With SteamOS free and downloadable, I'm not even sure if there's much of a point in SteamBox. Just grab a Raspberry Pi or something and put it on there.

Not sure if serious. Explain what are you talking about, because I am pretty sure a Raspberry Pi won't be able to run that many games on Steam.

Reading over the announcement page again, it looks like they're directly competing against the XBone:
>Music, TV, Movies
>Family Sharing/Options
Aside from the known Family Sharing, I reckon this will work like Profiles on XBone.

Big Picture. Also, at the end of the FAQ there's this:

>Am I going to be using a mouse and a keyboard in the living-room?
>If you want. But Steam and SteamOS work well with gamepads, too. Stay tuned, though - we have some more to say very soon on the topic of input.
>very soon
So perhaps Friday's announcement is about a custom gamepad?

What are good games to use with Big Picture mode tonight to get the final part of the badge requirements? I'm already planning on trying Super Meat Boy and Binding of Isaac, what others should I give a shot (assuming I have them)?

Other than knowing the final name of the damn thing, what was the point of today's announcement? Pretty much everything said was previously known info, or at least suspected.

Assuming you just mean "games that are good to play with a controller" and looking through your library, I'd say Cave Story, Psychonauts, or Arkham Asylum.

Aw, thanks. I didn't mean you actually had to look through my games, I meant "don't worry if I own them or not, just make suggestions". And yes, for those that work well with a controller. :P

But I wound up playing FEZ for a few hours. Badge got, fingers crossed!

I guess the biggest question for me, regarding the Steam OS, is how it handles doing non-Steam things. Like Photoshop. Or non-Steam games. I mean, if it really does increase game performance by 15-20% as rumored, I'm not above trying it out, at least.
>> No. 180972
>>180969
It probably will handle those things as well as any good Linux distro does.
>> No. 180973
>>180969
It probably improves game performance by ditching all non-game processes. It probably either lacks multitasking, or disables most multitasking until the game process finishes.
>> No. 180977
>>180973
Doubtful. Since it's built off Linux, they'll likely keep all the libraries fully intact to make it easy for current Linux users to migrate to SteamOS, if they want.

What will go is X11, which is often the source of problems for the layman. They'll have their own graphics UI in place of that, like Google does with Android.

I could see a game-centric mode, intended to eek every last bit of power from the PC as possible, which unloads non-critical libraries, but it won't be an all-the-time thing.
>> No. 180978
Valve made a blog post a while back in which they said that when they ported Left 4 Dead to Linux, they got a significant performance increase. Windows isn't performance-neutral.

Neither Valve nor Google "own" OpenGL, which has been an alternative to DirectX for a while now.

You're getting confused about terminology. Graphics UI, not Graphics API. Linux has a number of different graphical UIs, the three most common of which are Gnome, KDE, and X11.
>> No. 180999

I never said they did. And X11 != DirectX 11 (that would be DX11).

So there's a Steam Halloween Sale going on from now until Nov 1st.
Any good titles worth picking up?

The Overlord Complete Pack is well worth the 5 bucks. That's 60+ hours of very good games. The graphics might be a bit dated, but they're a ton of fun. It's basically Pikmin, but full of crude and black humor. It also encourages you to be an asshole, which is great.
DMC 4 is amazing and disappointing at the same time. The combat is easily the best combat that has graced videogames to this date, the cutscenes and characters are great and the PC port is one of the most well-optimized games available on PC, period. But it is highly repetitive. Not so much that in that you button mash your way through wave after wave of enemies, but instead you have to go through every level twice (and beat every boss three times) in the course of the story because they needed to stretch the somewhat lacking content of the game something fierce. Which leaves a bit of a sour aftertaste, even though they add a really fucking rad twist to going through the game a second time. But, if you like character action games, DEFINITELY worth your money.
The Darksiders games are great, too. But don't buy them. Pirate them. The devs won't be seeing any of the money. All you'd do is finance another Dead Island.

I'm officially calling the Steam Summer Sale Trading Card Investment Scheme a failure. There are still 60,000 per card up for sale, and it's still cheaper than what I bought them at. Current rate is ~30/day, which means that it's at least another year until the amount gets cut in half and prices might start to really rise, and I'm not a long-term investor.

Guess I'll just make Badges in order to boost my Level and increase my booster pack drop rate.

Blarg, and I hit the max level with 2 full sets (and a number of extras) to go. Guess I'll just hold onto them.

Unless... anyone need these? I'll trade 2 Steam Summer Sale Trading Cards per 1 Trading Card from a game. Cards for games I'm looking for are:
TF2, Portal 2, Binding of Isaac, Half Life 2, Bioshock Infinite, or Psychonauts

I'll do 3 cards for 1 of the TF2 ones I'm currently missing (Engie, Spy.)

Seems to be working fine first time. I ran the MOUT course during boot camp taking out most of them with a rocket launcher because my rifle had no more boolets after the target shooting, took one of their AK's.

The biggest issue with the engine is pretty much resource allocation. In a nut shell, Low tends to mean that it shifts the processes to the CPU whereas high shifts it to the GPU.

So, you literally can get better performance from very high than very low. This applies to texture detail and shadow detail mainly. If it's choppy, lower object detail since this actually controls polygons rendered. And terrain detail only deals with render distance of said objects.

And these console launch lines can also help squeeze out performance.

-cpuCount=(how many cores you have) -maxMem=(How much system RAM you have) -maxVram=(How much video RAM you have)

I really wish I had gotten the Ultimate edition of New Vegas. Now that I've finished the main questline and nearly all of the sidequests in Fallout 3, and I've started playing the DLCs quests, I feel like the vanilla version of New Vegas just won't be enough.

I'm gonna delay playing through it until I've got at least a couple of the DLCs if not all.

Shadowrun Returns is now 40% off on Steam because of the sale, is it worth buying now?
>> No. 183241
It hurts seeing all the game you bought sometime in the past at a cheaper price.
My friend has this odd wasteful quirk where he rebuys all his games for multiple platforms. I see games here I played on Xbox now availible for pennies like Terraria or Half Minute Hero and I feel a desire to purchase them, but then I remember I already played them to the point of losing interesting so why bother?
>> No. 183243
>>183240
No. Only ever buy stuff as a daily deal or as a flash sale. The current discount will last until december 3rd, so there's really no rush to get it right this instant. And this way you won't be kicking yourself later on if it becomes even cheaper a few days from now.
