It's the absolute most unnecessary class you could possibly have.

They're pretty decent if you just stack that AOE headshot line and use the Sydney Sleeper.

Still, there are way more useful classes to pick.
>> No. 171308
>>171297
The Sleeper isn't that useful because you always have to wait a second for it to mark anything (when there are a billion other ways to get minicrits, like normal Jarate, Buff Banners and Sandman balls). The same for primary charge-speed upgrades: you get best results by just putting as much into Sniper Rifle firing speed and take successive headshots as fast as possible.

And Jarate is great at stopping the Super-Scouts that can move the bomb cross-map in less than twenty seconds or just slowing down the hoards in general.

The biggest reason not to play it (separate from the mission and the rest of the team) is that every decent loadout is functionally identical to Sniper Rifle + Jarate, so it gets boring after too long.

Jarate; slows by 40 and gives minicrites, sniper does 2-5k damage depending on upgrades and hit location, plus explosive headshot can kill off an octomedic heavy in one shot before they can even compute uber. Hitman's heatmaker turns sniper into a crit machine gun that can knock out 2-3 mighty robots with a skilled trigger finger.

The only grace spy has over sniper is that he can instakill certain big robots like the steel fists and collect money.

The great fault in MVM, especially at higher levels, is people think it's all DPS. I've seen people try and make 3 other people go heavy on a tank wave just for the damage. Instead of maybe asking the pyro to get a crit can or maybe getting one himself, instead of letting the scout and demo take out the super scouts, instead of asking the engie to move his sentry into the path of the tank and use a wrangler, he just wanted literally tonnes of bullets flying everywhere.

DPS serves tactics, not the other way around. You can't win shit with a team full of heavies (I've tried {Oddly though you can almost do it with a team of gunslinger engies[Or demos<Pyros especially, they can strongarm a wave like nobody's business>]}). The meat of MVM is the smaller robots; if you don't kill them fast enough you get swarmed and then it's too late to take on the deflectors and rapids. You can do this with a sniper because of both mentioned before. Engie is best at this, demoman is great especially if you use the singles method, heavy requires too much aiming and moves too slow but is still good. The cherry on top, tho, are medics, engies, and snipers. They fuck over even the best teams by sheer virtue of fucknuggetry. Coincidentally these classes are a fucking pushover for snipers because of their slow or nonexistent movement speed and penchant for standing in large groups for those sweet explosive headshots.

Moral of the story is that snipers don't inherently blow, you just have to not suck at it. And most people do %99 of their lobby training in soldier or demo so everybody blows. I've done probably 300 hours of expert/advanced missions in BC (Because fuck tickets) and every time we had a good sniper there was next to no issue with the later level specials, disregarding that one giant engie but that's a whole nother bucket of fuck. If you need any further convincing, imagine koth_sawmill; except everyone on the other team has their walk key stuck, can't see past 20 feet, and had to follow a certain path. Also, your sniper can kill 12 of them in one shot, reloads and recharges fast enough to do a full shot every 1.2 seconds, your jarate is ready 3 times a minute and nobody bothers trying to attack you.

I main demo for the stickyjumps and traps, but I have still seen plenty a decent or even fantastic sniper be voted off on other people's shitty tactics; which always seem to boil down to kill all of them now regardless of type, instead of maybe letting the scout carry the bomb so a pyro can airblast him off path over and over while you deal with the hulking deflector heavies and charged soldiers who now do not have the bomb and as such do not have crits or regen, then just killing the tiny little melee scout with maybe 400 health and %80 speed. MVM isn't about damage; it's about doing the right amount of damage to the right classes. Super simple stuff.

Screencap of gunslinger engie team:
http://puu.sh/2oa3l

I'd be more than happy to discuss said tactics here, or in the TF2 thread. That's what I always get peeved about tho, people blaming their bad tactics on other people not doing what they say. MVM is %90 planning and so many people think that by just investing in the %25 DAM+ and wishing upon a star and believing in themselves they can get through a wave by just shooting everything.

My peeve in TF2 is shitty MVM tactics and the blamegame that follows. Seen it over and over again and it gets older each time. I don't have a whole lot of peeves in other games besides gmod cuz alot of others games are either forgettable or great.

In general tho, anyone who says "Play the game!" like the point of it is to win instead of have fun. Seriously, what the fuck. KDR hasn't been a thing since the Nixon administration, you're doing this in your fun time for free calm down and let us spycrab.

