It was great. Really liked that they got into war-profiteering. It's the kinda slightly-dodgy not-really-good thing everyone was wanting LoK to delve into a little more. Should be nice to see the outcome.

Plus, Mako was totally right to tell the president.

Mako really jerkbent his way out of a relationship, again.

I liked that Eska had to be told not to kill Korra by her dad.

Also, while I liked the episode a lot as a whole, the Tenzin and family subplot somehow...didn't mesh as well here? They've always felt like they could have been episodes on their own rather than be in the middle of the main plot, but it stuck out like a sore thumb here. Likely will carry some significance later on (Meelo's totally going to send those lemurs on someone), but still.
>> No. 114698
Probably my favorite episode thus far. Is it just me, or did about twice as much happen in this episode compared to previous episodes? It felt like we were always moving and every scene was relevant to the main plot in some way. It was good.

Codfish that I am, I can't help but focus on the few gripes I had. First off, are the Aangs going to be relevant to the main plot anytime soon? The Air Temple scenes were the filleriest of filler (although I did chuckle at Meelo's demonstration).

Also, did Mako and Korra have to break up now? It feels like we haven't gotten any time to actually see their relationship develop that much. It's gotten a nod in almost every episode, but they just haven't done anything that makes me think of them as a "couple." I think they should have spent more time getting us used to them being together before they drove this wedge of duty between them, or they just shouldn't have done it at all because some relationships actually become more interesting when they just commit to it. Then again, if this really is such a big issue with them, it's probably for the best that they broke up early like they did. Doesn't make for very good TV though.

One last gripe: I would have liked the 2v1 fight at the end to have gone on a bit longer. Three master waterbenders in the open ocean? That's just begging for an extended, high-speed fight scene.

On the plus side, the plot is moving, and moving fast. Many of the main characters are not where they were at the start of the episode, which is great. I like that we actually see Mako being a competent cop in all aspects of the job and not just by crashing cars (and, may I just say, looking mighty spiff in that trench coat). Bolin and Varrick had some good funny moments, and we get to look at Ginger some more! Lin is still gruff and awesome! Asami is... uh, still here. We might see Zuko's daughter soon! And that cliffhanger ending!

Overall, really good episode.

Tenzin's arc here is totally a parallel to his relationship with Korra and her upbringing. His under-the-breath criticism of Meelo trying to train Pokey can be half-aimed at his own lessons with Korra. Also, right now he's isolated up in the Southern Air Temple while the world is going to hell in a handbasket, blissfully unaware of what's happening. Just like Korra in the White Lotus compound. He's gonna be in for a shock.

They're both right. The SWT is going to be destroyed without help, and who knows what Unalaq will do once he's in power -- he could even take advantage of the chaos to kill Tonraq, or use him and Senna as hostages to control Korra. It's surprising a lot of people don't seem to get why Korra is acting this way -- even though she says it in the episode herself: her family and tribe's safety is at stake. Of course, this doesn't mean Korra's plan of sneaking the armada to the South Pole is right, but she's obviously in a really tense situation. It seems like her paranoia is going off the charts after the whole thing with Unalaq too, which definitely isn't helping things.

And on Mako's end, he really can't just bend over and ignore this sort of thing. Sneaking the fucking united forces to another country and conveniently getting them involved in a war can have some really nasty repercussions, especially... considering Korra this season doesn't have a track record of making good decisions. Of course, there's a difference between giving Korra room to make her own decisions and picking herself back up and letting her steal a country's naval system.

Eh, they're both pretty good jerkbenders this episode. Understandable jerkbenders when you look at where they're coming from. Mako's trying to be a good cop and look out for his City. Korra's trying to desperately rustle up some reinforcements to save her tribe and her family.

You know, I disagreed with that whole "You need to set aside personal attachments" thing that Aang was confronted with at the end of his Book 2, so this kind of makes for a nice symmetry of the other extreme. Korra's so concerned with her family and how the stuff affects her life personally that she's lost all objectivity.

It's perfectly understandable, but still the other extreme.

