So, apparently, Naughty Dog almost made a realistic-looking Jak & Daxter reboot, but just in time realized the idea is fucking retarded.

I can't see it ever working in a realistic art style.

For me, cartoony games, comics, etc. have their place and exist for a certain feel of story, and I can't imagine Jak and Daxter without the signature goofiness, wisecracking, and cartoony humor.

Yeah. Because for starters there's a talking weasel in the title.

I still need to finish Jak II. I've gotten to the part where Kiera finally reveals herself (because I guess they assumed no one would play Jak I and know it was her the first time you went to her autoshop), but I haven't picked it up in weeks.

I never bothered with Jak I, but Jak II always felt as though it was unnecessarily "dark." Like, dark in the sense a person tries to make something dark, but it doesn't mesh very well. It was and is a good (if unnecessarily hard in some spots) game, but the darker, slightly more serious tone always felt a little forced. I liken it to how Street Fighter II changed the tone of the less than remarkable first game. People played it and just decided "okay we'll go with this. Whatever."

It's also slightly disappointing that less was done with the Dark and Light Eco powers. When will we get a Jak game where one of the objectives and sequences is to rampage around as Dark Jak for an extended period of time like the Predator, going invisible and the snktbubbing things? You go invisible when you want to avoid detection, get in, do a ton of damage and sneak out. It's like giving a protagonist the ability to mind control or shrink people, but giving it little to no gameplay functionality. Why bother?

I eagerly await a Jak&Daxter that isn't on a cell phone or a racing game.

Actually, people played it and just decided "WOAH THIS IS BADASS AND WAY BETTER THAN JAK I!"

Sure it feels a little forced, that's because it is. The only reason it's like that is because GTA3 was HUGE at the time. That shit changed the industry. But I think the game changed for the better. It's not like the story suddenly became uninteresting or got WAY dark and serious. Both Jak AND Daxter became more likable.

Won't disagree, because I agree with you. But, in a way, it's like they went Loonatics Unleashed. Kinda.
It did make for better games with more conflict and story.

Jak II was the first one I played. After going back to Jak 1, I was like... "meh".

I think I am the only one who played Jak I and was sad that the rest of the series wasn't like that. I've had enough gritty games with Dark [X] in them.

The thing is: when Jak 1 was released it was following what was trendy at the time.

IE: Collect a thon styled platformers ala Banjo Kazooie and Mario 64.

Naughty Dog make polished games but original? No. Not at all. They're constantly following trends in videogames and tend to adapt their production to what's popular.

It's why the Last of Us is a Zombie survival game most likely.

I guess I still sorta want a game like that. Light-hearted, cartoony, funny...at the time, it wasn't super original, but now that that phase has passed and everything is grim, I want something like that back. I've had enough depressing games for a lifetime.

If this were 2003 though, you'd say you were tired of "kiddy" style games and that you want more dark and serious type stuff. Because that's what it was at the time. It's only now that people are going "UGH GRIMDARK WHERE'S THE FUN?!" and people are looking back at the last decade going "Lol what were we thinking?" And 10 years from now we'll do it again. And again. And again.

Not me. I've only ever been into cute, funny, cartoony games. It's just that for me, what I like happened to be what was briefly popular.

I've tried getting into serious, grimdark games, or anything with realistic graphics, and it never sticks, unless it's something Valve makes (and even then, I play way more TF2 than I have Portal/HL2/L4D combined).

I don't think I ever though games got too cartoony, if anything I might have been getting fewer games in general, though that makes little sense because I mostly just asked for a few things on Chirstmas and birthday. Only played Grand Theft Auto because my older bother got it, and even then mostly either flipped the car a lot or actually tried to see how long I could actually drive safely and not get into any sort of wreck.

...Actually, now that I think of it, I probably just didn't even look at Playstation games due to being big into reading Nintendo Power at the time and presuming most games for other consoles were already either dark/gritty or sports games. I do remember renting Jack & Daxter, and greatly enjoyed it, but we were only allowed to rent that one since at the time I think we had a rule of only actually buying games for birthday and Christmas, or at least only rarely buying games otherwise. ...Actually, now that I've remembered a bit more, I'm fairly certain I took one look at Jak 2 and decided to outright refuse to play it, just because of the shift in tone. That reminds me I got the first game for five bucks not that long ago, I really ought to get to playing the console games more often instead of letting this backlog pile up.

Fun fact: PlayStation made mature games mainstream, when Sony decided to target the 15+ gaming market for the first time in history.

PlayStation European TV Commer…youtube thumb
Just watch this and tell yourself this is not targeted at a more muchoore audience.

>Fun fact: PlayStation made mature games mainstream,

I'd suggest that was more Doom and Mortal Kombat's fault, myself.

Eh, not really. They had gore, sure, but it was was a slapstick violence where the evil characters are all literal demons and hilariously giant-muscled shoguns who steal the souls of billions, yet refuses to utters words more impolite than "Don't make me laugh." You can have good characters fight each other, but everyone is either blatantly a bad guy or has some reasonable to good excuse to fight, at least in story mode. You even technically beat people up in more cartoonish games, so I don't think it's the violence itself really. In Grand Theft Auto III, you're an ordinary guy who joins and betrays/is betrayed by multiple crime rings in a corrupt city with a bitter, racist populace that doesn't care what harm you cause unless it's towards them. And I don't remember Playstation 2 games getting anything like the Mortal Kombat cartoons or the Doom comic.

OK lemme put it like this here.

Saying Jak II is "grimderp" is like saying Sonic SATAM is grimderp in comparison to The Adventures of Sonic The Hedgehog.

Technically you're right? But it's entirely misleading. This is still a game where the BBEG is a time-travelling lizard guy who harnesses mystical energy to conquer reality.

It's just no longer completely goofy and nonsensical about it. Yes there's guns and there's armour and the occasional foul word but that doesn't instantly make something a grimderp edgy reboot like Shadow the Hedgehog.

Jak II is still... well... fun in tone? I guess? Like there ain't any cheesy Final Fantasy Esq melodrama going on and the time travel plotline is one of the few that made sense in retrospect (just cause it was... relatively simple for a time-travel plot).

I still highly recommend it, even if you're into fun kid games cause it still plays out LIKE a cartoon. Just a cartoon for an older audience, if that makes sense.

I meant in a more indirect way; the graphic violence and resultant public outrage from Doom/MK paved the way for the essentially self destructive arguments of "videogames aren't just for kids" that the Playstation eventually ran with in a way that actually did manage to create some entertaining and sometimes critically worthwhile 'adult' games.

I think so too, but since I didn't want to play it I stuck with my initial reaction. I think I did consider giving it a chance for a bit, and remember trying out some flying vehicle for a few minutes, but I either figured supporting the game then would encourage going even further in that direction and/or really wanted to make sure I played the games in order. I'll try to play Jak II after I've cleared the first one, though.

>>173223
Ah, that makes sense then.
