Icewind Dale has become a bit of a chore. The main story is quite alright, but it's just really, really linear. I guess there's a reason why it's not held in quite such a high regard as other Infinity games. Also, the ambushes of massive enemy hordes popping in out of nowhere is getting really tiring. I'm tempted to just slide the slider down to very easy and rush through the rest of the game.

Was Skyward Sword made by the DS team? Because a lot of the puzzles, progression, area of invincible enemies you have to find safety from and generalized regions that unlock with story progression feel the same. Like they where going for a sea/land/air sort of thing.

I never played the DS games. However, the invincible enemy areas are basically straight out of Twilight Princess, which had the same setup with a slightly different reason for doing so. I think the only difference is that Twilight Princess didn't have the "step in this and wake the Guardians" water. (Did it?)

No, stop, don't do that. Do not let this affect Blood Dragon. That game NEEDS to do well because companies really need to see that something like it and Undead Nightmare is a viable tactic. An entire subgenre of AAA titles released at full price, then followed up by these weird genre twists which come out for cheap because they reuse engine and assets. That is a GOOD THING.

Undead Nightmare actually genuinely disturbed me. After spending a whole game with these characters, seeing them under such different conditions was a little alarming.

Blood Dragon I don't actually want to buy because I was not that big a fan of Far Cry 3. It was big and pretty, sure, but I feel like the rest of it was rather bland, and the neatest things about it got shoved aside for a sub-par story and and gunplay that I would describe as "passable". Blood Dragon seems to me like boiling down the game to a 10th of its' size and concentrating that wasn't really that interesting anyway.

>a prevailing cancer that is shredding the integrity of modern games.
If it's a cancer, it's basil cell carcinoma.

The integrity of video games is rotten to the core for a whole shitload of reasons and a few small time titles made for fun (oddly enough, people like having fun with video games) are far, far from even really tarnishing video games.

Truth be told, it'd be like tarnishing the RMS Titanic at this point.

I absolutely don't understand this, Skyrim's intro is pretty much a how to on vidya intros. It tells you everything you need to know, is decently paced and has great atmosphere (particularly that first bit when you're just on the cart and Ralof is talking, his VA is pretty great there).

If you're lucky, gamebryo will even fuck up and the archer will go sliding along, so you'll get a bug intro too (as I did the first time I saw Skyrim).

Anyway:
So Guacamelee is a fun game, and I got up to the point where all that was left was the last level (the Great Temple) and cleaning house. I opted to do the latter, which was a mistake because I found out the Orbs were a thing in doing so.

And that's when I found "Tree Tops."

This is exactly what happened with VVVVV. Great game, really enjoying it, and then suddenly I wander in on something that my pride won't let me abandon in-game and my rage/lack of skill won't let me conquer. In VVVVV's case, i was Veni Vidi Vichi that caused me to just drop the whole thing in frustration, in Guacamelee's it's Tree Tops.

Guacamelee is a cool Metroivania with some decent jokes, fun combat, and challenging, varied platforming. Definitely check it out if you can, it's great, but my own personality has shot me in the foot here.

This pretty much.
My problem was that I used to always play a game for a couple hours without the memory card in, so that in case I screwed something up, like investing all my stat points into Defense to become an unkillable tank, when it turns out Defense does jack shit, I could learn from my mistakes and not have them permanently affect me.
So I made it all the way through the fuckin' intro without a memory card in, then turned it off and tried to go through it with the card in the next day, and just...I couldn't.
And I tried again the next week, and instantly got bored, and couldn't.
And I tried again in a couple months, same problem.
3 years later I managed to fight through how unendingly boring it was and get through it.
Got maybe halfway through the game and quit, haven't touched it or the KH series since.

I actually had that exact same problem with Twilight Princess. Did the same shit, and couldn't seem to force myself to play through the incredibly boring intro sequence a second time.

For those unaware, Chloe Sagal, the dev behind Homesick, attempted suicide on Twitch. She reportedly took some pills and rested on her bed before the channel was taken down. She's apparently okay now and in medical care.