Yeah, I'll sure have lots of fun losing because some IT'S FUN YOU ASSHOLE people are effectively AFK. TF2 is a TEAM game.

Also, where do people pick up an attitude like "winning is not fun"? Seriously, what?
>> No. 171374
>>171367
It's less "winning is not fun," and more of "this guy is taking losing way too seriously." PLAYING is fun, regardless of outcome (excluding getting absolutely stomped). I play with a group of people on Blacks Ops 2, absolutely great guys to play with. But the moment we lose a match (even if it was like 75-74/200-188 in the end), a few of them will immediately begin bitching and playing the blame game.

I fucking love those matches that end up close; it's intense as fuck, and winning feels like climbing to the top of a mountain. Losing by that close just means we met our match. Not the end of the world, as much people think it does. Related, though:

>Blaming the guy with a ridiculous amounts of defends (20+) for why the team lost a point
>Playing an objective based game mode, not playing the objective, then getting pissy when they lose
>Guy calls the other team fags because they used shotguns on a close range map. Was using sniper rifles all game.

>that glorious, monstrous feel when you crush the entire enemy team within seconds beneath glorious LMG fire
>Getting all your killstreaks in one breath

Depending on the game, winning can be criminally boring. I'd rather get 11 of my friends together and have an all spy team disguise as blu on Badwater. Just their reactions is more entertaining than 500 victories. Same thing with MWanything using shields and UT with the hammer. After 1k+ hours of winning stuff you look for other things to do. SLAG is great at this. If I had the option to lose but laugh my ass off doing it I would never win a match ever. TF2 is a TEAM game and that means it's about the COMMUNITY and they're made up of PEOPLE who are here to have FUN. At the end of the day what matters is that you had a good time, and I'll be damned it having a team full of demopans isn't riotous.

>>171374
This essentially. And being stomped can be fun too if you just sorta roll over and make it hilarious. If I have people together we'll all go heavy and get some signs with the French flag on them, just walking over to the other base to surrender.

If your idea of fun is doing nothing then don't complain when people object, because you ruin the fun of other people who would rather actually play the game.
It can be hilarious if the entire team is in on it, but when it's just a few people who refuse to play but still take up slots and then get mad when called out? That's usually called griefing.

Also
>Depending on the game, winning can be criminally boring.

How about playing a better game instead of disrupting the game for people who do like it? Is you fun more important than other people's fun?

Trolling is one thing, but insisting on being accepted for it?

>>171408
>"You lose all the time because you're terrible, not because the game has design flaws."

Nothing wrong with that statement. Even if the game has design flaws, you lost because your opponent was better at exploiting them. If a game's flaws make the game unfun for you, play something else.

Well yeah, but my question is, what is it?

Keep in mind I'm talking about using suboptimal tactics/equipment specifically to prevent my team from winning. If we are winning too much in my personal estimation, I will play a spy, or a soldier, or melee only in order to make my team lose and the game "more fun" in my estimation.

Clearly there is a border between that and griefing. The question, and perhaps genuine disagreement, is where do we draw that line, and what are the key qualifying features.

> If we are winning too much in my personal estimation, I will play a spy, or a soldier, or melee only in order to make my team lose

That'd be griefing, but it doesn't have much to do with your choice of class or equipment.

The difference between a bad or suboptimal player and an idler is that the first one is at least trying, while the latter actively insists on being unhelpful.

People who defend their idling with "lol u 2 srs", "y u hate fun" and similar nonsense have no reason to complain about people attacking them.

Also, do you actually enjoy actively sabotaging your team? Your statement sounds like you're fishing for some sort of OMG I HATE YOU DIE FAGGOT response.
When I feel that my team is winning too easily I sometimes switch to classes/weapons I don't use often, but the point of that is using a different playstyle, not "to make my team lose".

>Nothing wrong with that statement. Even if the game has design flaws, you lost because your opponent was better at exploiting them. If a game's flaws make the game unfun for you, play something else.

This would be more valid if the design flaws were being willfully exploited by players, and not just general problems with the game that elevate some people based on location and connection rather than actual skill.

I feel the need to defend myself here because I recently had a friend of mine suggest this to me about Black Ops 2. He asked why I disliked the game, then, when I presented him with a laundry list of the issues with the game, most notably Broken Cameras and Offline "La…youtube thumb

He had the gall to suggest that I was losing because I was bad at the game.

