Fists replacing light magic and shadow magic, respectively, those feel a lot more enjoyable to wield.

Another thing I found curious was the option to turn off QTEs. Unfortunately, I don't recall if this was an option in the first game so this may not even be a big deal. Still I decided to play the short demo twice; one with QTEs on and one with them off. Since the QTEs does not ask you to push a specific button, they're in no way difficult but they aren't exactly enjoyable either. When they were off, the same cutscenes would simply play out in full as though you were successful but without the slowdown effect it gives you to nail the QTE. This felt a lot nicer as the action went much more smoothly, but it does have you sitting there doing essentially nothing until it gives you control again. This will definitely vary among people who will wish to toggle the option or not, so it's at least nice that we're given it.

Lastly, lines like "what is a man but a miserable pile of secrets" and "die monster; you don't belong in this world" being said in the game just felt... weird. It didn't make me nostalgic, it didn't make me chuckle, it was just... weird. I think I can say it also didn't disgust me. Like many others, I actually enjoy that infamous exchange in the original Symphony of the Night, terrible acting and all. But to hear it in this new take of Castlevania... I don't know. I really wish I could describe it better, but then maybe I don't even know how I feel myself.

Overall, it wasn't bad. Nothing spectacular, but not too bad. If you have any partial interest, try it out. The combat feels a bit better, but I don't know how I feel about doing that for something hours.

Kinda not vidya, even if she is the face of Two Souls, which I feel like is less compelling than the the Walking Dead and even less compelling than The Wolf Among Us

Reading my backlog of Game Informer (cause I'm certainly not playing my backlog of games) I came upon an interview with Inafune over MN9. I thought I'd share this bit, about the indie scene in general (Nov 13, Page 35):

Game Informer:
>The North American and European independent game scenes have been flourishing in the past few years. There have always been independent Japanese developers, but there are fewer new and ambitious projects coming out of Japan. Do you sense that it's changing with the programs like Bit Summit, which encourages that growth?

Keiji Inafune:
>No, it really hasn't changed. Just because you do a PR event like Bit Summit doesn't mean that there are all these opportunities that exist in Japan that didn't before. In the end independent developers are largely viewed as the labor houses for the core concept that the publisher develops. They are really looked down upon, like, I'm going to tell you what to do, and you're going to do it." If an independent developer develops a pitch and shops it around to publishers, most of the time they look at it and say, "No, you're going to do this IP and I'm going to tell you how to do it and you're just going to go make the art and models and be done with it." A lot of times, that's how it works out.

>As long as that core mindset exists, in Japan, the number of opportunities that exist for independent developers there will forever be limited. Additionally, Japan has never been a strong PC market, so being able to have two or three people making a game for PC isn't attractive for the consumer base there. No one is going to buy it. That leaves you one option with is maybe to do a social game with a two- or three-person game for iPhone or Android. But there is a ton of competition there, and you're not going to have the marketing dollars or support to get that up and running either. That's why the best solution is to come up with new, innovative ways that an independent developer can raise money. One of those solutions is going to be Kickstarter.

I'm nearing the end of BD, and it's pretty obvious that this game ran out of budget somewhere along the way. I'm not going to say why because of spoilers, but when you get there, you'll know exactly why.

Still, it's been a fun ride (flawed!...but fun) and I'm looking forward to the sequel when it comes over to NA. Which I'm sure it will, because BD sold pretty well according to Nintendo. 200K in less than a month, counting both digital and retail sales.

After I finish up this, I'm going to wait for the Conception II demo (which drops on the 3DS and Vita next week). The game has been described to me as "Persona with a class system" so I'm interested in seeing that. I plan to get the game when it comes out next month because I am really in the mood for JRPGs right now.

Oh, and the 3DS umihara kawase game comes out in like 3 days. That snuck up on me and I'm not sure if I should buy it or not.

Of course I do. I was following the series back when we were supposed to get the original PSP game over here.

And there's nothing to get offended about because the series tends to be tongue-in-cheek and they aren't even real babies. You can even hook up with other male players (through streetpass and online) and make babies with them, too. It's called "class-manting" or something.

While nice, I feel like they could've put more stuff in the game without it. Like make the different, err, areas more different. I realize you can extrapolate reasons for them being similar due to plot, but I've read of people dropping the game upon reaching that part.

That being said, the issue with BD seeming to run out of budget doesn't have much to do with the VA and a lot more to do with how the game is structured. I don't want to get into spoilers here, just for the sake of those who haven't played.

I'll look into getting an actual mic next time around instead of using my tablet as said it wasn't bad but likely there are better. Just damned hard for me to get pitched right due to the vast difference from the way I sound in my head and the way sound to others. Did find that I can pitch it up and do a damn fine female voice though.

>"I still feel a bit sad with you guys for the article you wrote about Rare being dead," Craig Duncan, the boss of the Microsoft-owned Kinect Sports developer, says at the beginning of our interview, not in an abrasive, confrontational way, but in a genuine, heartfelt way. I listen and believe it did make him sad. No doubt it saddened a few here.

