>Live TV will require a supported receiver device with HDMI output
Which could be something like a cable box; not necessarily something XBox-branded that everyone would have to buy. Though anyone hoping to hook it up to their coax will be sorely disappointed. Guess there was no room on the tapedeck for a coax connector...

With the recent change by the FCC that cable companies can encrypt their channels, thereby requiring a cable box for any subscriber (and you know almost all of them will jump on this) this news is almost a non-starter in the USA. However, Microsoft still fails because they're focusing so much on cable in a time when cable subscriptions are dropping like flies as people realize they're paying way too much for shit: http://www.webpronews.com/cordcutting-on-the-rise-cable-subscriptions-projected-to-shrink-over-the-next-few-years-2013-01 And if sports leagues and specialist channels like HBO get their shit together and just release their own, paid, online streaming packages, that number will likely drop even further because it's the #1 reason to get cable.

IGN News - Xbox One to be Region-locked?youtube thumb
>> No. 174920
Microsoft has confirmed that Xbox One will be region locked and that Kinect won't spy on you. Furthermore, you'll actually be able to turn off Xbox One's Kinect altogether if you want. First, let's deal with the region locking bit.

“Similar to the movie and music industry, games must meet country-specific regulatory guidelines before they are cleared for sale,” a Microsoft spokesperson told Digital Trends. “We will continue to work with our partners to follow these guidelines with Xbox One.”

On Xbox 360, region encoding was left to the discretion of publishers, which means the same rule could apply to Xbox One and some titles from overseas may still be available to import.

And if you want to shut Kinect off on Xbox One, there'll be options to do just that in order to retain your privacy. "If you want privacy, we'll give you modes that ensure your privacy," Microsoft's Jeff Henshaw explained to CNET. "And we actually have a little bit about this on the web already. We will have something similar for the Kinect with Xbox One."

Retailer and rental chain Blockbuster has also reported record pre-orders on Xbox One, indicating that despite all of the confusion surrounding the console's used games policy, people apparently still want one. We'll be bringing you more on Xbox One from E3 early next month.

I think they declare bankruptcy on a two-year cycle.

And trying to get an idea of trends from Blockbuster is like seeing how popular McDonald's is by polling only those who earn more than $1MM a year.
>> No. 174927
How would one even go about ordering a Xbox One from Blockbuster? I mean are they talking about rentals? Because that has been shown to be kinda a dead market with Xbox One at the moment.
>> No. 174930

While I haven't stepped foot inside a blockbuster in nearly a decade, I believe part of their approach to not dying a horrible death by missing out on digital sales and stuff like RedBox was to start selling movies/games/consoles as well as renting them out.

The Xbox One reveal attracted over 8.45 million people, Microsoft has revealed.

The figures contribute to what the company is calling, "one of the top-most concurrent streamed events of all time."

To back this up, the stream as delivered by Akamai outperformed the 2010 World Cup, the 2011 Royal Wedding and the 2012 US election in terms of concurrent viewership.

Meanwhile, over on Spike TV the event attracted 1.73 million and according to Nielsen was the top television show for men aged18-34. At 10am. On May 21.

The stats as delivered by Microsoft are perhaps a little over enthusiastically interpreted, but regardless, it’s pretty clear that the event was watched by a whole heap of people.

As far as gamers are concerned though, E3 will be the main event, as we finally get to see the 15 Xbox One platform exclusives Microsoft has lined up.

We’re rather excited.

Microsoft has set aside around $1 billion to secure exclusive Xbox One games, says Don Mattrick.

Amidst accusations that the company has abandoned gamers in favour of a broader audience, Mattrick said, "We just ran through our [release slate] and counted the number of exclusives, and looked at the amount of money that we're spending and the deals that we have...”

"I think, candidly, people are way, way under-indexing how hard we're punching."

"There are great hits, there's innovation, and there are world class creators plugged in," he continued. "You know, I keep track of it all, and I hope everyone here does - we kind of look back at all the different years and at what we shipped, how many units have sold. There's a lot of hyperbole about things, but I think we're going to deliver."

Microsoft has already revealed that it has 15 exclusive games lined up for the Xbox One during its first year on shelves, 8 of which are brand new properties. And while the console’s reveal was light on games, E3 promises to bring fireworks.

All eyes on Microsoft’s June 10th E3 press conference then.

People hate you right now for reasons other than your lack of exclusives. How are they missing this?
I don't give a shit how many exclusives they have. I'm not going to pay someone stupid crazy high amounts of money to get fucked in the ass with a sandpaper cock, more money so their brother can watch, and more still so they can come back and do it to me every month just so I can have 15 lollipop flavors I can only get from this guy.

So no, I no longer care about Halo; or that there's going to be a new killer instinct game simply because I don't want to deal with your shit. Hell I don't even care if you manage to make Mass Effect 4 an exclusive and I love that series.

A couple of demonstration videos for Microsoft's next-generation Kinect that will be bundled with Xbox One have been released, showing off the 'eyes, ears and brains' of the device.

In the first 'eyes and ears' video, the 3D vision and the larger field view of the 1080p 2D colour camera are showcased, demonstrating the greater fidelity next-gen Kinect has to offer. In fact, it has three times the fidelity of Xbox 360's Kinect, meaning you'll be able to discern even small details, like wrinkles in clothing, facial expressions and fingers.

It's hoped that this will make for more accurate, natural interaction and greater engagement with Kinect games. The increased field of vision meanwhile, enables players to stand closer or further away from Kinect. Audio accuracy has also been improved immensely.

Processing power covers the 'brains' video, with speech, facial, digital signal processing and skeletal tracking all helping to deliver greater precision and accuracy to Kinect experiences. Up to six players can also now be individually recognised by Kinect within the same field of vision.

It really amuses me how much this article unintentionally brings up the similarity between the Xbox One launch and that of Windows 8. Oh, so it's a guaranteed hit because Microsoft is riffing off a competitor's walled garden approach? And we'll all buy it because we bought the last one? What a sound argument.
