The other one already hit the limit, and apologies for the OP pic. I think I should have better ones for general, but anyways...

Also, something interesting for discussion:

I was thinking it was hopeless when it spent like three weeks between tiers 1 and 2, but it's getting there pretty quickly.

$60 is more than I'll usually pay even for a new game I want, but two newish games I want for $30 sounds fine.

Does pre-ordering Infinite as a gift still give you the XCOM copy? I know you don't get promotionals until you put the game in your library.

I have a similar feel. I play a lot of TF2, and I'm starting to make my way through my other collection, starting with the single-player stuff, but there's still a bunch of games I haven't even touched. Part of it is for practical reasons, I had too much stuff on my hard drive in general, so there was no room for games.

The other was for a reason I admit was kind of stupid. I get nervous to start a new game. I don't consider myself very skilled at any game, regardless of genre, and I see enough "if you don't beat this game in [x] hours or less with 100% completion you're an idiot" online to scrutinize myself a lot. And then I'm too tense to actually enjoy said game.

I don't think this should need to be said, but not all gamers are alike or have the same tastes.

I've met people who have tried to be friends with me because we both were gamers, but their tastes were strictly RTS'es and very serious realistic games, and every time I mentioned one of the cartoony platformers or RPG's I liked I was met with disdain by him.

I mentioned once awhile back that this is why I think gaming magazines are becoming less popular. Not everyone cares about every game coming out, and it's easier to just search a gaming website's tabs to read only information about specific games you actually care about. But I only speak from my own experience, I can't say whether this is characteristic of all gamers. Probably isn't.

They've been using that same soapbox for months to now to explain...something about why the game may not be well received I guess. That's... really weird. Like hasn't Samus been around? Lara Croft? Jill Valentine?

Who the fuck is telling this guy this, because I wouldn't do business with that company. That Gamesutra itself might be engaged in PR campaigns is a little disturbing itself, I always considered them a more neutral site.

I don't necessarily mean to jump start another piracy debate, but this little gem caught my eye:
http://gamasutra.com/blogs/TommyRefenes/20130318/188683/Apathy_and_refunds_are_more_dangerous_than_piracy.php

Really good points about customer relations and how to combat piracy. After SimCity and just EA in general, I would definitely like to see more companies adhere to making fun games rather than "trying to shaft our customers for money"

I'm pretty sure she's always been fair of hair outside of the very earliest days when it was all over the shop depending on the artist.

And to be honest Revelations takes place BEFORE she pushes Wesker out a window and is missing-presumed-dead... it was only after that she went blonde.

http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/03/20/xbox-durango-requires-all-games-to-be-installed
>perhaps a troubling revelation for used game purchasers, the documentation includes a rather blunt reference to mandatory game installs.
>"Every Durango console will have a hard drive, although its exact capacity has not been chosen," reads help documentation in the Durango XDK. "It will be large enough, however, to hold a large number of games. All games will be installed on the hard drive. Play from the optical disc will not be supported."
>The documentation goes on to state Durango games will be distributed on Blu-ray discs, but the discs are purely used as a means to install data, and will not be read during gameplay.
>Also of note: the Durango will feature "Always On, Always Connected" online connectivity.
There's nothing that explicitly states it won't play used games, but a lot of that stuff is damning.

Between this and the PS4's "publishers will have the option of blocking used games, but it's up to the to use it" (which means all of them will use it), the Wii U might actually be the winner this generation because it won't limit used game use (AFAIK, though I'm sure Nintendo would love some of this action, since they consider used games "piracy".)

In a year Microsoft and Sony will be crying about their consoles not selling because mobile games recession blah blah when actually no gamers want to put up with their shit.

Sony has said that they wouldn't have that on any of their games. If they are honest about it, it's not as bad as XBox's. Personally, I think it's dumb for them to do it. Especially because it will limit and halt sales until the game becomes affordable. I think it's something a lot of publishers will utilize until they realize they just shot themselves in the foot and it rarely gets used if at all.

Gamestop talked me into getting a season pass (which, combined another deal deal with my Power Up Pro Rewards, gets me the guide for free) for Bioshock Infinite. Today I called them because I had this fear that I accidentally pre-ordered the 360 version of the game instead of the PC version; I did pre-order the PC version, but the idiot cashier rung up my season pass as a the 360 pass. What the hell am I going to do with a 360 pass for the PC?

