Official PS4 unboxing video released.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YQUpg795iBo

As you may have guessed, it's a homage to Daft Punk's Random Access Memories Unboxed video.

Don't care about the new consoles at the moment.

However, I VERY MUCH DO CARE about the Giant Bomb launch. That was really fun to watch with the Wii U and I can't wait for it here. I'm clearing my day out to watch Jeff and company play video games that I do not have. It's going to be amazing.

It won't be as entertaining. Jeff is a depleted husk of his former self at the moment and there won't be a Ryan who's willing to just completely shit-talk stuff into the ground and fill the dead air. Still gonna watch it, mind you. It'll still be watchable, but just not as amazing.

>Sony’s next generation console may be right around the corner in North America, but there are still a few weeks before it settles its blue and black chassis on UK stores shelves. That’s not stopping the console’s initial roster of software from performing fairly well, though, as the PlayStation 4 accounted for three per cent of the chart-topping Call of Duty: Ghosts’ launch sales. That may not sound like much on paper – but it was enough to push it above the PlayStation 3 versions of Battlefield 4 and Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag in individual SKUs. It also outsold the Wii U and PC versions of the Activision first-person shooter.

>While it's impossible to accurately gauge how far the claims of broken systems extend, prior to launch Sony shared that their expected failure rate for the console was 0.4%. To put that in perspective, that's about 1 in 250. With over one million PlayStation 4 systems sold, that comes to about 4,000 potentially broken systems. While that's a small number compared to the 996,000 that do work, that's little consolation if you're one of the 4,000 affected waiting to mail a $400 paperweight back to Sony.

. . .

>For the potentially thousands of gamers who have had to spend the weekend after launch troubleshooting a system and waiting to talk to customer service, there's a lot of justifiable unhappiness. But on the bright side, it doesn't seem quite as serious as some reports seem to suggest.

Actually, it's about right. Wii U sales (in the US) were 400K first week. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wii_U#Sales) Wii sales were 600K in the first eight days (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wii_launch) Both are from Nintendo's own numbers.

I think there was a lot more excitement leading up to the PS4 than Wii (and definitely Wii U) from gamers. Wii was still being made fun of by everyone, and it would take a few weeks for family/friends to have a chance to experience the Wii and waggle, which is what would cause it to surge like a mother fucker. The PS4, however, has a ton of gamer steam from the very top.

Nintendo also had issues with supply on the Wii in the beginning, meaning that the $250 console would go for $600-800 on eBay for weeks as every place sold them as soon as it got them (and sometimes sooner, if a shipment was expected). Couldn't even keep 1 or 2 in stock. It seems Sony has no such problem.

Seems believable enough to me.
No one's interested in the WiiU and the spurn caused by the Xbone's initial announcement is still pretty prevalent.

Shame they have an expected failure rate though.

It'd be foolish not to, though. Unless you're going to put in the massive time and money needed for NASA-caliber engineering certification, the thing you build and then mass produce will fail in some instances (and might still, even with said certification.) It's better to estimate what can go wrong, how likely it will go wrong, and then plan on how to handle customer service and returns.

It's smart business.

Eh, I'm skeptical too of the launch numbers. We saw with the latest Pokemon that there was greater opening sales than previous generations, but then a harder falling-off during the next weekend. If that pattern holds true here, then there can be an argument that sales have merely "condensed." Of course, obscuring the issue for the PS4 is that the Xbone is launching this weekend too, so if there are weaker PS4 sales that can be argued as the reason too.

Mind you, that's just the cost of the parts. Manufactoring, shipping and retailer cut still have to be factored in, so they are still selling it at a loss. However, with PS+ counted as foregone inclusion, it seems like the statements that were made about already turning a profit with the second game sale might actually be true. That's not bad at all.

More clarity on the 1 million PS4 units sold:

>The system has only launched in the United States and Canada, so the million was sold just in North America. That’s the first thing to remember.

>The second thing to keep in mind is that, despite the belief that console sales may constrict during this generation, this was the largest console launch in history. The Wii was one of the most wildly popular systems in the current generation, it launched over Black Friday, and demand for the console was immense. It sold 600,000 units in its first eight days of availability.

>The Wii U sold 400,000 units in its first week of sales. If you combine the overall sales of the Wii and Wii U across their first week, you match the first day of the PlayStation 4. Let that sink in a bit.

>Still not impressed? The Xbox 360 sold 326,000 units in its first eight days of availability. The PlayStation 2? 500,000 units on the first day. The PlayStation 4 isn’t beating these records as much as it’s crushing them like a ripe grape.

