So with the Joakim Mogren interview confirming the game is running on the FOX Engine, and Kojima's presentation at the GDC in ten days, it looks like they're kicking this shit into maximum overdrive.

When the sound is played backwards it resembles the A.I. pod's singing in Peace Walker.

Excuse me I should know what I'm talking about. I myself commissioned a genuine katana in Japan for 2,400,000 Yen (that's about $20,000) and have been practicing with it for almost 2 years now. I can even cut modern tanks apart with my katana
Japanese smiths spend years working on a single katana and fold it up to a million times to produce the finest blades known to mankind.
Katanas are thrice as sharp as European swords and thrice as hard for that matter too. Anything a longsword can cut through, a katana can cut through better. I'm pretty sure a katana could easily bisect a Metal Gear equipped with next-generation nanomachine-armor with a simple vertical slash.
Ever wonder why medieval Europe never bothered conquering Japan? That's right, they were too scared to fight the disciplined Samurai and their katanas of destruction. Even in World War II, American senators targeted the ninja with the katanas first because their killing power was feared and respected.
So what am I saying? Katanas are simply the best sword that the world has ever seen.

I played through the PSP version last year, all the way up to the final fight against Peace Walker with the nuke launch and all that. At that point I determined I hated the game because of the boss fights and controls and the fact that it was essentially Metal Gear Hunter, to the point you can even fight fucking Tigrex. I have people I'll be able to play with now, so hopefully it'll be less infuriating this way.

I kinda like Raiden being a ninja cause it follows through him using the FOX blade in MGS2 and I think it works for his progression.

Also TBH while I like MGS2 Raiden, I think MGS2 had a lot of story issues and a lot of that got shuffled over onto Raiden. Some of them being:

>Rose. Look I know it's easy to bitch about the romance here but seriously. I get what they were trying but they really needed to make the relationship there more subtle. Ideally it'd be professional but with awkward moments of personal banter where we'd get true hints of how they feel about one another. What we got felt more like ham-handed melodrama in the middle of our action stealth game.

>the bosses... OK I know this is a kind of stupid gripe but really. Dead Cell needed at least 1 or 2 more members and for you to actually BEAT them. As is, Raiden only defeats/kills ONE and he was kind of the lame one out of the bunch. Fortune should've been a psychomantisesq villain who's untouchable until you manage to counter her bullshit luck. Vamp should've been a much later boss fight. Actually PROGRESSION should've been made. As was it just seemed like Raiden putzes about for 40 minutes as a bunch of shit goes on behind his back. Say what you will about this tying into him not trusting reality or whatever it wasn't exactly fun to play through.

>Some of these revelations come outta nowhere. Like Solidus saying he's murdered Raiden's parents or the whole crap about the Patriots. The reason the twist in MGS1 worked was cause there was some foreshadowing with the Darpa Chief and the death of Decoy Octopus. And the way the Colonel acts in MGS2 is enough of a reason to pull that crap about the AI later too, that works. But a lot of the game ties further into Raiden just feeling like he's putzing about while all of this shit goes on in the background. That can work in some instances but here? Not really.

>That ending was a SUPER anti-climatic cliffhanger.

Really, I think the pacing and characterization of MGS2 is all over the place. I get what they were going for, I just don't think they did a very good with it.

Anyone else feel that Raiden has shit luck and his family will go to hell. At no point in MGS2 is it hinted that Raiden wanted to rear a family.

Rose drops the news at a horrible time expecting Jack to just...care for no other reason and believe her after all her lies. Essentially John was born out of a string of long reaching lies and not because both parents wanted him. Well Rose wanted him, but expecting Jack to just go along with it makes her a selfish bitch.

Add in that in Rising Raiden works by traveling around the globe to make a living meaning he has no time to even think about his son and guide him and teach him values means he's bound to grow up fucked up.

I can't fault Raiden for that future fuck up, the disjointed and unbalanced family he has is all thanks to Rose's selfishness.

It wasn't so much that I hated Raiden, I just thought he was incredibly bland as a character. The way the game plays out it's the things around him and his passive responses that really drew my ire. That he couldn't tell Rose to shut up, that he really seemed to be a pawn in everything at all times, instead of a more free radical like Snake. I get that we were kind of supposed to look at Snake from the outside, as an observer, Raiden just ended up being such an observer in everything that it was hard to really care about him.

Thanks. On a side note, anyone else feel glad we're literally seeing this "War between Zero and Big Boss"? The way Metal Gear Solid 4 described it, it almost felt like a Cold War, essentially purely behind the scenes of civilization. So glad that there's real conflict and massacres between the two. And I hope they do a good job explaining and showing us on screen just how Zero, Sigint, and Paramedic deviated from their MGS3 selves. You can't just set all this up for nothing as it would only make the lazy writing of MGS4 seem lazier.

But that line of reasoning falls apart when you think that there were two OTHER clones of Big Boss that didn't sound exactly like him. Why does Solid Snake sound like him, but Liquid and Solidus do not?

