Eh with Hasbro things like that usually get spoiled hard with a toy release early. Since there is no toy noted at this time then good money would be no. Though they could always break "tradition" and make a show change without a toy first.

Actually, people have noticed that the new beast hunters optimus cg model has a lot of detail similarities to smokescreen. (I'd grab the pic, but I'm on my phone). So if Smokescreen becomes prime, he'd change to look like a huge beefy optimus, like the current optimus toy.

Let me ask you guys a question: who is your favorite Rescue Bot and why?

I've been babysitting some kids who just love the show, and they both insist that Heatwave is the unanimously popular one in their class and outside-of-school friends. However, I always thought Blades was the best one, cause he can fly and shit. So, what's the state of affairs here?

So, I'm just going to talk about the beast wars toyline for a while.

Basically, I have this thing where I want to collect one figure from every major North America Transformers line. While I'm currently only missing g2, rid, armada and energon, I also just like Beast Wars, So I've decided to view it as three separate lines for each major era of the toyline.

And now I'll break down my thoughts (NOTES: for non show characters I'm just going to say what animal they are, so as to avoid confusion. Also, I avoid giant sized figures, so I'm not considering dudes like transmetal 2 megatron)

YEAR ONE AND TWO: PLAIN ANIMALS
The beginning of the toyline is sort of rough, while you have gems like Optimus Primal, most of it hasn't aged well, with peicemetal animals and robots that have all of that animal hanging off of them, but the second year brought more refinement and you get guys like Inferno, who is fantastic even if his centre of balance is all fucked up. But the real winners are the year two basics, where they got rid of the line wide spring activated transformation and instead did figure specific spring gimmicks. The Earwig, the Squid, the Frog, they're almost all fantastic. So if you want a plain animal transformer, go for those. A bonus is that, with the exception of Airrazor, they're pretty cheap.
My pic: Clawjaw the squid

YEAR THREE: TRANSMETALS AND FUZORS
This is the part that fucked with me the most for quite a lot of reasons. First is that I never realized that the line was almost half fuzors (beast modes that are combos of two animals), due to the fact that ALL the small basic sized figures are fuzors. Second is that only show characters got Transmetals (all metal animals and robot modes with organic detail).
The fuzors look really strange but often cool, so I picked which fuzor I wanted and which transmetal I wanted, decided to buy them... and find out that both shatter with a light breeze. Transmetal Megatron and Torca (whale/elephant) both have a plastic defect which means the toy could break out of the package. Megatron has a japanese version that doesn't break, but costs a fortune and Torca got a repaint that is both rare and like, 200 bucks, so nope.
For Transmetals I ended up picking Terrorsaur and for Fuzors I ended up picking SkyShadow (lizard/dragonfly) But I haven't bought either yet, so take those with a grain of salt. Toys I know for a fact are good: Cheetor, Tarantulas, Silverbolt and Buzzclaw (praying mantis/lizard).

YEAR FOUR: TRANSMETAL 2
Another surprise was how many more Transmetal 2 there were than original transmetals. And these guys go odd. Which is actually great, they look like H. R. Geiger designs but with radical asymmetry. They look like no other toys. Downside: a lot of them weren't really built to manage all the small bits that the designs now have, so shit pops off everywhere. Another thing I liked was that, unlike Transmetals, some non-show toys from the original toyline got new versions (Shark, frog, frilled lizard) so if you want, they make for neat two-part collections. With this line, pretty much every toy is consistently odd, beautiful and covered in stuff that pops off, so there isn't many bad choices (except Cheetor, and Dinobot because he crashes into himself everywhere).
What I actually have IS a Cheetor, which sucks, and will probably be replaced, but some that I'd like to highlight as good are: the Stag Beetle, the Owl and the Ram.

YEAR FIVE: ...
Year five was just repaints and The Mutant line, which were toys that went from animal to animal. This line is very small, and was actually coming out while Beast Machines, the next major toyline already started. So while some look cool, I decided to skip them.