Craig, I get it. If I was head of a company that everyone said was dead, I'd probably be frustrated with it, too. But on the other hand, maybe if your company's game output since being bought out by Microsoft didn't look like this, maybe people wouldn't say you were dead.

You swear up and down that you have a ton of creative talent. So prove it for fuck's sake. Show us the games. Believe me, I would love nothing so much as a Rareware Renaissance. But I can't believe in that until you show it to me.

I didn't ever really look for Xbox games for a while, and don't think I had a Game Boy Advance for some time either, and what they did with the Kinect is half the reason I never got one, so I never got the chance to play any of those. Would try out the latest sports one if they actually got back to making characters and I wasn't also never getting an Xbox One because of all the poorly handled things around that.

Speaking of things related to Rare, Tengami is out on iOS, but I think I'd rather wait for the WiiU version.

Viva Pinata gets a surprising amount of hate considering it may be the best thing Rare has made following their purchase by Microsoft. I'm not sure about the GBA games and Kameo since I never played them but Perfect Dark Zero wasn't nearly as impressive as it should have been. Then there's Viva Pinata and it's actually pretty engaging for a psuedo Pokemon clone that later became a half-assed attempt at franchising.

It was always a half-assed attempt at franchising. The first game coincided with a long-forgotten cartoon.
>> No. 186310
>>186307
Regardless of franchising attempt, it was still a fun farm/animal/garden sim game thing. The only Viva Pinata title that was even remotely closer to the cartoon was the party game that came later which was admittedly pretty whatever, but the main games were simply just fun to play.

Judging by the screenshots and the images in them, my best guess as to what's going on is that Facebook is buying Oculus Rift so as to start a program to genetically engineer giant biomechanical titans, paint them up to look like robots, then clone a little girl from their dead wife's DNA and use her to initiate the apocalypse so they can be with their dead wife again.

It's possible I'm misreading them though.

>Update: We're on the call now, and Mark Zuckerberg is already pointing out Facebook's acquisition of Instagram as an example of how the company is getting experience buying properties and allowing them to continue to operate independently. Zuckerberg called out virtual reality as one of the computing platforms of the future -- following desktops and mobile -- and yes, talked about building Facebook's advertising into it. Specifically, he talked about the potential of a virtual communication network, buying virtual goods, and down the line, advertising.

>talked about building Facebook's advertising into it.

Why do these people act like they know that FB is going to fuck up the Oculus Rift at this point in time? What did FB announce about their plans for it that's so terrifying? For all we know they might just be trying to branch out. Just because Amazon owns Double Helix doesn't mean you're going to be able to purchase books by playing Killer Instinct. And Buying Fritos and Quaker Oats didn't mean Pepsico stopped making Pepsi.

Majority of people's hate towards this buy tends to stem from a predetermined hate towards Facebook in general, whether they hate the games Facebook already has like Farmville, social media sites, or just anything that a lot of people use. Really, tie anything people like to something that they don't and they'll almost always associate the negative atop the positive, if any positive at all.

So a good or bad thing that a company that got a good amount of its footing from Kickstarter was able to make enough of an impact to be brought into the big league?
>> No. 186358
>>186357
In this case both. A giant company buying out a small one is almost never a good thing as quality, creativity and most importantly employees always get left behind in the rubble. But at the same time, the massive funding and publicity a company like Facebook can provide is incredibly important for new technology like the Rift to grab hold in the mainstream market and it might graduate from an expensive gimmick that's mostly for flight simulator nutters, like so many periphals before it, to something that most devs will have to keep in mind when developing a framework for games in the future.

Let's not give them any credit, many are just mad because they want some of that money. 4chan in particular is mad that there will be a longer wait before they can fuck underage cartoon girls in three dimensions.

Still, upon reflection it's not quite as disgraceful as the whole Dina thing.

Not even that. Remember that Sony is developing their own VR headset and most underage cartoon girl games will be for PS4 anyway.

Realistically, the Rift is aimed at enthusiasts. It's aimed at a demographic of this consumer base that is ok with paying high premiums for such peripherals. To be brutally honest, it's going to be a product of interest to SimSpergs like I who would love an added layer of atmosphere, but don't have the time, money, and effort to dedicate on buying a cockpit, making one from scratch, or even tearing out the insides of a derelict fighter/race car to fashion one from that. It'll be of interest to anyone that feels like that, really. "I want my FPS to possess greater immersion and I have $300 to burn."

It's an enthusiast product for an enthusiast crowd that's not full on sperg yet. There will not be any Facebook integration other than probably the token "Upload to facebook" business if at all.

And of course, if you happen to be interested in more than one simulator, you aren't going to have an entire hall of cockpits at your disposal. Not to mention CAD remote operation.

>>186356
I don't trust Facebook and don't like when other sites use it for their comment system. I also don't think Facebook needed to by Occulus to make money off it, or that Occulus needs Facebook's support to succeed. At the very least it seems too early to decide that. Given the greater capabilities and low cost relative to previous attempts, I think it'd be fair to release the first consumer version before saying it can't be sold to consumers without selling the business.

>>186359
No idea how much of /v/ to take seriously when it comes to that. I mean really, who puts graphics first when it comes to AI girlfriends? Wouldn't you go for an emotion simulation system first?
