What did everyone here think of Persona 4 Golden?

Biggest issue I have is that like a lot of RPG's with a picking your own dialogue option, you have a lot of options but always a "right" one. You can play Yu as an asshole or as a cool guy or as a saint, but the game has very specific relation specs and "points" you get from hanging out with others and how you talk to them with little clarity on just what the right thing to say is.

To the point that, basically, if you want to 100% all social links and get the true end you have to know an inordinate amount of stuff and basically follow a fucking guide.

Oh and also FUCK the Adachi social link. Seriously, who ever heard about making a link where you always knew where to approach the guy and what days you could get it down. Not to mention you have to get it up to a certain level before you rescue Nanako so just fuck you if you wanna get his S link without a guide or aren't obsessively looking for Adachi everywhere on every goddamn day.

But I guess I'm bitching. It's a great game! It's just damn I wish it wasn't so... nitpicky about which dialogue options are the most optimal ones. At least in Mass Effect maxing Paragon/Renegade was simple enough to follow as the most optimal strategy, here you could get zilch from complimenting Kanji on something but get +2 horse points for calling him an asshole.

That's sort of the point, though. You don't get to define a personality for Yu, his personality is defined by whoever he's talking to at the time. The whole idea of him not having a fixed Persona/Arcana is that he's basically someone with very little identity of his own who says exactly what everyone wants to hear in order to become better friends with them. It's also why you get a bonus to the amount of Relationship-Points you gain with someone when you have a persona of their arcana equipped - it's easier for you to slip into the role they want you to be.

I'm certain that, if you were to ask two maxed Social-Link-people (except maybe some of the main party members) in Inaba to describe who Yu really is deep down, you'd get two VERY different answers.

I didn't name any names, yet shockingly both of you knew exactly who I was referring to.

Bad additions to a story that was already a solid whole.

>>171795
And that's sort of a problem with this series I hope they change in V, since playing a blank slate is only fun if you get to actually fucking roleplay. Either give us more choice or do some goddamn writing Atlus.

See that just makes it sound like Yu is some weird ass automaton.

At least Sheperd has some manner of personality... albeit a schizophrenic one.

>>171806
>>171813

Marie was... hard for me to pat down if I really liked her or not. I felt like her deal was an interesting one and her character was cool... but it was very transparent she was inserted into the story of Persona 4.

I don't feel like this is an issue with her character, so much an issue with the game obviously putting her in as some kind of... I dunno. Excuse to have another dungeon in there?

I don't mind her being the "good" reincarnation of Izanami since she WAS supposedly good before the underworld corrupted her but then GODS AND SHIT.

I feel like what she added to the story didn't really RUIN or CHANGE anything... it just made the story a bit more light-hearted. Which probably pisses off people who want Persona and SMT to be grim and dark all the time, but then P4 has always been the lightest of the SMT games out there.

Agreed on Marie, she's a hard character to pin down. On the one hand she's a character that I SHOULD adore because she hits all of my tsundere-buttons. On the other hand, pretty much every scene she's in sets off several loud 'MARY SUE ALERT' warning bells in my head.

I'm okay with Marie, but I can very easily see why people can't stand her if they dislike characters with her personality-type.
>> No. 171841
Haven't played Golden personally (lolbuyingaVita) but I've seen all of Marie's story stuff and yeah she feels about as tacked on as I suspected she would, and a lot of the people I've talked to who went into Golden not known P4's plot all remark about how out of place she feels.

No sir, I don't like it... although it's still less dumb than the Adachi link.

As someone who never played P4 in the original version, I can say that the Adachi link felt entirely natural, and I'm not even sure how his character arc could be anywhere near as intense for someone who didn't do his S. Link.

lol ok

no but for real P4G is pretty much the best possible version of Persona 4? the only real deal with it is that thanks to all of this new shit but a relatively unchanged battle system (in terms of enemies and shit), the game is pretty easy unless you ratchet it up to the highest possible difficulty level

also the adacho slink is perfection

Yes okay Nurse you want to fuck Adachi. That doesn't make it good writing. Nor does it excuse that awful new epilogue or a bunch of the other dumb things Golden jams in.

What's bad about the epilogue?

I mean outside of "HURR KANJI LOOKS AWFUL" but everyone else seemed in on it so it wasn't like they wanted you to take it seriously.

>>171851
I exaggerate. Really the epilogue's problem is the same as the rest of the extra stuff in the Golden: it just adds absolutely nothing. I don't care about Namatame becoming mayor or knowing how the shopping district/junes thing played out (in fact I think that particular bit of social commentary is hurt by providing a concrete resolution).

As for nitpicks like Kanji's design, yeah it's bad but if I were to nitpick on that level I'd rather complain about Chie's awful new VA, not that I haven't been annoyed at that since the very first time I heard anything from Arena.

To me the problem with Golden really is mostly just Marie being a crow-barred in addition that blocks people out from the biggest gameplay addition if they can't stand her (which, reading the Golden LP thread on SA, seems to be the majority opinion).
>> No. 171869
Having said all that, if you own a Vita, you are not playing anything else on it, so if you've never played Persona 4 before, a bad port is better than not playing it at all.

>it just adds absolutely nothing

I think it adds one thing. Specifically: the idea that this really is a very lighthearted Persona game.

Marie is the "good" interpretation of Izanami and takes over her role, Yu comes back after a while and meets his friends again (meaning the ending isn't so much a goodbye anymore) and well... I guess it adds the feeling that the game's more or less not nearly as horrific as it was before.

Really, I think the BIGGEST ISSUE isn't so much that Marie or Adachi S links detract from the overall game any more than any of the other elements (even if you argue they're "unnecessary" well, half the S links in the GAME are unnecessary. Did we really need to learn about the social dynamic of this girl and her adopted son? Or the basketball player wine about being adopted? I mean yea Adachi's S link is all over the place but I already covered that) it's more that you can kinda tell when things were sewn into the game.