Hell, the one who should have sounded the most like him, based on the skewed logic of cloning and it's interpretation in the series, would have been Solidus, who was the clone who hadn't had genomatic tomfoolery done with his DNA to favour any particular traits, unlike Liquid and Solid.

Eh, you've got a point there. I'm more well-versed in superhero cartoons than MGS, to be honest, and in cartoons usually everyone only has one clone if they have any. But I think Hayter's a good enough VA that he could pull it off.

More than likely, the guy in The Phantom Pain was either a new Big Boss clone (lol) or Chico (lol). TPP might be a precursor to the S3 program from Sons of Liberty.

I wanted to get into MGS a couple years ago (I don't have a PS3 or a working PSP, but I was planning on playing at least MGS, MGS2, and MGS3), and a friend who was really into the series told me not to bother caring about the plot at all, as Kojima was a troll and had written everything deliberately to confuse people who looked too far into the plot of things.

Was he right, and as someone who's never tried stealth games, are they doable gameplay-wise?

The overall plot of Metal Gear, while complicated, isn't really hard to understand, and the plot for each individual game is babbymode.

The KOJIMA2DEEP reputation started from idiots who skipped all the cutscenes in Sons of Liberty, got to the ending, and had no idea what happened.

Plus, in the Japanese release of the game, Sam is the only enemy to have red blood, all other cyborgs, Raiden included, have white. Raiden commenting on Sam's lack of enhancements was only in the American release where cyborgs had red blood. Presumably, the conversation with Doktor about how White Blood was phased out is also absent from the Japanese version.

Probably cause the whole "white blood" thing was seen as a bit skeevy.

I mean we know Raiden's popular with the ladies over there and while I'm pretty sure it wasn't meant to be that I think-

No wait I think it was meant to be that.

MGS3 wasn't brown and bloom. Half of that game had a green filter on everything. You fought in the jungle. The enemies had green uniforms. You had like, 8 kinds of green camo. Even the damned snow camo had green on it.

So I sat down and played Peace Walker this week, intent on finally getting somewhere with it.

I was sceptical as fuck at first, not really too keen on things broken up into tiny little A to B missions with a bunch of menus and loading screens in between, but I've come to absolutely love the game.

Managing Mother Base is really fun, and the Extra Ops missions are varied enough to keep me going through them all. If Ground Zeroes or MGSV can improve on any of this then hell yes.

My only gripe would be that the vehicle capture missions can get very stale very quickly, and even when you've got a team of four armed with Fulton-ammo Carl Gustavs it still takes fucking forever to do anything.

Anyone else grown to hate Big Boss? There's nothing great about this guy.

In MGS3 The Boss let him win, I don't care if he magically became better than The Boss at the end. He got his ass beaten FOUR freaking times by the same character.

In Portable Ops turns out he never even thought about his own ideals and was still mentally a low level grunt soldier and needed Gene to show him the idea of Outer Heaven. So now Big Boss is a plagiarist. In Peace Walker he also doesn't bother to regulate his group all that well since Miller is the one doing all the statistical work to finance and keep the damn unit functional by looking into ways to finance and pay the bills and even he needed to nag to Big Boss "Yo I can't do this alone, I need you actually act like a bloody leader and instruct our troops."

The more we learn about Big Boss the more I grow to hate him. His clones are superior characters. Doesn't help that he has the personality of a rock either and how he still behaves like a naive child by Peace Walker also annoys me like him still wanting to save Paz even though she highjacked his metal gear and tried to kill him with it. How he can't face reality makes me almost want to root for Zero, Sigint, and Paramedic to successfully kill him. Such a moron doesn't deserve to be praised.

Here's hoping that in Phantom Pain he stops acting like a retard. However if this guy doesn't find his balls by then, then to hell with him.

I think the point there was that he literally couldn't bring himself to beat the Boss. He held back until he finally couldn't anymore and allowed himself to surpass her.

Also you should never give a fuck about Portable Ops. Most of it is non-canon except the fact that something happened in San Heironymo that Miller isn't exactly fond of. It's also the only mainline MGS title not to be included in the 25th anniversary timeline for a damn reason.

I'm okay with anything that makes Gene a canon villain. It's one step closer to having John Slattery play him in the Metal Gear TV show that will never happen.

As a matter of fact, the only Metal Gear game with straight-up shit villains is Guns of the Patriots, but that only applies to the newly introduced ones. Liquid Ocelot was great.

I was just thinking, the Kid from the trailers, the one that's going to end up being a boss (The one that curses the world), there' always been something funny about him.

Then I realized he looks like a young Keifer Sutherland, almost. And he's blond. And he's wearing clothes with a bare chest.

Could it be young Liquid? Maybe. I dunno.

He's also got a necklace of jackal teeth (Liquid's quote about hunting jackals in the desert), is in the Middle East where Liquid was a POW, and seems to be around the right age given when Les Enfants Terribles was supposed to have started.

Seems like a pretty good bet they want us to think he's a young Liquid, even if it somehow turns out that he's not.