>This isn't just a triumph of consumer support, but of logistics. Many of the console listed above would have sold more if more units had been sent to retail; simply having one million pieces of hardware available for launch to capitalize on the strong demand is in itself a feat. You can't sell 'em if you don't have 'em, and they won't buy 'em if they don't want 'em. Sony nailed almost every aspect of this launch.

>This is great news for the PlayStation 4, but it puts some serious pressure on Microsoft to launch at similar numbers or risk conceding an early win in the holiday sales race to the PlayStation 4. Selling one million pieces of hardware on the first day isn’t a good number, it’s above and beyond what anyone has been able to do historically on the first day of a system launch.

>Your move, Microsoft.

>GameStop Corp. (GME), the largest specialty retailer of video games, said its initial allocation of Sony Corp. (6758) PlayStation 4 consoles sold out and that 2.3 million customers are waiting for the devices.

>Initial sales of the player exceeded its predecessor, the PlayStation 3, by more than 80 percent in the first few days, executives of the Grapevine, Texas-based chain said today on a conference call with analysts. They also anticipate a large waiting list for Microsoft Corp. (MSFT)’s Xbox One, suggesting a prolonged industry sales slump is ending.

>Sony said on Nov. 17 it sold more than 1 million PlayStation 4 consoles in the U.S. and Canada within 24 hours of the $399 machine going on sale. The figure included some of the 1 million units Tokyo-based Sony presold on a global basis, said Dan Race, a PlayStation spokesman.

Best Buy has the best Vita deal with all models being $169.99. The Walking Dead bundle is the best deal, but I already have the game for the 360. Shame this bundle isn't available in America.

I might be talking out of my ass here but I remember hearing that they already dropped the price at the very last minute, so price drops are out of the question for a pretty long time anyway as the console is already "discounted".

You can't help the Vita's sales. The niche is too limited.

Hell, it probably had WAY more 1st party games in its first year than the PS4, but that doesn't matter if it's all stuff most people don't care about.

>Amy Hennig, the creative director and writer on the Uncharted series, has left developer Naughty Dog.

>Numerous trusted sources close to Naughty Dog have verified Hennig’s departure from the studio. She was writing and leading development of Uncharted PS4. Her final day at the studio was Monday, March 3.

>Sources claim Hennig was “forced out” by The Last of Us’ Neil Druckmann and Bruce Straley, and explained that Uncharted may now come under their control.

>Update: Sony has verified Amy Hennig's departure. A representative told IGN, "We can confirm that Amy Hennig has left Naughty Dog. Amy has made significant contributions to the game industry and we appreciate all she has done for Naughty Dog. The development timeline of Uncharted will not be impacted."

Finally bought a PS4 through Amazon. I think supplies are starting to become more available, as Amazon still has them up for sale after three (?) days. However, when I went to GameStop yesterday, the employee there said they were still struggling to meet demand.

Anyway, I finally went through with my purchase now that MGS: GZ and Infamous are coming out this month. I also need it for work, as I'll be receiving preview and review copies soon Bought Killzone, COD, and a PS+ membership. Pre-ordered Infamous; decided to just buy MGS off the shelves.

Playing SFXTK on the Vita; not bad so far.

I played about a day's worth of Infamous: Second Son yesterday. For this being my first Infamous game, I'm really enjoying it. It takes me back to all the fun I had playing Spider-Man 2. Even thought the X-Men vibes are strongly present, the game reminds me more of Avatar/Legend of Korra, since I'm battling Earthbenders most of the time. Been playing mostly good, although I've accidentally killed/subdued a few civilians. Been tempted to mess with protesters, though.

One thing I'm not liking is having to clear an area of DUP's control, just so I can try out the side missions. Ruins the groove. Also, while holding the PS4 controller like a spray can is neat (especially the sound coming from it), it's so awkward to do the stencil graffiti.

Been playing Mercenary Kings. Everything about its looks scream Metal Slug, but the game is more like Mega Man. It's fun, but the missions has you replaying the same level with different objectives. The layout and enemies changes depending on the missions, though, so it's not too repetitive to playthrough. And there are other levels, of course.

Fuck these snails and every enemy that has this attack pattern.

It really is straight-up a Metal Slug/Monster Hunter hybrid. Not a bad thing, mind you, but it's good to know what you're getting into with this. The gameplay also becomes a bit more flexible later in the ranks with better mods and gun types, but I'm finding I'm not really enjoying the drag to those better mods and gun types.

Knack was an okay game. The combat mechanics are limited and enemies sometimes killing you instantly with one or two hits is clearly bullshit, but the cartoony art style and decent platforming bits were enough to keep me going. Boss battles started out rough at the beginning, but got better as the game went along. Final boss was as challenging as a final boss should be; even with the game's BS kills.

Dat ending credits, though.