Allistair Pinsof from Destructoid has spoken out on Twitter and confirmed what many suspected of Sagal's suspended fundraiser: it was a cover up for a botched sex-change surgery. What I find disturbing is that he was blackmailed from revealing this info, due to fear of Sagal taking her life.

These things are not mutually exclusive. And I'm simply shocked that anyone would defend her actions. It goes to show how effective this stuff is for guilt-tripping people. Suddenly she became the victim. And if you read her posts, it's simply disgusting how suggestively they are worded. She's wording them as if people are putting a gun to her head. Talking repeatedly about how she's in constant danger because people are driving her to suicide as if she has no choice in the matter. She's taking the innocence of everyone involved hostage and is making her victims out to be the villain in this scenario, which is simply disgusting. As someone who had to live through this shit with a sister who attempted suicide (obviously, popping pills with someone there to witness it; wouldn't want to actually die while doing this shit, right?) to get out of paying for a con she got busted on, with a family on its breaking point for years on end, I simply cannot feel any sympathy for this person. This surprises me because, despite the consumer backlash, online passes made sense to me. So long as a new pass was a reasonable price, and lacking a pass didn't lock out single-player content on a disc, it would be useful for supporting online servers for a longer time (assuming a centrally hosted system) as well as gauging popularity over time, which is helpful if a game somehow gets a second wind (admittedly rare). It seemed like reasonable DRM.

But I guess I'm in the minority.

So I recently got the Alpha pack for Xenonauts. The last time I tried the game was last year with the Kickstarter demo.

That was v10.2, now its up to v16.5.

I have to say, there are a number of changes I approve of. Particularly the fact that Alenium grenades and missiles become standard for no additional cost after you research Alenium explosives. Things used to be expensive as hell to make.

I was talking to a bunch of friends over how wreaked Silent Hill is and what would make for a good Silent Hill and we started to go towards the roots of medical aspects but decided we should go for something different if we were gonna do it so we went with mental illness born out of "curing" the sane, things like conversion therapy, drowning torture to emulate rebirth, being forced through suffocating sheet tunnels to replicate being born.

The main character would be a repressed homosexual with a complicated past with possible murders and sins to be sorted out, enemies focused on suffocation, alteration, manipulation and deceit.

Classic tank controls with pre-rendered environments.

The main thing to remember is subtlety, Silent Hill really isn't a hard concept to write about and it's sort of amazing it's been so poorly handled.
>> No. 174522
>>174518
I think there's more to it than that. And that's exactly why we haven't had a Silent Hill that's quite the same flavor or brand as the original trilogy. Because the formula has been compromised and gone from a bag of unknowns that nobody is sure of -why- those things are how they are, to staples of the series. Things people are expecting, and things the fans want to keep putting in. Like the walking corpses in 2, and how they were put in the movie despite having absolutely nothing to do with the story or the first game. In all three games, almost nothing but plot centric stuff is too spelled out for you. You have to draw your own conclusions, be vigilant and look around you. You are, for all intents and purposes, walking through a land and place with its own history, with weird shit walking around that predicates on things you aren't even aware existed yay-long ago. Things that exist but get no explanation of exposition. Some stuff is allegory, some cigars are just cigars.

At this point it'd probably be easier to create a surreal horror game that's only tangentially related. Team Silent isn't doing this anymore, and the big book of SH related information is probably the closest thing to a loveletter to the fans saying, "our influence on this series, and by extension the possible breadth of depth, is over."

Homecoming felt soulless. I never played downpour.
>> No. 174524
>>174522
But that's what I'm saying, it needs a completely new everything, Homecoming was a movie attempt with Downpour being a bit of a mess but along the right thinking of an original story.

Downpour actually had an interesting idea in that you were going through other people silent hills but ultimately failed to make the story cohesive enough to carry that narrative, it also failed in what is possibly the most important aspect of a Silent Hill game being monster design.

Again I think it's really not hard to write a silent hill game, it's just that the most important aspects are being forgotten, combat should be in the games but most often a bad idea, the story should be subtle with the monsters not specifically named and their shapes obscured enough for multiple interpretation.

Oh and not forgetting to avoid FUCKING STUPID gimmicks like Downpours rediculously stretched meaning behind the rain mechanic, The Rooms absurd ghost shit or being laughably unfrightening like Shattered Memories Raw Shocks and ice world gimmicks.