Apparently, when I go in tomorrow to get the game, I can cancel this and get the PC version; however, the PC version is available yet, but I can "pre purchase" it (or something), which is somehow different from a pre-order. Whatever, if I don't get the guide free I'm not going to get either.

>Tomb Raider sold 3.4 million units worldwide since launch this month, Hitman: Absolution has moved 3.6 million copies to date, and Sleeping Dogs sold 1.75 million units since its summer launch.

>These figures do not account for digital sales.

>Square Enix said despite a "high critical acclaim" for each title, sales still came up short. In particular, the publisher called its North American sales force "ineffective," noting title sales in this region made up just a third of the number of units sold in Europe.

>Another reason why each game failed to meet sales expectations, Square Enix said, was due to price pressure being "strong." This forced the company to spend additional capital on channel costs like price protection.

I seriously don't know. Assume all those were sold at full price, that's 3.4*60=$204M net take, not sure what Squeenix's cut of that is (I think it's something like $35 per, so $119 million.) However, if the game cost $200M to make, then they either roughly break even or lose money.

On the other hand, if the game cost $200M to make, what the fuck were they doing to spend that much money? Hooker & Blow Fridays?

I'm still kind of bummed that there's no female opponents. Granted, in Portal, GLaDOS doesn't really have limbs (unless you count her robo-arm-thing), and Chell can't talk, so they'd probably not be good picks for poker opponents, but if you wanna go with Valve women, there's still Miss Pauling, Helen/The Administrator, and Alyx Vance. Actually, Helen vs. GLaDOS would be amazing, just several minutes of Ellen McLain snarking at herself.

Brock, Ash, and Heavy together would just be like that Manly Guys Doing Manly Things strip where Heavy, Duke Nukem, etc. all played D&D with Commander Badass and everyone picked Barbarian. ...Actually, I'd play the fuck out of that too, Dungeon Night At The Inventory.

Pauling and Helen are not visible enough to be included; Alyx is visible, but doesn't have a quirky personality, so she wouldn't fit in with a gallery of characters both literal and figurative.

I hope GLAdOS is more than just a background animation; I would love to hear her look over shoulders and snark like "Oh, you actually thought that was a good idea."
>> No. 171507

They could be, though. I know Ashly Burch is doing some kind of VA work with Valve, and I think she could play Miss Pauling. Although that may be for the TF2 mini-movie. Or maybe I'm totally off and she's gonna play someone in DoTA 2. I dunno, we'll have to see.

Alyx is kind of quirky. She's a bit of a dork with her lame "zombine" jokes and acting all cute and annoyed when her dad tries to get her to make babies with Gordon. Not as quirky as a cartoon character, but she's not in the right universe for that. Zoey would also be a good pick for a game like this. I actually like both her and Rochelle an awful lot, but I seem to be in the vast minority about liking Ro, so I pick Zoey.

Does anyone have any Opinions on Terraria?
Its showed up on ><bo>< Live and I gave the Trial a go... it seemed like a really really fiddly Minecraft-like game that gets really annoying during the night-phase.

I really need a new game to play and I feel like there's stuff I might like in it, but the controls are just like I said really fiddly and the gameplay in the trial did make you think of Minecraft but more aggravating.

It's kinda sad that D&D based games kinda died. Yeah, NWN 2 was a mess and didn't do a lot to help the case, but not so bad that the genre should have died with it. And Mask of the Betrayer was amazing.

Terraria is great. I have over 100 hours on it.

Yeah the first night is a bitch, you're gonna want to make a shelter IMMEDIATELY.

Then start working on mining. The hierarchy of equipment goes Copper, Iron, Silver, Gold, and then stuff you dont need to worry about right now. Also you get bonuses for complete sets of armor.

Also you NEED to build a base because there are NPCs who will sell you things (and also buy things from you)

There's also biomes that in the beginning if you step foot in you WILL be murdered.

As far as the controls I can't attest to that because I played on the PC.

I played through Digital: A Love Story. It's an alright game, though I always felt like I was being a little left out thanks to the decision to just imply all the player's "dialogue" through responses and message titles, and it felt like the plot jumped around at times.

