Kinda sorta. I like the idea, but it will only be useful when
A) more games support it, and
B) You can use it to fire in a direction that is not the one you're moving

I'm personally waiting for someone to hack together something using the Move and the Rift (I figure the Move has the best setup for motion controls with the Rift.)

Point B has been addressed by Valve.

As far as I can tell, you can look and move independently (so I can look behind myself as I run away) with some modes, but you still appear to be firing in the same direction you're facing, given a certain cone of freedom when firing (like Metroid Prime 3). I'm talking moving forward, but shooting to the side.

Though I didn't watch the whole video, just the opening part with Heavy. Do they show off moving in one direction and firing in another later on?

Yeah. I think 7 different experimental control modes.

I'm friggin' stoked for this. No longer will I have to even think about investing in TrackIR. I'll just build a FreeTrack set up as a stopgap. Any word on whether or not it's 6 degrees of freedom?

The video talks about how it's only spherical, i.e. no Z-axis movement. It only moves your vision around a spherical plane within a game. However, an Oculus Rift guy in the video says that they want the final product to include Z-axis.

I have to praise the OR guys for finding a shittier way of playing FPS than a controller.

Yeah, I can't imagine this being enjoyable outside of sims, to be honest. I'd keep it to my flight sims and ArmA where you benefit from head movement.

As soon as games can disconnect aim, FOV, and movement, FPSes will take on a new level in ability and strategy. Currently all of these are locked into the same area (with some games maybe offering a bit of freedom with aim), but being able to do cover fire or weapon ready in one direction, while you move in a second, and check your surroundings in a third to make sure no one is getting the drop on you is extremely important in real-world tactical situations.

From what I've seen (with admittedly little digging) is that we've been able to get to two directions, but not yet three. Still better than nothing.

I wish I could remember the name of that fancy gun shaped controller.
I bet those that would go well with Oculus Rift.

That is currently possible in the ArmA's if you free up your head movement by hitting asterisk.

However, I think the FPS Market is a bad place to be trying to wedge this in. The Sim market makes more sense from a practical standpoint, but not so much a financial one, obviously.

I'm curious to see what the OR offers up in regards to Strike Suit Zero, since it supports the OR.

The first person perspective does tend lend itself to that genre rather well.

Realistically, you'd be better off getting a Wii remote, blue tooth dongle, and downloading GlovePIE.

>>174949
Indeed. A huge part of good survival horror is the feeling of vulnerability. Having the less-than-omnisicient first person point of view is a good step.

But that doesn't provide feedback!
You can't let go of the controller and watch it fall and then bounce back up a little because your virtual gun arm landed on something.

Pretty shitty. I'm hoping that a portion of my eventual purchase goes towards helping his family, honestly.