Isn't moving through an Otherworld fueled by another person's neuroses something SH1 and The Room already dabbled in, though? I would rank Downpour a little higher as a game experience if it had put more thought and uniqueness into the "levels" rather than using the stock horror game environments and reusing enemies, but it's still building off those earlier entries. As for combat you can kill pretty much everything you see in SH2 if you play on the lower difficulty levels and don't suck at scavenging for supplies And not only is that game considered the best, it has the weakest combat mechanics as well.

I just this weekend put in a new SSD and a new video card into my system. I can plug in some more RAM for the cost of a game, and once I do that I've pretty much maxed out my current rig (the proc I have on the board is the second-best the board the can do, so the next upgrade will be a mobo/proc combo). Sure, I could get an even better video card or even *more* RAM, but I'll get diminishing returns on those.

Thanks to past sales, I still have 50ish games just on Steam to even begin playing, so I can easily skip this entire generation (especially with all the console games getting ported to PC; remember when it was the other way?) and miss nothing. And we're a little over a month away from the next Steam sale event...

So with PS4's "We have the option for devs to lock a game to a console, but it's not on by default, but you can be sure that most publishers will turn it on", XB1's "you can play used games if you pay a fee (equal to or greater than the game's MSRP)" and Nintendo's "but it has a tablet and that's awesome, right? Right? Bueller?", not to mention all three giving heavy focus to THINGS THAT AREN'T GAMES, I may just sit this entire generation out and hope they all learn from each others' mistakes for the next round.

I know that feel, bro--for a long time I didn't have a capable computer, only a shitty laptop I paid far too much for; at best I could run the original Half-Life. If you have any money to spare, start by getting a good motherboard and lowball the other parts, then upgrade over time. Until then, I recommend looking into SCUMMs/Point-and-clicks and other older PC games that still have plenty of fun and character (like Monkey Island).

Anyway, I wasn't trying to brag (I wrote in generalities, saying nothing specific about my system except that I have an SSD; "hardcore" gamers would blow my system out of the water), just explain why I have no need for this gen after spending the last three snapping them up.

Especially interesting will be Nintendo and if they can bring anything to the table to counteract the crap that is the Wii U. We'll probably get the new bundle/battery/WiiMote charger they announced for Japan yesterday(?), more news on Wind Waker HD and LttP2. It will be interesting if they can bring anything to the table that can steal the show's buzz, though something like Zelda U, a new Star Fox or (proper) Metroid title, or a huge amount of info for SSBU might do it.

Will briefly cover Pokemon, but not anything new, will show a brief trailer for the new Smash bros which will just be a cut scene of Mario, Samus, Link, and Pikachu in a locker room. Mario walks out the door but trips and corrects himself before falling. He winks at the camera. When the lights go back on; the Nintendo staff is met with hundreds of raised middle fingers.

From what I've seen of the game it's primary strength comes from pacing where you are essentially given your instructions by Joel himself as he tries to teach Ellie, enemies are sparse; clustered and dangerous with supplies feeling decidedly like trash rather than med-kits and in the streets.

The most disliked part of the game and seemingly the only disliked by reviewers part being that it has those Tomb Raider hanging trap infinite ammo moments which most people say feels super out of place since you go from like A SINGLE BULLET CAN KILL AN ENEMY IF I'M ACCURATE ENOUGH BUT I'M UP AGAINST SIX GUYS AND I'VE GOT THREE BULLETS to OH MY GOD SHOOT LIKE A MILLION BULLETS AT A MILLION GUY RUSHING YOU!! but most waved saying the segment was small.

I don't understand. Arcane studios loosing money is just as bad for Bethesda. Everyone is loosing massive bank in that situation. The actual ownership of the company is nothing if you can't have the staff to back it up. What actual reason is there for them to own Arcane if they went out of their way to damage it so much the company would be of far less value on every angle? If you want a branch company, make a branch company. Hollowing out another through a self damning project wastes even more time money and staff.

Just got an idea for a game: Multi-path game with choices affecting story, EXCEPT when you do another play through, the story of your prior playthroughs will randomly bleed over/pop-up for a minute. Kind of like Tears from Bioshock Infinite, but you cross over without realizing it (unless the area suddenly changes) and are pulled back from it.

