I'm new to the fandom, so I don't know much about the cosplay side of it, but maybe this would be an appropriate time to ask: how does the fandom take to white cosplayers? Does it depend on the character?

It really depends on the fan. Most people are okay with people of any race, ethnicity, skin colour yadda yadda cosplaying since it is after all, just playing. I'm sure there are some out there who get all bent outta shape that a white gal wants to dress up as Korra, but they're getting mad about nothing.
Do keep in mind that when it comes something like, oh I dunno, the casting for a major motion picture based on the series, Asian and Native (Inuit or Yupik, for example) actors should be cast in these roles. It is a pan-Asian fantasy world, after all.

I think it depends on the character, and where/when you do it. A few years ago, I did Katara cosplay and didn't get much/any real griping--but my then-girlfriend, who's also white, got some flak for cosplaying Sokka. I had some people at AX telling me I "should've tanned" for the costume, too. But it was before the movie came out. I think people've gotten more critical of that kind of thing since then--my ex only got flak after the cast for that got announced. (By then, I was cosplaying Bounty Hunter June, and nobody seemed to care.)

Movies are different and should be different. You (generally speaking) only get one shot with a movie. It's less about using one's imagination than plays or costumes in general are. What's cool for cosplay, or even for people putting on plays, is not cool for a movie.

A-kon made for a decent weekend, and this family made my Saturday.

(The mom was A:TLA!Katara but she wasn't in the photo. Bolin and Mako were just were just getting sandwiches. It was some Vietnamese sub sandwich fusion cuisine. I like to pretend the Airbenders got the tofu sub, not the chicken or pork ones.)

Like, there's such a stigma against crossplaying female characters because most of the guys do it as a joke and don't put any effort into their costumes. Fat bearded Asami with a costume that is falling apart isn't actually funny, jsyk. It's just bad and kind of stupid.

In general it's harder for guys to crossplay because they have the unfortunate problem of growing five-o-clock shadows after a day at a con, a lot of female designs show a lot of leg/skin in general (and you might not want to shave it all off), and IN GENERAL most dudes don't know how to sew. A better option is to go as a genderbent version, and if you can't sew or design get a friend to help. Whatever you do put some time and effort into your costume please.