In the same breath he told me that watching tactics videos pertaining to the game, using more than 2 loadouts, and trying to keep my KDR positive were all silly notions. Because it isn't like Winning is fun, and not losing all the time is also fun. He also suggested that I had a heavy dose of nostalgia goggles because my last prefered CoD was MW2, and it isn't like Activision gutted Infinity Ward after that game and handed the majority of the responsibilities over to Treyarch, who haven't made a good game since Tony Hawk.

It's really frustrating to consistently place in the top 3 of my team, no matter which side, and then be told that the reason I keep losing is because "I'm not good". I may not be amazing but I know for a fact that a lot of my enemies get to see me before I ever see them, as I watch it on their killcams. It's frustrating when every other game I play shows me to be a middle-of-the-road player, not the best but not the most useless bastard in the lobby, and this game, with such obviously horribly broken lag comp, has me consistently failing.

It's like the rage over glitching. If there's a glitch that overpowers everyone who uses it, obviously that redefines the game, but it breaks the game in ways the developers do not have a method for fixing, generally. I am the constant victim of a glitch; a glitch that is unactivated by players and is based more on their geographic location, not skill. It literally made the game almost unplayable for me and I did end up trading it in.

I know my friend didn't mean to be insulting, but that's exactly what he was. I do not make these claims frivolously, or without evidence. I make these claims because these are the exact kinds of problems Black Ops 1, Modern Warfare 3, and Black Ops 2 all have. And shockingly, they're all made by the same development team.

So many people focus on "it's in the game, therefor it's legal" mentality. The idea that developers are human, and can fuck up in big ways, seems very alien to many people when I try to talk about issues like this. Even the idea that they need to keep up with a game now because it will be patched on Day 1 seems to escape some people. I wonder if my friend even knows about the March Title Update, and the concurrent tweaks to various weapons beyond getting into a game one day and thinking "huh, this feels better for some reason".

The problem is that you're reading an article about competitive play. Sirlin has another article on Playing NOT to Win that's specifically about reminding people that you don't always have to play that way when you're playing for fun, in non-competitive environments. He's referring to scrubs dismissively in this article because it's about tournament play.

Additionally, he uses it mostly to refer to a certain type of newbie, rather than all newbies in general. The type who makes up house rules for the game that are never really part of the game, and consider it unfair for competitive players not to abide by those arbitrary house rules--like, say, using a single move over and over again against an opponent who doesn't know how to counter it.

Incidentally, Sirlin's articles on game design are some of the best I've ever read in terms of laying out game design theory and competitive balancing.

Also, I do not play to win OR to lose. I play to play. Winning a game can be fun but after 3 thousand hours of winning the same maps you look for other shit to do. STAR, LP, and SLAG are what happens, or lobbies. As of now I just sit around as a heavy in the middle of the map eating the sandvich, watching what other people do. On pub servers %95 of people just kill me. On custom and priv servers they go heavy and we all have a picnic most times, followed by gentlemann boxing. That's alot more fun than playing the same game mode for literally the thousandth time. UT didn't have this because UT is a fuckfest that's over in 2 minutes or less depending on who gets the rifle. DoTA same thing, time reversed. There's a few other games where I do this too, and even singleplayer games. It's just fun to have fun, whatever fun it is.

But it's just true in some cases. It's a harsh truth sometimes. Character X does not have that or this option that Character Y has in this or that situation. That's what makes a good character in a fighting game in particular. Options. Things they can do in any given situation, and not all characters have as many or as good as some others.
A better player playing Character X will still beat a worse player playing Character Y certainly, but only through time and work to bring to light before now unknown abilities, an even tussle between X and Y will end with a W for the latter. Dig?

I would have given up long ago, but there are two reasons I'm still shooting for 100%:

* There's a very brief after-credits scene that is apparently pretty funny.
* I've been told that Meat Circus is very difficult, and being that I am kind of...not good at video games attimes, I want to be prepared. I'm already up to the bare minimum suggested level for it, though, Level 90, which is when you learn Regeneration, and I saved all of the kids' brains so far. So at least I have Max Health and Regen.

Long story short: If someone is so hung up on religion or lack of religion that they won't give a game a chance, even if they'd probably like it for other reasons, they're a moron.

Persona has a lot more to do with Jungian Philosophy and Shintoism than it does with any western religion. Shin Megami Tensei deals with Christian demons/devils and things more directly, but in Persona the bad things all more or less come from human hearts and minds, not from evil divine forced.

At least that's true in 3 and 4. I haven't played 1 or 2, so I can neither confirm nor deny that statement in their case.