The Amigaesque interface is cool and all, but dialing up numbers constantly is kind of annoying, and I hated how it would break everytime I tried to open notepad while dialing or daring to turn the music back on.

Music was straight up bitchin. Listen to this shit:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uwyQX-DQQ8A

Not sure if I like it more or less than Analogue. I felt like the whole Yes/No Responses Only conceit of Analogue kept things from feeling too disjointed, and although frustrating at times, it was frustrating in a way that it probably would be for the actual PC (though I still would rather the ability to tell *Mute off for her bullshit), but the game overall felt less... inspired? I hate using that vague term, but it didn't feel like Love's heart was in it with Analogue quite like it was in Digital. Maybe it was the ~animes~ I dunno.

Music was definitely better in Digital though.

A game can be cartoony in terms of art style and have a serious story, and a game can have photorealistic graphics and be cartoony and over the top in terms of plot.

It's just unfortunate, y'know? Not just in games, in pop culture in general. Like Persopolis and Maus. Both deal with very real, very dark times in history, and the art is very simple, but they're extremely serious.

It is also why I raise my eyebrow when people say "Cute, lighthearted kids' games...like Psychonauts!" You mean the game with dead, butchered rabbits, a genuinely creepy dentist doing brain surgery, children burned to death, mind rape, watching your father have sex with a memory of your dead mother, child abuse, and implied racism?

Update on the whole Poker Night business.

No confirmation from @GroovyBruce on whether it's him in Poker Night or not, but odds are it is and he's simply been voice-pitched to sound younger. Telltale's done it before when they were working on Back To The Future.

Sam's suit is now grey like it is in the comics. It was only blue because Telltale thought their shaders were too shite at the time for a grey suit to look interesting. I love the writing of the Sam and Max games, but I thought the Telltale graphics were awful, so this is relieving to hear and see.

Still no multiplayer. Telltale's word is not to ask for it. They think it defeats the purpose of interacting with the fictional characters.

It talks about the disparity between games and real life regarding connecting with people, including oneself. Like when you see a character or a scene in a story, not just a game's, and think someone's taken a page out of your life; maybe you hope nothing bad happens to that character, or you handle the scene in a different way than how you did in your own life, but the major difference is that reality's choices are seldom defined on a shiny user interface.

I have yet to read up on the larger context of the post so it may very well be a sob story like you say, but I can see it in the younger generation of my family; they're bright and able but their oversaturation in games and similar flashpoint media gives them a hairline's patience and extreme want for compensation with all their actions. I'm hoping it's just a phase, that they'll grow out of it just as the industry does, but I look around and fear for the future.

He's the Creative Director at Microsoft Studios. He is now an internet meme:

http://www.quickmeme.com/Always-Online-Adam-Orth/?upcoming

I'm sure Microsoft loves all the negative publicity they're getting for a console they haven't officially announced yet. They have no one to blame but themselves for being silent, as these damaging rumors spread. Orth's tweets were the closest thing we got on Microsoft sharing any Next Xbox info, so it's not surprising to see everybody jumping on them.

Meanwhile, the PS4 has generated nothing but positive buzz and great support from developers. I'm not a fan of the PA Report, but they summed up the situation well in this post:

>We buy consoles and we upgrade our PCs to play video games, and right now Sony, Valve, and even consoles like OUYA are doing everything they can to focus on games, and to support the developers who create those games. Microsoft's lack of transparency, silence, and need for control have never looked more anachronistic as they do now. Sony and Nintendo seem to be maturing and dealing with the changing ecosystem. Microsoft has yet to make any moves that make us believe they understand what's going on.

>Microsoft’s policies on downloadable games have long been developer-hostile, especially with the latest dashboard redesigns, but the rumors about the upcoming system are now making the next Xbox seem consumer hostile.

As much as I enjoyed the initial offering of the 360 as a product it's really kind of staled lately. Part of that is the game offerings (which, imo, have been a little lackluster as of late), but a large part of it is M$. The dashboard gets progressively worse with each update, and with the Windows 8 disaster, it's hard not to speculate how terrible the system might get now that it's formally a main project and not just a skunkworks project like it began as.

