The first one is pretty good and advanced for it's time. it's also on the VC or you could emulate it. I haven't gotten around to playing it but I need to now.

Just so we put this to bed, Wayfoward is darkening her, she's being brought up for pixels, there is gonna be some color weirdness but they didn't forget she's dark skinned.

Looking through the Kickstarter, they don't seem to have much of a plan and they aren't showing a hugely exciting game. The only draw is that it's Shantae, but they're already making another game for her on the 3DS. I like Wayforward, but they seem really bad at thinking things through.

It's not like Shantae is a really complicated type of game. It's a fun action/puzzle platformer staring a Half Genie who turns into animals. I don't know exactly what more you'd be asking for?

Well we can't see any of the stages and there don't seem to be any new characters or transformations or abilities shown off. Playing as Risky is a decent first stretch goal, but it seems more like a "play as Luigi" bit than a real new campaign (which is to say, more like Luigi in Galaxy than Super Luigi U). The other non-level stretch goals seem like they're just more of the same. There's no real hook to it: like I said, it's just "more Shantae" and they're ALREADY making a new game for the 3DS beside this one. Shantae's a cute series, but it doesn't seem to evolve much and this new iteration doesn't seem like it'd have any hook to justify itself. I'd like to see a reason why we should want this above other games, why we should keep asking for Shantae again.

Because just being a cheeky fun game isn't enough to justify funding a fourth title while a third one (that's way more interesting) is already in the works, especially when cheeky fun games aren't really in that short of supply. It's not that it doesn't look... alright, but there's really nothing there. Actually I can't even say it looks alright there's so little material, because then I would be judging stuff I haven't seen which is my point there's nothing THERE
I get that funding a Shantae game through kickstarter would be neat, but a proposal without any real information, no gimmick or hook besides the franchise name, and thrown out before the 3DS title is even out? ... on the other hand, goddamn it sucks that they are getting so much money they practically are making up stretch goals at this point, while Wayforward is getting cash at a a snail's pace. The game probably will be funded, but I am not holding any hopes on getting any of the extra stuff.

Penguine. I'm sorry but your argument is kinda falling flat in my ears. Lets think about what Wayforward has been making for the past couple years.

Adventure Time, MSF, Ducktales. All of those are pretty good games. But here's the thing: they're also incredibly short. They're excellent but flash in the pan watch them go out like a light super quick. And there's little to no doubt in my mind the 3DS Shantae will probably be the same. Why? Cause it kinda looks like it's using a lot of re-used assets from the DSi one and has seemed to come outta nowhere.

This game? This game looks like Watforward trying to make a Shantae game that's BIG. Half the stretch goals are bonus chapters. BONUS CONTENT. They're not promising ports or anything like that they're promising extra levels! Extra transformations! A side campaign! That combined with a more detailed sprite style, the fact it's getting a home console release on all fronts just seems to me like this is is a game they WANT to be big. And they wanna ask the fans to see if they can invest enough to MAKE IT BIG.

So yea, that's why I'm kinda leery about people who use arguments that're (ironically) as substanceless as "THERE'S NOTHING THERE"

The game without stretch goals is only three chapters. The stretch goals would make it a good size if they got over three times what they were asking, but without much interesting shown and with not a ton of content promised in the basic package, yeah there's not much there. If all these bonus chapters were not stretch goals that likely won't be reached anyway, but rather part of the original goal, that would be a good goal. Make the first big Shantae game. But they're not, so it isn't.

That's because THEY'RE ASKING FOR IT. They want to gather interest and see if it's WORTH making a big Shantae game. Saying "Oh this game doesn't look too big" when it's clear they want it to be bigger but can't because they're not Nintendo or some other huge company that has to resort to making the Licensed Smurfs 2 game should indicate what this Kickstarter is about. They want to see if people WANT an actual large scale fully-done Shantae game of that size.

Probably in part because meeting outrageous Kickstarter targets is fairly difficult, whereas meeting (and vastly exceeding) modest goals is a lot more doable.

It's the classic nerd trap that you're falling into here, I think--"it must be perfect or it's not worth doing." This sort of thinking probably holds back more nerdy creative types than any other thing in the world, because it stops people from achieving modest success since they refuse to accept anything less than phenomenal success.

I'm not saying it has to be perfect, I'm saying it has to be impressive somehow. Or at the very least, it should try to be impressive. I don't think it really asks for too much to say that the Kickstarter is for a big Shantae game, instead of a Shantae game that could get bigger. My whole deal from the start of this was that the Kickstarter's lacking direction and doesn't have something to draw people in besides the brand, as a thought on why it's lacking the funds it needs. It's not hard to see how people wouldn't be lured in by the idea of another flash in the pan when another one is coming anyway, and the idea that it could be bigger is hidden in the stretch goals.