The fights are suffering from the animation, and the new directors are less experienced than Joaquim Dos Santos (he probably directed the incoming Studio Mir episodes).
I liked how Korra was getting the upper hand against the twins and summoned that huge water tornado without even entering the avatar state.

Overall, I really enjoyed this episode, and felt that it was the strongest of Season 2 so far. All the characters felt like they had something to do. Mako AND Bolin both got character development, Republic City got some worldbuilding, and the fans finally got the morally grey antagonist they've been insisting Unalaq is -- in President Raiko aka Tom Selleck. While he's up against the heroes, he's got very valid reasons for doing what he's done. And I loved Mako and Lin living out 80s cop movie cliches, and then Lin bro'ing out over breakups.

Also, the best bit had to be when Bolin discovers the secrets of politics. I don't have a transcript, but it was basically, "Whenever I lose the crowd, I just say buzzwords and they start cheering!"

>>114698
>Is it just me, or did about twice as much happen in this episode compared to previous episodes? It felt like we were always moving and every scene was relevant to the main plot in some way. It was good.

That's because all the subplots (bar Tenzin's) fed back into a single main plot: trying to whip the URN into a war against the North. Because they were all talking about the same thing, and branched off each other only to merge back into the main trunk in different ways, the overall episode was strengthened. The pace zips along because of that, as every character feels like they're contributing.

What Korra did was totally uncalled for, but that doesn’t mean that Mako had to break it off with her at that very moment. Now Korra, in her emotional state, is going to pretend to be with Bolin to spite Mako, and that’s going to give Eska even more of a reason to kill them both.

Anyway, am I the only one who noticed that Mako’s name was pronounced as “meɪ·koʊ” instead of the usual “mɑ·koʊ”?
>> No. 114723
As another person who was less than enthusiastic with the show so far, I fucking loved this episode.

Mako developing more of a personality than supportive boyfriend! Even if he did kinda rat out his girlfriend and doom the SWT, he totally wants to be a "super cop" and that's great!

Bolin floundering to find his place, but kind of finding it? More than just an idiot this time around! He's an idiot with a character arc!

Asami doing something actually important! Even if that only lasted for less than 2 minutes total screen time!

Korra being crazy, but in an actually justifiable way! She is either on her way to growing up and calming down or becoming the Dirty Harry of Avatars! Either option would be awesome!

Tenzin's bits were forced. Like everyone else said, they didn't mesh well with the rest of the episode. And pretty much right away, you understand the message they're trying to get across, so having to watch through it is a chore and distraction compared to everything else in the episode. Not that the Tenzin bits took up a lot of time, but it felt like wasted time when they did show up because I already knew what they wanted to say.

Actually, coming back to it, it's not actually Asami doing something, it's just her providing for another person's idea, the same way she has been this whole series. She really hasn't had a single novel thought of her own so far, she's just been the gang's car throughout the series.

Varrick as the genius mad scientist seems to be taking all the moments that Asami otherwise would have had. He can pretty much do all she can except he has a WACKY personality.

And he's probably the secondary bad guy and is gonna try to blow up the spirit portals

As this episode shows that Unalaq isn't evil and that Korra isn't good it's possible that Bryke are trying to add more depth to the characters. It will be interesting to see whether the Agnai Kai were paid by one side to make the other look bad or whether it was a coincidence.

I was surprised that there was so many people from the North and South Water Tribes in Republic City given that it was originally composed of Fire Nation and Earth Kingdom people, is nowhere near the north or south pole, and both Water Tribes have very small populations (especially the South due to the devastation caused by the war).

Happy that Eska and Denske will are going to start playing a large role in the plot. I wonder if they'll inflame tensions in Republic City?

Also happy that we may see what's happened to the Fire Nation since ATLA.

Not really sure what purpose the Tenzin side stories have. They're nice but if they're not related to the plot then you may as well cover them in one of the comics.

If my significant other barges into my workplace and KICKS MY DESK OVER, I am going to break up with them. Korra is acting like a complete psycho, and everything Mako did was completely justified. She's being irrational and getting shitty advice from Varrick. You do not just SCOOP UP A NATION'S ARMY and use it for your own ends, even if you DO desperately need help. You go through fucking official channels.