For instance, you make decision X in an earlier game, and Comrade 1 lives. In a later game, you choose Y, and s/he dies. But, at a point later in the game, she's suddenly behind you and asking you a question she asked you in the prior game due to a Bleed.

I'm sure this would work best for scripted events, but ideally it would be random during gameplay, which could be helpful or hurtful. Maybe a random bleed takes out a building of enemies for a moment, allowing you to quickly skirt it; or, maybe a bleed gives them better cover for a moment, so you have a harder time picking them off.

I remember when the early Naruto/DBZ fighting games caused a huge buzz because their graphics were comparable to the actual shows (and this has only improved since then, Ni No Kuni being the current high bar of simulated animation graphics.) I'm sure people would be far more interested if it was in a 2D style, especially if it was a cartoon 2D style that didn't just have short animation loops like simple children's games, but actually responded fully to interactions. Those that know of and love Fantasia do so, at least in large part, for the animation, so avoiding that is stupid.

Relatively low cost, small footprint and easy to hook up to a TV, extremely hackable, and some work with the existing Google Play ecosystem meaning they launch supporting thousands of titles (from crap to gold), some of which you may already own on an Android Phone and so can download there. (Ouya uses a curated list, so you don't have that kind of access out of the box.)

They could also upset the Big Three console makers, especially when all three are being pants-on-head retarded for this next gen.

For me, the big lure (especially for the MOJO) is in a great emulator box that I can hook up to my TV and run thousands of old games off of.

I'm hesitant about the Ouya for the same reason I was initially hesitant about the first XBOX. It's a new console, we don't know if it has any staying power, we don't know how well the console/controller handles.

But even if the XBOX One suffers a hit next console cycle, it still did a lot better than a lot of other consoles did as a whole, so I'm hoping to be proven wrong with the Ouya, too.

I'm not convinced Mirror's Edge was a video game so much as a tech demo yet.

For whatever reason, DICE has been very closed off with community support in this past generation and have put out games without mod capabilities. This wouldn't be a huge issue on its own unless the games they pumped out also turned out to have garbage map design, which they did.

I would have loved Mirror's Edge if the levels were made with flexibility and flow. They weren't. This could have been made up if they let players make and share their own maps. They didn't. A multiplayer mode would have at least kept me interested for more than 4 hours. That wasn't in there, either.

It's an interesting concept that they delivered on in terms of demonstrating the movement system. Unfortunately, this was dropped into an absolute shitstain of an actual "game" framework that required you to work to actually find it, or in PC players' case, actually break the game to make it work yourself.

I liked it, but it wasn't a game. Not a full retail game, at least.

Just as often complete lack of armor doesn't even matter because magic lets them do everything better than everyone else, including defending themselves.

Especially in tabletop games, because having rules interpreted by a DM instead of a game engine gives a lot more flexibility for player ability in general and magic in particular.

GM RANT MODE ENGAGED

OK listen. Just because D&D 3.5 was made by a wizard-loving fanboy doesn't mean magic has to fucking function this way. It DOES in certain games (IE: D&D 3.5, Mage: The Awakening/Ascension, Ars Magica) but here's the thing you always need to remember about Magic: IT'S FUCKING MAGIC.

It can be as powerful as you want. But it can also be as SHITTY as you want. Hell there are systems out there where magic just plain IS shit and not worth taking at all! Not very GOOD systems mind you, but still. You can say that magic takes you 3 weeks to create like, a small orb of fire. Or it takes you a million years just to lift a small vase off the ground. All of those can potentially be how your magic systems operate because magic doesn't have any set or defined rules! Yes this means magic is prime for abuse by people who just don't know better, but here's the thing. When you're a GAME DESIGNER?

