This games selling point is multiple characters and to not even have a Smurfette is not a great plan.

Are both of you fucking kidding me or are you 15? Im not saying they have to be politically correct or any shit like that because you're right its still grand theft auto, but holy shit is it so much to ask for a major game franchise like Grand Theft Auto to have ONE of the THREE player characters be a woman? Not just to appeal to the female demographic (rememer: 30+% of gamers are women these days) but just to maybe mix it up a little from the usual white dudes (2/3rds of the cast) with short brown hair (all fucking three of them) and to give the game a point of view we've never seen before

I'm okay with minorities and women being in GTA games, as long as they're realistic about it. Let's face it; most GTA games are about rising up the ranks of a criminal organization, and most women simply do not have the cognitive abilities or upper body strength to do that. If they made a female protagonist in GTA, then the whole game would have to be about poking holes in condoms for child support money, or assaulting someone without fear of reprisal.

Having multiple protagonists from different backgrounds can be quite interesting in practice, though.

>Gypsy protagonist who robs people for drug money.
>Jewish protagonist that defrauds middle class investors and plots wars in the middle east for profit.
>Kenyan protagonist that rigs a major election.

Female career criminals are going to be much rarer. Traditionally, in organized crime, they're either semi-informed family, prostitutes, or low level pawns.

You never hear about Female Mafia dons or anything along those lines, and while GTA isn't as ingrained with that kind of gang mentality anymore, it still informs the narrative structure of the series.

I'm not saying I'm against more female characters or anything like that, I'm saying judging it because the mains aren't is jumping the gun. I want to see more of what they ARE giving us before I complain about what they COULD have given us.

That said, I am, as ever, up for scary Russian Mob lady if ever they should deign to give that a go.

Thats more what GTA used to be, then it decided to go all seriz bisinezz and 'realistic', which I feel was a bad move.
Thats why I now prefer the Saints Row games, which instead embraced the crazy (and hey as a bonus you can make your boss into whatever you want, instead of getting a choice of a couple of generic looking wankers)

It was kind of hilarious how a new head wanted to turn the SR series all serious like GTA4, he talked about how making the game 'mature' would make it as successful as games like Skyrim and basically went about deriding the main focus of the games.
He quickly had to eat his words when the fans responded about how stupid an idea that would be.
>> No. 165940
GTA hasn't been as good since Vice City so I'd be happy to go back to the all caricature thing if they want, but the niche is basically filled by Saint's Row. Red Dead Redemption proved Rockstar is capable of writing a serious story and doing so well, so uh, benefit of the doubt for now?

San Andreas was amazing. Vice City had more character (and better music) but I deffo loved Los Santos more for the sheer fucking size of it.
>> No. 165947
I don't know if this is true in San Andreas, but Vice City had a flying cars cheat. It turns out the cheat wasn't based on how fast a car moved, but the increase in its velocity. If you were to get in a tank and rotate the turret so it fired behind you, the tank would get a speed boost.

Because of this, the tank was the best car to use for the flying cars cheat.

That is why Vice City is the best.
>> No. 165948
>>165943
San Andreas is definitely my favorite GTA. I tried playing Vice City after playing it and I just couldn't get used to it, mostly because of the control. I want to like GTA IV, I really do, but it's terrible in comparison. And I'm sure it's good on its own, but as a sequel to San Andreas it fails in every aspect. The city was bland, it's too realistic, tons of features were removed, the characters were unlikable...there weren't even many cheats. San Andreas had CRAZY cheats. Activate flying cars and police chasing civilians, see cop car chases in SPAAAAACE. But all you get in GTA IV is spawning a heli. Lame.
>> No. 165949
I absolutely hated everything about San Andreas' style, especially compared to the glorious 80s pastiche madness that was Vice City. Actually I put it even lower than 4, which while not really a good game at least had a fair bit of funny physics shit (and I actually like Nico himself).
>> No. 165951
>>165947
Oh man, yes, the flying tank was the best. I remember I figured out the turret thing back when me and my older brother were still technically "way too young to be playing GTA."
We were disappointed that pulling back on the stick didn't make the tank fly (although hilariously enough, it does make any other car driving toward the tank suddenly take off, which made police chases AMAZING), and then suddenly, "Haha hey, what if we used the cannon like a booster?"
We weren't expecting it to actually work.
>> No. 165954
I liked San Andreas but it didn't have the lasting power GTAIII had for me. This is going to sound weird but I think the problem was that it was too big. There was just so much space, and no fun way to cross it quickly. Missions always had a really long 'getting there' phase at the start, much longer than in III, and if you failed you had to do that all over again. It got frustrating and once I'de beaten the main campaign I was pretty much done with the game.
>> No. 165960

I blame San Andreas being set in the early-to-mid '90s and having a black protagonist, who was less "psycho-swag crazy '80s lunatic" and more "whiny, urban gangbanger who less funny, more prick".

The first half of the '90s weren't very kind to black stereotypes, is what I'm saying. Not that they didn't have reason to be pissed off, but looking back, inner city swagger appears more delinquent and manchildish than badass.