So basically, that's a fast breakdown of the toylines. Transformers fans are crazy, so their wiki is ridiculously expansive, including decriptions of every toy and either pictures, or links to pictures. So, if you find me full of shit you can judge for yourself without having to take my word for it. http://tfwiki.net/wiki/Beast_Wars:_Transformers_(toyline)

I may end talking about Beast Machines sometime, because I can write a novel about Beast Machines.

I had both Transmetal Megatron and Torca, and I recall something breaking only when Megatron got stepped on and one of his turbine things broke off. I've heard that he suffers from Gold Plastic Syndrome, though. Maybe a running change introduced a different type of plastic, explaining why mine didn't crumble. Or I was just super lucky.

Skyshadow was cool, based on what I remember. No hands, but a gimmick on each arm is just as good. Scarem, the stag beetle, looks awesome, but could be incredibly hard to stand up because his huge robot mode arms upset balance and his legs didn't bend well due to the joints in each insect leg facing away from each other.

Actually, turns out that Sky Shadow DOES have a hand (though it can't hold anything) But it was forever until I actually found this out, since I guess the instructions never said anything about it. (the toy pictured is Beast Wars Neo Drancron, but the mold is the exact same)

Thanks for the insights though! Well appreciated.

The predacon is a fucking beast (pun intended). I'm glad Ultra Magnus is Optimus Prime's subordinate rather than his boss like in TFA. It looks like Smokescreen is hand picked to be the new Prime... not sure how much I like that. Kid's still a real newbie, hasn't had much time to integrate himself with the team, and I foresee Ultra Magnus being very, very mad he got passed over for promotion.

I would have been way happier with the Predacons if Shockwave either already had most/all of them ready... or if they had turned out to be connected to Unicron (because, hey does anyone remember that Unicron is the Earth on this show? Because I'm not sure the writers do)

Kind of disappointed BH Smokescreen wasn't released in his BH colours, I have way too many white car transformers at this point. Although I do think the designs/colour balance were a bit better on the white scheme.

I'm curious. It seems like some of the Transformers work only if you make one of their shapes iconic and sort of make believe in the alt-mode. Whether that mode is designated as the transformed state or the man shape in mind seems to depend on the character.

Is there a legitimate science or something that goes into designing a good looking man and alt shape transformer to work in both modes, or do they pretty much just wing it and slap something together? I get there's only so much you can do with something geometrically, but...

I am legit impressed with how Beast Hunters is going. The opening 4 parter was terrible, but it was terrible in the normal Prime way of being a clusterfuck of plot points while still being boring and then wrapping up everything last minute in an unsatisfying way. But the last 4 eps? Great.

Properly paced, actually funny with really sharp visuals. But the real kingmaker is that they're not trying to run the narrative over a wrote larger than life, Lord of the Rings style that they can never live up to.

Oh, and less TFTM quotes thankfully. I don't even mind that they've been replaced by hamfisted toy-lin name drops.

I'm at the part where Starscream is using, what I realized to be, and absolutely gigantic scooter to get around since he can't transform. It is my the best thing ever.

By the way, I'm really glad this series keeps up the proud tradition of inconsistent scaling and magical spatial shifting.

Also, at first I was little put off by how religous both Prime and Megatron are, but now I kind of dig their magic-space-robot Christianity/Judaism. I guess it's more Space-Old-Judaism, since Prime is obviously Robo-Jesus.

For a show I was happy with ignoring a year ago that's a big deal.

I liked the finale if you hadn't guessed. And hey, we still have a 90 minute movie left. But Yeah, This show suddenly got fantastic and 80% of that was them figuring out how to make the best choreographed animated fights and weave them seamlessly into the flow of an episode and 20% character humor.

Though a new younger viewer TF series (like Rescue Bots) will be coming out in 2014 when Rescue Bots finishes and will have much of the same team. Which is coincidentally, also much of the Prime team.

New interview with Roberto Orci on the Next Transformers Animated Series

"It’s not really a reboot, it’s sort of a continuation of it [Transformers Prime] in a tonally different form. We want to make sure we’re servicing the right audiences. We got to do a very adult version of Transformers that you just saw in this cartoon, a very sophisticated one, and we also want to make sure we don’t leave other kids behind, who love Transformers too and don’t want to be as scared as Transformers Prime could make you, that kind of thing. So we’re going to have a good parallel series that is connected, but it’s a little more friendly to the family."