I really don't have any love for the PS4 either. Sony's really going to have to do something to make up for the lack of games in the previous gen and the lack of security. Maybe they're adapting now, but if the next round of consoles are going to be "Netflix" boxes, I'm really interested in Valve's offering, as Steam is already pre-established and usable across multiple platforms.

The whole 'console cycle' thing that's been going on is bullshit. There doesn't need to be a new console for every company 6 years after their previous one, I think they mostly do it to make money from hardware sales and please game developers since it allows them to do more. Also to 'compete' against other console companies, though I think this kind of competition is just off putting to most consumers.

Look at how long the PS2 and NES lasted, and how successful they both were, and the idea that new consoles are necessary to succeed is exposed as bullshit. Being angry that you have to pay upwards of $300 to play games (which are already expensive enough) when your current system(s) already provide that service is very reasonable. I recommend skipping the next generation of consoles, or at least waitin for significant price drops, and spending your free time on games you missed out on. It's what I'm doing.

Yes, you are getting old. You probably didn't even spend your own money on your last console. And now you have to spend your money on much more important shit like rent, gas or groceries, so the purchase seems much steeper and a lot less attractive. This console generation is about to be 8 years old when it finally passes. That's a third of my lifetime I could have spent playing with them until I had to replace them. Doesn't seem to be that bad of an investment to me and wanting to prolong it even more seems silly.

Well, my understanding is that the usual take per copy sold to the publisher is $35/per, so $35*3.6M= $126M.

This is only the first month sales, mind you. It will probably gross $200M by the end of the year. If the game cost more than $200M to make (or even $126M, for that matter), Squeenix is fucking crazy.

What other games are set in Mexico or involve Mexican (or Spanish/Mexican) motifs? I know of Guacamelee, Grim Fandango, the Black Velvetopia level in Psychonauts, and in a way, Dark Cloud (I always thought Toan's home town had a sort of Mexican feel to it).

The meme-usage in Guacamelee is incredibly harmless; They're just pictures. If they had any impact on the game's writing or otherwise, then I could see a complaint over this being justifiable. But they don't. In fact, they are but parodies of memes, giving them all an appropriate Spanish flavor. Not to mention the majority of posters and signs are more so video game references than meme references. So don't worry about that and just play Guacamelee which is a fantastic game.

As for other games with Spanish motifs, sorry, can't think of anything else.

I don't really follow Jim Sterling, but he's dead on in his latest video:

>Dark Souls can't be compared to Tomb Raider I'm told, because Dark Souls didn't have to pay Hollywood actors or build a brand new engine---but neither did Tomb Raider. I'm sick and tired of being told that AAA games are being forced as if by invisible gunpoint to invest decadent amounts of money in their games to the point where they need to sell more copies than reality itself is capable of providing. That's not a defense, that's just bad, bad, terribly bad, bad, and terribly bad business.

>See what happens when you don't blindly pump so much cash into a project, you don't need to bend reality to make more than your money back? Good things happen!

>There's a reason why From Software is pleased and Capcom and Square-Enix are kicking their bedroom walls like spoiled brats. Obviously, Dark Souls didn't cost as much to make. I mean---Resident Evil 6 had a dev team of six-hundred. Tomb Raider had to pay for extravagant hair physics and Hollywood actors.

>It was made in the real world, sensibly. It knew its audience, knew what to expect, and clearly budgeted accordingly. It made as many copies as it could sell and was thrilled to sell what it did. And it's not like Dark Souls looks or plays like shit. It looks gorgeous in fact and plays incredibly well. For Dark Souls to look as good as it does, play as tight as it does, and be happy with the sales it got? There's actually no excuse for the rest of the game industry

>Nobody's forcing publishers to sink ridiculous amounts of cash into projects. Most of the audience doesn't care about high fucking graphics and brand new engines. They just don't, no matter what Crytek tells you.

So with my tax returns finally in my bank account, im considering selling my 360 and making the switch to a PS3 instead. The other two major games coming out this year-- the Last of Us and Xillia-- are PS3 exclusives, and the PSN is free in comparison to $60 a year for the Xbox (and the only reason i WANT to connect my system to the internet is for Netflix). It helps that it plays Blurays and my brother has a collection of like 100+ blurays so I can go back to borrowing movies from him.