Luckily, she's heading to the Fire Nation, who will probably help out. I've also seen some interesting comments drawing parallels between Korra and Zuko suggesting that Zuko will be her Iroh, and help her calm down and think things through. How cool would that be?!

It looks like there's some police corruption going on. I wonder if Varrick paid them off?

As for the Makorra thing, the best way to handle it for both the show and the fans would be to have them get back on friendly terms but remain broken up. It's how teen romances usually go anyway.

Man, that isn't happening, especially since Korra's basically going to be reported as missing when they don't hear from the Fire Nation and the last time Mako saw her he broke up with her. And as Bryan has said, they're made for each other -- they're going to get back together, it's obvious.

Sadly, this is very true.

Still boggles the mind why they made that statement if they're going to frontload the story with all this drama.
I mean, I know it's basically a given, but it kills the last bit of intrigue the couple has. Just watching them go through the motions of relationship issues 101 is not really stimulating television.

Because even if two people are meant for each other it doesn't mean they aren't going to have problems. Given how delicate this fandom is, I wonder how it would react if it was revealed Kataang had a nasty fight and broke up once too.

That's a scary thought, buddy.

In all honesty, since there's not a single person on the internet who seems to be invested in this couple, it might have given me a warped perspective on things. Still, I kinda doubt the intended audience will find these tidbits anything but intrusive.

that is just an assumption and more than likely a widely held one since they've never really give clear indicators to time passage unless its dialog. More plausible they took their own ship soon after Korra left judging from Eska being in full wedding attire when they met their father and jumped on the skis when they saw Korra heading out of port and likely they are returning to Republic City rather than the SWT. As for Korra she hopped on the quickest transport out of the city and that just happened to by a speedy and to get to the outlying islands of the Fire nation it isn't that far from Republic city say about a few days and from there she could hop an airship to get a lift to the capital.

I hope Eska and Desna starts spy/stalking Bolin and the others around the city doing the whole retro spy cliche bit.

Are you kidding me? I'd LOVE to see that! Why? Because it's realistic. Most fictional alpha couples are the types that meet when they're young and stay together forever. This sort of thing doesn't happen too often in real life (not saying that it doesn't happen at all) and it's certainly part of the fantasy. But it's refreshing to see an alpha couple break up because of the very realistic challenges of maintaining a career and being on opposite sides of an issue. The believability of it makes it that much more interesting to watch.

Nice to see all of you completely forgot that Korra tried Unalaq's little magic spirit water trick. In fact, I'm surprised more people haven't mentioned it. I was wondering if the Avatar State itself knew how and was attempting to do it or if Korra was trying to imitate her uncle but couldn't quite get it right.

The Avatar State SHOULD know how to do it or something better, since it has the combined knowledge of all Avatars... I kinda doubt none of them knew how to deal with unruly spirits

>the entire idea that benders persecute non-benders has been dropped and will never be resolved

Well maybe they could have gotten somewhere if Amon and the movement actually had some valid points besides, "bloo bloo benders can hurt non-benders", which doesn't take a terrorist movement to point out or at least a solid goal that didn't involve wiping out an entire group of people.

Let's be real, if there WAS non-bender oppression on a wide scale (there wasn't) that was so bad that it called for change (and it's ridiculous because the rest of LOK would basically be about Korra traveling the world with her masked terrorist buddy so she could hold everyone's hands and tell them to check their privilege, never mind how messed up that would be coming from a bender and therefore part of the oppressing class) the Equalists would NOT have done the non-benders any favors.

And like others have pointed out, the council was disbanded and a president was elected as a result of the movement, though I'm more inclined to believe it was more because they realized it was an outdated and ineffective way of governing than it was about "omg, delicate non-benders need representation too!" because seriously, all they would have needed to do is have some bender council members step down and put in a few non-benders.

BASICALLY, it was dropped because the only legs the Equalists had to stand on were Amon and his charisma and Hiroshi and his money and they were both horribly shattered with a sledgehammer. And the fact that, you know, there is not an epidemic of non-bender oppression going on though I wouldn't have been surprised to hear there was in the months following the end of book 1, THANKS to the Equalists. Good job, guys.

