Figure since Yule Tide is upon us and Black Friday(MURICA)/Cyber Monday is approaching fast it would be good to have a thread dedicated to video game sales/deals and gift giving, for those with funds and heart to spare. May as well also use this for setting up Steam trades. If you find a good deal, even if limited time (days, not minutes), feel free to post it.

To kick it off: I was pointed to this neat-looking (I haven't tried it, but Lifehacker likes it) website that checks various game outlets to find you the best deal on a game you're looking for. You can set up lists, exclude websites, and even import your Steam wishlist. Plus, it shows other regions, for those not in the States. http://isthereanydeal.com

Also, everyone's favorite charity vidya has a "permanent" store. The deals aren't as great as "pay what you want", and the percentages are locked (so no 100% to charity), but you don't have to get a big bundle with some un-wanted games you're stuck with and the selection seems a bit wider. https://www.humblebundle.com/store

FYI, the current Humble Bundle (~4 days remain) is from WB Games and is a fairly decent group of games, including Arkham City and Asylum. (Though they're Windows/Steam only.)

Black Friday deals are generally no better than regular deals through the year. Keep that in mind.

Old sales thread: >>177718

Autumn Sale going on! Perhaps because it's a more minor sale, there's no event going on in parallel with it (like the Steam Summer Sale Trading Cards or last Winter Sale had the Badge)

At this point I think I'm full up on games. My backlog is still huge (and only continues to grow, not shrink) and there are no games that I'm super interested in that I don't already own. However, I do have $6.11 from selling items on the Market, so perhaps something will pique my interest.

If not, it'll get spent on some MvM tickets.

>>183243
>Only ever buy stuff as a daily deal or as a flash sale.
Agreed. In addition, they're still doing the thing where daily deals last 48 hours, so you don't have to get them right away. Finally, remember that the last day they do a "best of", so if you miss a daily sale there's a chance it will come back.

Hm, Bioshock Infinite and Dishonored: GOTY are on sale for about the same price.

Decisions, decisions.

To be honest I'm most interested in Shadow Warrior (50% off at $19.99), but it'll be a while before the price on that drops to that level.

Meanwhile I'm intrigued by Bioshock and Dishonored just to see what they're like.

Strike Suit Zero and Infinity are on sale for $6.79 and $2.37, respectively.

Basically space combat sims like Wing Commander with a little bit of Macross thrown in. The former has a single player campaign, while the latter is a high score chaser.

I got the first one on a GOG sale months ago, finally got to play it yesterday. Definitely worth the money.

Why?
Bioshock Infinite has crazy mediocre gameplay. Watching or reading the story gives you all you really need (though honestly I don't like the story. There are quite a few tenuous plot-holes about characterization and parts of it where taken out of their original context making certain parts seem a little disjointed for my liking). Dishonored is actually fun to play.

Still, 10 bucks isn't a terrible price for it. It's got an interesting setting and pretty visuals.

Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon and Metro 2033 are on daily deal sale. Used to be 50% off for both, now Blood Dragon is a 66% ($5.09) and Metro's at 75% ($3.74).

Animated shorts are more expensive to do than a videogame, I guess?
I mean, I'm pretty sure they thought of that, so there must be some market reason.
>> No. 183546
>>183545
I think that they chose the medium on purpose. Shorts would probably have to be structured over mostly a single conversation at a time, while a video game allows for dozens of scenes that come out randomly, you know like these characters are actually shooting the shit. Of course, as the comments above show it doesn't always work out that way in practice, but still.
>> No. 183561

Or, it could be that they're a game company that already had previous experience making poker games and not an animation studio.

Had another trading-card-related epiphany (that worked this time): in the initial 24 hours or so, the sell price for Sale-related cards was extremely high, topping about 12 hours in then sinking fast until they're about 15 cents, then gradually dropped to 10 by the end of the sale. The same happened this time, as cards are going for 60-80 cents in this initial land-grab; by the end of the sale, they'll be down to the 8-10 cents.

So, I found the cheapest cards I was missing (where overall cost for crafting a badge was less than selling a globe-related card) to craft badges, then sold the globe card. Rinse, repeat. Now, I'm about where I was in wallet funds, but 4 badges richer and three levels higher (passing Lv20, which means increased pack drop rate).

Come Jan 1, I will be getting a gift card for Gamestop, where I will buy a Steam Wallet card. I will then splurge on the now-cheap Globe Cards, craft them, and hope for a rare item drop, which I will proceed to turn around and sell. (Well, assuming they become sellable.)

...though I completely forgot that the timeframe for downloading Squigly as free DLC ran out over a month ago. Really kicking myself for dragging my feet on buying the game on my own (especially since it was in multiple sales prior), because I don't think I'm going to feel inclined to fork over $5 to get a single extra character. Bought the color palette pack for Skullgirls since it was half-off in a flash sale.

Also, while it wasn't strictly through Steam, Humble Store had Volgarr for half-off, which comes with a Steam Key in addition to the DRM-free download.

Sort of half-regretting the purchase, since I found out the game employs a style of jumping mechanic I've loathed vehemently in 2D games ever since I was a kid. You can't change direction while jumping. You choose your direction at the time you jump, and that's what you're stuck with until you land. You can sort of compensate in certain situations by double-jumping in a different direction, but it's no substitute for just being able to control your fucking movements at all times. This has always felt like a clunky, faulty design choice, and the fact that I can't remember the last time I encountered it in a 2D game outside of the NES led me to think that the world had agreed this was just the wrong way to design jumping mechanics.

That particular bugbear aside, it's a solid, though brutal game.
>> No. 184422
>>184418

I know that's how it works in real-life, but from the perspective of a 2D action game, it seriously cramps otherwise responsive controls.