You know what? I apologize for how I started this conversation. I spoke in absolutes, and actively antagonized others by thrusting my controversial opinion as fact. I just don't want to have those kind of conversations any more, hence my highly minimized posting on this board.

So, I'll lay it out there, I love Beast Machines. Like, a lot.

Not that I don't get the anger towards it. From 12-19ish I could only perceive it through a red haze bordered by confusion. Then I did a college re-watch. It may have just been how you think at that age, trying to look for more in anything whilst still having the last throws of the teenage compulsion to just throw all of yourself into a piece of media, but I came out adoring it.

The main thing that grabbed early 20's me about it was the strong themes, of which Beast Machines has a few of, but primarily the themes of Religion and Going Too Far. When you boil it down to the core that's front and centre, you have the story of a man who literally finds god, converts his reluctant followers, uses his faith to justify his hatred of his old enemy and through that hatred almost commits genocide against his own people, dying in the process. God then resurrects him, knowing he learned his lesson and so the man passes on leadership to his disciple. Finally in order to let the world move on from his mistakes, he sacrifices both himself and his enemy for a new world to be able to thrive.

That was a strong enough hook to keep me in. But even beyond that you had characters dealing with everything they knew being gone and the fact that they're partly to blame.

And Thrust. Thrust is actually one of my favorite fictional characters.

But that was as a man in my early 20's. I'm slowly going through it in chunks now as a man in my mid 20's and it definitely seems different. The themes are definitely still there, but don't knock me down as huge and unexpected anymore, though probably just because I expect them now. But more than that, the repetition of arguments and episode plots is no longer charming, characters either doing nothing at all (Blackarachnia for all but 2 episodes), or only being there to handwave plot elements (Botanica) now annoys me.

Though while older me sees more flaws in the story, there's something I've come to love even more with this viewing. The designs.
The maximals are this odd blur of animal parts and machinery, but not in a mashed together way like the Transmetal 2's were, but instead with this symmetry and flow that makes them look kind of "wrong" yet still beautiful. They feel like art to me, for lack of a less incendiary word.
Not to say I don't like the Vehicons just as much. They don't look like robot people, they look like anthropomorphic tools. I love the faces in both modes.

And Thrust, he became even more interesting to me the more I thought about it.

Now for the elephant in the room: Being a bad sequel. It changes certain characters without explanation and takes others down paths some people just don't want to see them go down. I found my way past them, my own personal excuses. You don't need to share mine, or even make any of your own.
On the early 20's rewatch I was in my hayday of reading comics. Some of you may even have known me since that point. Comics, especially superhero comics were what I lived and breathed. So after a week of blowing down say, All of Green Arrow up till that point, starting a series where established characters suddenly acted different under a new pen seemed par for the course, I just thought that was how anything serial ended up.
On the mid 20's rewatch, I had just finished watching Beast Wars too. Season three of Beast Wars also made some sudden and unexplained character changes, and also I just didn't like it that much. It felt like a sharp dive off the mountain that Season 2 just built. So I shrugged the Beast Machines changes off with a shrug of "Meet the new boss...".

If anyone actually gets through this monster and still wants to talk about Beast Machines, I have a ton more to say about it.

If not, I have plenty of other controversial Transformers opinions to argue about like:

-I like the movie designs (but obviously not the movies themselves)
-Beast Wars and Prime are incredibly similar both in terms of structure and overall (As in spread out over ALL the episodes) quality. (But obviously not in tone.)
-I enjoyed Costa and Coller's Ironhide more than Last Stand of the Wreckers
-I don't think More Than Meets the Eye is the second coming of Jesus Christ, despite being mostly enjoyable.

I'd care, but I just got back from someone who said Transformers: Armada was the best Transformers (and they genuinely believed Armada Starscream, Megatron, and Optimus Prime were the best interpretations of the character), so I can accept there are people who will defend to the death even the most shit transformer franchises, and will never be dissuaded. I mean, to me it seems like saying "The Tiger Gamecom was the greatest handheld device!" but I can take solace in the fact that the majority of people can see these shows for how terrible they were.