The only evidence anyone can ever seem to bring up that nonbenders are horribly oppressed and live every day crushed under the heel of those dirty benders is that the Equalists exist so it must be true!

Just like how Stormfront proves whites are being oppressed

Personally, I'm just justifying the new and never before mentioned president is the direct result of the Equalist movement, with the President being instated to ensure that the Republic's people actually have a say in their government and thus reduce the likelihood of another violent revolution.

They made a sport some people couldn't participate in due to their lack of ability thereby oppressing them because that word has lost any and all meaning to Americans and other peoples of the first world since world war II and the civil rights movement and gets applied to anything that might remind men that they're valuable for something.

I think that was actually the case, somewhere (either a writer QnA or that trivia thing on the Nick website) they said Tenzin realised that the current ruling council wasn't exactly representative of the people of the city, so they held democratic elections for the first time. Which lead to a nonbending president being elected.

Make of this what you will.
>> No. 114888

Well, Varrick sort of implied in the last episode the election was bought. Republic City can't win, man.

I took the "unfair representation" bit as the city is becoming so blended there is no longer segregated populations that need representation, personally. Like who on the council was supposed to represent people like Mako and Bolin?

Sounds like....Rava? Rama? The 2spooky reverb is making it hard to decipher. New theory, Korra is asking about the Avatar Spirit and that's its name, or more precisely HER name.
>> No. 114905
>>114904
Rava seems like some kind of food from India. Rama is a figure in Hinduism, an Avatar of Vishnu.

If it is Rama I guess it's about time they actually started getting to the Hindu side of the Avatar mythos, and I guess it's a bit more subtle than just calling whoever Korra's looking for 'Vishnu'.

>Along with Krishna, the eighth avatar of Vishnu, Rama is considered to be the most important avatar of Vishnu. He is also one of the most popular gods in Hinduism and is widely worshipped throughout Nepal and India. In a few Rama-centric sects, Rama is considered the Supreme Being, rather than an avatar.
>> No. 114906
well it looks like we'll be getting some definite answers to the reasons for the avatar being who they are and their purpose instead of everyone attempting to shoehorn some shit that's not been stated but just "implied" by the one they've seen before Korra.

I don't think he'll necessarily be a bad guy (or else a running trend with LOK is going to be the leaders of republic city being constantly replaced) but I think to an extent he might be corrupt. It depends on if he genuinely feels it isn't RC's place to get involved in the war or if say, someone who would benefit from the war lasting so long is paying him to stay out of it.

I'm afraid Pierrot can't take much credit for most of those screenshots. The backgrounds are produced in Burbank.

Pierrot's been pretty ok so far. The biggest issues in their episodes are main characters rarely blinking during dialog scenes, their tweens in action scenes, and their tendency to draw background characters sloppy. It'll be nice to have Mir back.

I like Varrick, but he does seem to be telegraphing that he's manipulating Bolin for his own ends right? Or does he have such a forceful personality than Bolin just gets swept along with him?

Well, I was just grabbing some of the best scenes off the top of my head, but there's more than that. Still, I agree with you, Mir is definitely the better of the two over all.
>> No. 114942

Varrick is a wild card. He can wind up the eccentric Water Tribe Richie Rich he's been portraying or he can pull a wicked diabolical heel turn. If anything he's spot on about Bolin being a charismatic, muscly, cheesy mouthpiece that people just eat up.

>>114938

I didn't mean to downplay the awesome visuals you posted. Sorry about that. FWIW, the only public criticism shared by anyone in the production about Pierrot's work was that Korra was waifu-skinny during the scene in the premiere where she tries Golden Shower Bending for the first time.
>> No. 114943

I think Bolin is just swept up in it and there's nothing inherently special that drew Varrick to him. I mean, not to downplay Bolin or anything but I really can't think of what Varrick could gain from manipulating him outside of getting to be in on the Avatar's circle.

At this point, I'd say it's a mixture of the two. Bolin gives Varric leverage against Mako, who until they're break up, would have been a kind of leverage against Korra. Bolin just so happens to be relatively easy to string along, since he's not one to look at a gift with suspicion.
