Except he was called so by mentor/family figure. For examples of characters who turned out to be called differently despite using other name for a long time, see Indiana Jones and Ben Kenobi :P
>Try to convince me that Chewbacca was the driving force behind the entire Star Wars saga.
Pffft, that's laughably easy. Without him, the Empire would never fall, and the Jedi would have been extinct.
EP3: Saves Yoda's life, gives him means to get off planet, means he later uses to go to Dagobah. If Yoda died, there would be no Jedi after EP4.
EP4: Thanks to meeting with Chewie, certain Han Solo was kicked out of the Academy. Exit one cold Imperial Officer, enter a smuggle with conscience. He was the one who agreed to take Obi Wan to his partner in Cantina. Later, he convinces Han to go back for Luke and to stop Vader in crucial moment.
No Chewie, Luke shot down, rebellion crushed.
EP5: Thanks to him repairing Millennium Falcon in time, Leia catches ride with Han. It's lucky, since Empire caught most of the fleeing transports. On Bespin, Chewie notices missing C3P0, alerting them to Lando's betrayal much earlier, then heroically fights to get Leia off Bespin.
No Chewie, Leia captured and turned to the dark side.
EP6: Infiltration of Jabba's Palace. No Chewie, heroes dead. Endor, he picks up dead animal, something others were reluctant to do, contacting them with Ewoks. No Chewie, they die outnumbered. Later, he captures AT-ST. Empire basically won the land battle, but Han manages to trick them using AT's comm system to open the door and come into ambush. No Chewie, generator stays unharmed.
End result - destruction of DS2, death of the Emperor, Return of the Jedi - all impossible without his efforts. Not even Luke can claim that much credit :P
I don't remember what he did in EU during EP 1 & 2, but I guess it was some serious shit, like diverting Trade Federation's attention in crucial moment with an angry holomail, or helping Obi Wan expose clone plot by mentioning assassin darts to Dax a few minutes earlier :>