We trust you to make things as fair and as balanced as possible. Yes we understand rule 0 is essential. Yes we understand that there's always going to be elements or rules that might not have been play-tested as hard-set as others, and will need errata or to be outright ignored in some instances. But YOUR JOB should be to make large, sweeping archetypes fair and balanced or at least as close to fair and balanced as possible. Just because "magic" is more of a blank-check than "fighting ability" doesn't mean you have to make it the superior option. If that was the case then you'd have no reason to make ANY OTHER CLASS OR ARCHETYPE! (oh also: fuck anyone who says 'Fighters are suppose to be a beginner class' in D&D. Just fuck you)

Magic is only as balanced or imbalanced as you tool it to be. The fact that it IS magic is no excuse to its pretense of powers or abilities, and how you implement magic and those who use it is FAR MORE important than just saying "it's magic" and then giving the wizard every goddamn ability and power under the sun just because you can justify it better than you can with a fighter.

(this has been your tabletop rpg rant for the day, thank you and goodnight)

Right.

I didn't mean magic class are inherently overpowered, just that physical weakness is used as an excuse for such even when it makes no functional difference. That happening is bullshit, is my point.

I heard about the iOS port, and that it was recently (as in less than two weeks ago) updated to improve the loading times, lessen the animation slowdown, and sharpened up the graphics a bit--a bunch of stuff that was in the Japan-only Android version.

I've been thinking about getting it for either my iPhone or an iPad I could borrow from a family member, but heard the menus are hard to navigate because they haven't been resized.

I thought /v/ was being silly and facetious with that whole Adam Sessler drug abuse thing. Holy shit, I wasn't prepared for those videos. That was scary and sad.

Adam Sessler's Best & Worst of E3 2013youtube thumb Just as an example. He's like this in all E3 videos.

All these nerds talking about drug abuse...ever been to a conference for four consecutive days with cameras on you every waking hour while you try to scream over all the music, noise, and other interviews going on around you?

Check that again. Four consecutive days. Multiple hours a day. Video interviews. Sitting for hours during showcases. Standing in line at booths. Hour. After hour. After hour. Shouting the entire time. With bright lights strobing constantly.

E3 is fun to watch. It's not fun being there. Not after the first day or so.

SO HEY does anyone know how i'd get the international version of FF12 running on my computer? Im sort of on a kick and the license board system in this seems WAY more efficient

I'd like to know as well. I hear FF12 International is like a whole 'nother game, with the license boards acting like classes almost, and infinitely more polished and playable than the original.

PCSX2 worked fine without really adjusting anything when I played it.
I'm glad they added the fast-forward button in the International release, it was way too slow when I tried playing the original on my PS2.

My other worry is like... would an old-ish computer be able to PLAY it? Like it's just a little laptop, you know? It can play half life 2 and team fortress and like. Bastion. And thats pretty much it.

If you can't run it, there's an LP of Zodiac Edition on SA.

I've been skimming it a bit, it's informative and really does seem to take care of most of my FF12 complaints.

Unlikely then, sorry. PS2 emulators are really processor intensive. Can't hurt to give it a try, though.

Ive already played FFXII though. I'm not interested in watching someone else play it, I wanted to try out the new license board and stuff, you know? Play it for myself since I really do enjoy the living hell out of that game even with its obnoxious license board system. The class system just sounds like itd be much more manageable. plus watching other people play video games is boring

Dammit. Well Ill give it a shot tonight and hope for the best.

Do you not have your PS2 anymore? It's a lot easier to mod a PS2 to play out-of-region games than to get a computer running a PS2 emulator. It's like $25-30 for Magic Disc and a swipe card, and you've got to pop the front off of your PS2 tray thingy, and that's it. Just start the console with Magic Disc, use the swipe thingy to pull out the tray without disengaging the lock, put in the game you want to run, and hit Go in Magic Disc. That's how I played FFXII IZJS.

Oh wow, that update does look cool. Yeah, it was an iOS port of the GBA re-release. I didn't really mind the slowdown and stuff, it was manageable. Would be rough if you'd just gotten the device and were still figuring out how to touch things precisely.

The PSP re-release, not GBA.

Or, you could not spend any money at all and just use FreeMCBoot.

I'm in the U.S., and I know who he is, but only through a Swedish LP'er I watch often. Wish there was English subtitles.

Tried playing Kingdom Hearts I again today. The camera system is so annoying (L2 and R2 what the hell how did I play this so long ago) that I'm just going to skip it and play II instead.