That's why I tried to change the language of what I was saying. I didn't even dismiss others reasoning in disliking the series.

I would honestly like to hear your full opinions on it, and have a discussion. But if not, post another transformers related topic and we can switch gears to that instead.

As for armada, I never watched the unicorn trilogy because I have so many anime series recommended to me that I need to watch, so why would I start with the ones with not very good reputations?
>> No. 216332
I got a HUGE soft spot for Armada, it being the first Transformers show I could follow on the air and buy the toys for. (minicons 4 ever!)

But that dont mean that I can defend its major flaws that when I think about it is sort of the same ones as the first season of Sailor Moon.

Its formulaic, has annoying characters, repeat animation all the fucking time, stupid plots and yet has enough good/badass/shit gets real moments that you want to keep watching and in the end is rewarded by one of the best Prime Megatron fights ever.

And unlike Salior Moon, this did not get better, it got worse, way worse!
But Energon is a rant for an other time.

Mostly Coller's layouts. It was a big action-first comic with a storytelling style that felt like an update to Wildstorm's "widescreen comics" of the early 2000's and the story while super slight offered enough of a clever foundation to not get bored while you look at the pretty fight.

It's TOTALLY not worth 3.99 an issue, not even kind of, given the fact that you can blow through an issue in three minutes.

Last Stand of the Wreckers was the same dirty dozen/suicide squad story I've seen a thousand time in comics specifically done with huge, cumbersome blocks of exposition. I actually do see it's positives and get why Transformers people specifically like it, but for someone who has read so many comics, it felt like an average x-men story.

And finally where the fuck was Blast Off in all this?
That awesome scene where Cosmo disarms a fucking nuke in SPACE would have (maybe) been even better with a battle.
But no.
Guess that my big problem with "the ongoing", I and other readers kept getting better ideas then what happend.

Well, I think Beast Machines, is... okay, I mean it's pretty nice to see Techno VS Organic life, it's gives you a good story while also having an enviromental message in it, it's like Captain Planet or Blinky Bill,

but still, most of the transformers are (especially in the maximals robot forms, hell they don't even look like the way they transform in the toys), the idea of believing in yourself to transform is a little too, & too the truth, Optimus Primal was mostly a Anti-Techno Guru for most of the series, & uh... between you and me... I wanted Waspinator to join the Maximals...

Oh man the mask alone takes Drift to whole new levels of weeaboo. I bet he'll talk with an ambiguous Asian accent and upset all sorts of people. At least his deluxe toy seems decent. Kinda iffy on those dinobots but they seem cool.

I've heard he's going to speak straight up mandarin.
But what does the moonbase 2 know anyway.

One Transformer IS confirmed to speak totally in mandarin. We don't know if it's Drift or not. It could be Crosshairs, the new robot with a trenchcoat made of car parts that looks like he's straight out of a John Woo movie.

Anyway, Toy fair happened, so here's EVERYTHING:

Well it clearly can't be Drift speaking Mandarin since he's a samurai and all. But god, Crosshairs deeply appeals to my stupid inner child's stupid tastes. High powered sports car alt mode. Garish eye catching colors. Magnificent bastard smirk sculpted right into his face. Duel wields SMGs. Big ass trenchcoat even though he's a goddamn robot. He's even got night vision goggles for night jigglin'!

Question: are the Transformers Animated IDW comics strictly a rehash of events on the show, or do they cover new ground? I've never read them, and lately I'm pining for more TFA again.

Both but more of the second one.
It just the first arc is a retelling to set up the scen.
Good retelling though.

Thank you, good to know! I'll have to look those up then. On a related note, now that we're into the world of 1080p HD, I hope a release of the show in that quality comes out eventually.

He's like this in every close up. Holy shit.

At least there weren't any highly uncomfortable Transformer biopsy/autopsy scenes. Been watching the actual X-Files lately and there are twinklings of the gory body investigations trend that became popular in later procedural crime dramas. I don't think I could handle that even if it's happening to robots.