Though I dunno if that's actually the case or just people more familiar with the original Persona 4 noticing the new stuff added in more transparently than others.

It's not a BAD port of Persona 4. Nothing about the additional content RUINS the game. Even if you argue it's unnecessary, well, there are worse things than being unnecessary. Like unwanted.

As for Chie's new VA I .... really didn't get why people were so butthurt about it. I mean I hear her voice clips too and they sounded weird and awkward the first time (probably cause I think they choose the WORST MOMENTS. I dunno why but those specific instances were bad. The rest of the time she was pretty much meh).

Really, it just seemed like she went from sounding much older to sounding much YOUNGER. Neither voice really FIT her I think, but she sounded pretty good in Arena so I dunno there.
>> No. 171884
I guess I'm not really sure what the argument is here? Because obviously being on a portable system alone makes it a better game than the PS2 version. I don't see how we're slinging around terms like "bad port," when the only other version available is more or less exactly the same game, only on an outdated system that most people don't have connected to their TVs anymore and that they have to sit in front of their TVs to play.
>> No. 171925
Didn't we already have a Persona/SMT thread?

I don't know, I played the living shit out of this game and really liked Marie, even if I kinda keep forgetting she exists.

Also, I just slogged through P3: FES and The Answer, The Golden adding things like skill cards and simply choosing inherited skills was a godsend in retrospect. Seriously, it was like "Well, we added skillcards in P3P, what do we do now?" "Can we ditch this inheritance system? I mean, the hardcore players are just gonna keep reloading until they get the perfect skillset anyway, it just seems like we'll save people a couple hours and a lot of headaches."

Whoever came up with that deserves a medal.

It's just a better version of P4 overall. A few things feel really clunky and tacked on, yeah (I'm looking at you, double dose of fanservicey animated cutscenes)

I really need to fire up a second playthrough, though, because I actually didn't manage to pull off Adachi's S. Link.

>>171795

Oddly enough, I felt that way about the P3 protagonist, and not this guy, but that was because some of the answers you gave people in P3 were usually destructive, and/or contradictory between characters. At least in P4, the best answer was occasionally telling somebody to get their head out of their ass.

Got Arena for 20 because of the holiday sale.

Holy FUCK, I knew that new Chie was awful, but I'd never heard new Yukiko before jesus christ. Also I will never get used to Charlie talking, though JYB is his usally Yeah Sure It's JYB Whatever self.

I do appreciate the shockingly evil music room background. And also the fact that there's clearly a very robust game in here, even if I'd forgotten half the moves before even finishing the tutorial and have essentially no plans to do anything but the super easy story modes.
>> No. 181986
Oh wait Yukiko's apparently the same VA, just doing the wrong voice. Well whatever.

>Implying new Chie isn't a whole world of improvement over old Chie
>Implying old Chie didn't sound like a space alien trying to imitate human speech from a vague description

I mean new Chie isn't fantastic but at least I can listen to her speak without cringing and frantically hammering the conversation progression button until she stops talking.

Also there is no new Yukiko, Yukiko has been voiced by Amanda Winn-Lee in every game or piece of media she's appeared in.

No matter what, though, you'll definitely join me in rejoicing at Fuuka's new voice.

I like new Chie a lot. She's not amazing by any means when you're not comparing it to her horribad old voice, but her voice is still kind of adorable so I like listening to it. And I never cared much for Yukiko's voice, though it wasn't quite so bad as old Chie.

At this point I'm assuming that Elizabeth's story only unlocks after you've beaten all of the others. I've completely cleared Labrys, Chie, Teddie, and Naoto, with my last cliffhanger save being Aigis. Other than that I've got part of Charlie's done.

Erin Fitzgerald really knocked it out of the park during the confrontation with Namatame wherein Chie expressed intense horror, bewilderment and disbelief as her teammates entertained the idea of murdering him.

Happy Anniversary Persona 4: The Golden!
>> No. 183640
Finished P4G two days ago. This was my first Persona game, so I didn't know what to expect. Found myself addictive to the game after I passed the hour-long visual novel intro. The year-long narrative of mystery solving and socializing was entertaining. Hell, I didn't even mind everything being solved with the power of friendship, since the game sets that up with all the troubled people you can help and befriend.

Really pleased with the battle system and how I could auto-pilot my standard attacks on enemies. Surprised by how little grinding I had to do. Mostly repeated a dungeon once to gain experience, then fused more Personas and strengthened my bonds with my teammates. The random generated dungeons were fine, but could have used more spark. Spicing things up by making you backtrack to a previous floor, just because you finally have a key to open a locked door, isn't really spicing things up.

Gathering clues got repetitive, though, since you'll end up talking to the same 5 NPCs throughout the game. And then again the next day, for more information. Same goes for the side quests, which is just "Bring me this item. Got it? Good. Now bring me another one."

Guys, I'm not sure how far or deep this Youtube debacle will go, but I wanted to share a little something with you.

For those that don't have saves next to their favorite scenes, or just want to see their beloved scenarios play out while they work on other stuff, this guy, RandomPl0x has some HD videos of Persona 4: The Golden, like actual high quality capture stuff, don't let the small view count fool you:

http://www.youtube.com/user/RandomChannelPlox/search?query=golden+hd

Now after you find the scenes you like, you can head on over with their URLs to keepvid.com so you can download your own 480p, 720p, or even 1080p copy of it. So stuff like the beach trip, valentine's event, family moments, boss battles or social link displays can be at your finger tips whenever you feel like having a life or cry.

Just getting that out there because, again, I don't know if these high quality vids will be up forever.