This could have all been rectified by casting a Notorious B.I.G. clone as the protagonist, fuck the West Coast.

CJ's problem was the same as Niko's problem, in that Rockstar wanted to give both of them sympathetic stories... then dump them in sandbox games where they can kill dozens of innocents for shits and giggles. I have a hard time believing CJ cared about his friends and family when he could just mow down his neighbors with little consequence. Same with Niko's life as a traumatized soldier.

The reason Tommy Vercetti is such a great GTA protagonist is he's a gleeful madman in a world deserving of his violence. There wasn't a single person in Vice City worth compassion, unlike San Andreas or Liberty City, so there was no jarring realism to interfere with the inherent goofiness of a GTA game.
>> No. 165979
>>165978

I think CJ's was a little less dissonant, personally. But that's honestly going to be a real problem in any game where the opportunity for virtual cruelty is the main selling point.
>> No. 165984
>>165979
The worst part is where he turns around and kills some people just because that little jerkoff 'OG Loc' asks him to.
That isn't even a player controlled thing like when you beat one hundred random hookers to death for the lulz, thats all CJ.

Also the time he flips the fuck out and murders some dude by burying him alive for cat-calling his sister, hell its one thing to be protective of your sister but HOLY SHIT NIGGA!
>> No. 165986
>>165978
At least CJ was self aware of how ridiculous the world was around him. He's at a farm traveling with a redneck, and they're being chased by a police helicopter. The redneck guy points to the trunk of the car, and CJ finds a rocket launcher. The first thing he says? "Holy motherfuck." Part of the appeal of sandbox stories like that is seeing how the protagonist tries to play straight man in a rules-free wacky environment. San Andreas had the perfect mix of realism and wackiness. It may seem jarring to have wackiness restricted to gameplay and realism restricted to story and cutscenes, but really, I think that's how GTA should be. Besides, everything you mentioned is a non-canon gameplay element. If you count mowing down countless civilians and bringing in the army to take your ass down is a part of CJ's character, well...you shouldn't. We're talking about a world where you can do all that, then fling yourself off a building and hit the ground, only to walk out of a hospital 5 minutes later perfectly fine and everyone in the city, including cops, forgot all about you.

Not clicking. Part of the fun of video games is not knowing every thing about them when they come out. In GTA's case, there's probably a song or two that will be a pleasant surprise to hear for the first time.

If anyone cares about the storyline or anything else being spoiled, this is probably a good time to step off the internet (well, not entirely, but it's probably a good idea to avoid GTAV discussion). When it comes to things like radio being leaked, I don't see the point in listening right now. I'm reserving that for when I actually play the game.

I go looking for spoilers, partly because I still get the feeling of novelty from playing the game myself, and mostly because by the time I actually get around to playing said game it's been months if not a year or more since its release, sometimes by which I've forgotten the spoilers.

>That’s why I bristle at the idea that it’s “satire.” Satire requires at least a little bit of risk and subversion. When you’ve got a franchise that essentially created a genre, you’re not subverting anything anymore. Once you’ve spent twelve years showing the same strip clubs and lap-dance minigames and casual objectification of women, you’re not longer making fun of Western society’s culture of misogyny. You’re just reveling in it.

>And worse than that, you’re taking the coward’s way out by using the “satire” and “political incorrectness” claim to have it both ways. If anybody objects to the content, you can say “we’re making social commentary!” If anybody objects that there’s no real commentary being made, then you can say “stop taking it so seriously It’s just for laughs! Like on Top Gear! Why you gotta ruin all our fun?”

>An example I saw on a message board (since I still haven’t yet played the new game): calling the iPhone an “iFruit” isn’t satire. It barely registers as parody. But having your upper-middle-class career criminal using the iPhone equivalent, your street gangster using a version of Android, and your raging psychopath using Windows Phone: that’s approaching cleverness, and it’s almost satire.

>Taking pot shots at new age types and “liberals,” portraying women as shrill buzz-kills not worth much more than sex, that doesn’t offend me as a progressive. It offends me as somebody who’s often paid to write jokes for a living. It doesn't make you look like an iconoclast so much as a hack.

If you’re at all public as a developer, you’re going to get harassed or dismissed. Surrounded by some people who are creepily obsequious until they perceive you’ve wronged them somehow, at which point they’ll turn abusive. The best part is that the easiest place to fit a female into a group like the three protagonists of GTA V is as the "sextraction": the gal who uses her feminine wiles to distract guards or plays the damsel in distress to get guys to come in close. And Tumblr would complain just as much as her being in as not having a female at all.

we all know how this goes already, if you make a game with a male protagonist feminists bitch about it, and if you make a game with a female protagonist they don't buy it and then get mad that companies aren't catering to a market that doesn't give them money

Soooo... does Saints Row get any of these complaints? I'm asking this cause it's pretty close in terms of everything overall whereas other genres don't seem to get nearly as much attention on this front ie strategy, RPGs, etc.