Does that sound, like, at all reasonable to you guys? Are there any particular ... things I'm not thinking of that might make me need to reconsider? I'm keeping the Xbox's hard drive for the future, in case i do end up buying another one down the line when they're cheaper.

Pretty much the same here, too. I'm actually relatively not-picky when it comes to games.

I like games with an interesting aesthetic. I'm actually not into realistic games all that much. The script has to be at least decent, I like a good story. It has to run decently-- a few bugs are fine, lag is understandable, but I want it to be playable, bare minimum. A decent variation in gameplay, not the same thing over and over. Difficulty shouldn't be a cakewalk, but at the same time, I'm not super amazing at video games, so I don't like super difficult games.

I'm getting better at playing harder games, and I've actually gone out and played games known for being more difficult to challenge myself, although I'm still not ready to try something like Dark Souls or the masocore genre just yet, nor do I really think it's "my thing". I'm still dealing with hecklers getting annoyed when I don't get every jump perfectly the first time, or when not every puzzle is obvious to me, but I don't give up.

I was pretty happy with my Xbox all this time, honestly. It played what I needed it to play. At my core, I still love me some Halo, but I'm content letting the series end for myself at Reach. I missed out on a few PS3 exclusives, mostly the Uncharteds since I was always a Jak fan, but since Im getting a PS3 now, they'll be cheaper so everyone wins. But the fact is that i want to keep getting Tales games in North America, so I WILL INDEED purchase an entire console for Tales of Xillia. its Persona 4 The Golden all over again.

The issue with activism in general is that with almost every issue, you have a group that is genuinely offended, and a group that doesn't give a shit. And maybe a group that is kinda iffy about it, but will let whatever happened slide. I'm not gonna say whether or not the people offended are of the group they're defending, because I honestly don't know, and it depends. Long story short, though, the reason nobody can agree on the proper way to deal with offensive stuff is because nobody, even within the group being insulted, can agree on what defines offensive stuff.

The thing that most bothered me about Heavenly Sword was that the anatomy of the main female character was weird, not her outfit, per se, but that's nitpicking.

All those times a gay man ever felt "off" growing up, all the teasing, all the bullying, the uncomfortable conversation of telling your parents, the subsequent fallout whether good or bad, and the disgust you get from a large sector of society is nothing more than an advertising tactic in the arsenal of this company. You have no idea how much that pisses me off. I've said it before and I'll say it again, EA doesn't give a damn about gay people. All we are to them is a meatshield to deflect criticism. Someone has a complaint about the ending?

Someone thinks the always online thing is DRM?

Honestly my objection to DC's character designs has absolutely nothing to do with feminism or anything else: they're just shitty character designs. I know this man can draw, so why did he choose not to do so for this game? Why is the only character who looks decent the knight?

Yep. Some 1TB HD are too big for it though, so be careful. Also, SSDs make no difference to the read speeds.

There's not really a code of conduct when it comes to online gaming manners. There's no right or wrong thing to do.

If they don't bring up you dying, there's no reason for you to. If you aren't playing in a tournament or something, it's just a game. Who cares if you lose?

The skintight suit is *Sexy*, and without her power armor she is *vulnerable*

Two things the Otaku like in a woman.

It got really bad in Other M when not only was she spazzing out at meeting Ridley, but for some reason her armor decided to vanish off her and the camera took a trip around her ass as she was freaking out and panicking.

Zero Suit was understandable in Zero Mission. She couldn't do jack shit in it, and she needed her Power Suit. And being on the GBA it really wasn't any more sexualised than any of the end screens of earlier 2D Metroids.

I haven't played Other M, but from what I've heard she loses her Power Suit for no other reason than losing her Power Suit.
>> No. 173513

Speaking from a functional standpoint, the armor is probably body tight itself with light padding on the inside, so any exposed skin is far more likely to chafe. The Zero Suit makes a lot more sense in this regard.

A power suit that disappears in moments of great danger/stress is the most unintentionally laughable concept ever, though I heard a great joke about it being plausible in a Robocop/Borderlands -esque universe where companies weigh human collateral as more expendeble than the price of the suit.
