It was great. Really liked that they got into war-profiteering. It's the kinda slightly-dodgy not-really-good thing everyone was wanting LoK to delve into a little more. Should be nice to see the outcome.

Probably my favorite episode thus far. Is it just me, or did about twice as much happen in this episode compared to previous episodes? It felt like we were always moving and every scene was relevant to the main plot in some way. It was good.

Codfish that I am, I can't help but focus on the few gripes I had. First off, are the Aangs going to be relevant to the main plot anytime soon? The Air Temple scenes were the filleriest of filler (although I did chuckle at Meelo's demonstration).

Also, did Mako and Korra have to break up now? It feels like we haven't gotten any time to actually see their relationship develop that much. It's gotten a nod in almost every episode, but they just haven't done anything that makes me think of them as a "couple." I think they should have spent more time getting us used to them being together before they drove this wedge of duty between them, or they just shouldn't have done it at all because some relationships actually become more interesting when they just commit to it. Then again, if this really is such a big issue with them, it's probably for the best that they broke up early like they did. Doesn't make for very good TV though.

One last gripe: I would have liked the 2v1 fight at the end to have gone on a bit longer. Three master waterbenders in the open ocean? That's just begging for an extended, high-speed fight scene.

On the plus side, the plot is moving, and moving fast. Many of the main characters are not where they were at the start of the episode, which is great. I like that we actually see Mako being a competent cop in all aspects of the job and not just by crashing cars (and, may I just say, looking mighty spiff in that trench coat). Bolin and Varrick had some good funny moments, and we get to look at Ginger some more! Lin is still gruff and awesome! Asami is... uh, still here. We might see Zuko's daughter soon! And that cliffhanger ending!

Overall, really good episode.

Tenzin's arc here is totally a parallel to his relationship with Korra and her upbringing. His under-the-breath criticism of Meelo trying to train Pokey can be half-aimed at his own lessons with Korra. Also, right now he's isolated up in the Southern Air Temple while the world is going to hell in a handbasket, blissfully unaware of what's happening. Just like Korra in the White Lotus compound. He's gonna be in for a shock.

They're both right. The SWT is going to be destroyed without help, and who knows what Unalaq will do once he's in power -- he could even take advantage of the chaos to kill Tonraq, or use him and Senna as hostages to control Korra. It's surprising a lot of people don't seem to get why Korra is acting this way -- even though she says it in the episode herself: her family and tribe's safety is at stake. Of course, this doesn't mean Korra's plan of sneaking the armada to the South Pole is right, but she's obviously in a really tense situation. It seems like her paranoia is going off the charts after the whole thing with Unalaq too, which definitely isn't helping things.

And on Mako's end, he really can't just bend over and ignore this sort of thing. Sneaking the fucking united forces to another country and conveniently getting them involved in a war can have some really nasty repercussions, especially... considering Korra this season doesn't have a track record of making good decisions. Of course, there's a difference between giving Korra room to make her own decisions and picking herself back up and letting her steal a country's naval system.

You know, I disagreed with that whole "You need to set aside personal attachments" thing that Aang was confronted with at the end of his Book 2, so this kind of makes for a nice symmetry of the other extreme. Korra's so concerned with her family and how the stuff affects her life personally that she's lost all objectivity.

Overall, I really enjoyed this episode, and felt that it was the strongest of Season 2 so far. All the characters felt like they had something to do. Mako AND Bolin both got character development, Republic City got some worldbuilding, and the fans finally got the morally grey antagonist they've been insisting Unalaq is -- in President Raiko aka Tom Selleck. While he's up against the heroes, he's got very valid reasons for doing what he's done. And I loved Mako and Lin living out 80s cop movie cliches, and then Lin bro'ing out over breakups.

Also, the best bit had to be when Bolin discovers the secrets of politics. I don't have a transcript, but it was basically, "Whenever I lose the crowd, I just say buzzwords and they start cheering!"

That's because all the subplots (bar Tenzin's) fed back into a single main plot: trying to whip the URN into a war against the North. Because they were all talking about the same thing, and branched off each other only to merge back into the main trunk in different ways, the overall episode was strengthened. The pace zips along because of that, as every character feels like they're contributing.

Tenzin's bits were forced. Like everyone else said, they didn't mesh well with the rest of the episode. And pretty much right away, you understand the message they're trying to get across, so having to watch through it is a chore and distraction compared to everything else in the episode. Not that the Tenzin bits took up a lot of time, but it felt like wasted time when they did show up because I already knew what they wanted to say.

Actually, coming back to it, it's not actually Asami doing something, it's just her providing for another person's idea, the same way she has been this whole series. She really hasn't had a single novel thought of her own so far, she's just been the gang's car throughout the series.

Varrick as the genius mad scientist seems to be taking all the moments that Asami otherwise would have had. He can pretty much do all she can except he has a WACKY personality.

And he's probably the secondary bad guy and is gonna try to blow up the spirit portals

As this episode shows that Unalaq isn't evil and that Korra isn't good it's possible that Bryke are trying to add more depth to the characters. It will be interesting to see whether the Agnai Kai were paid by one side to make the other look bad or whether it was a coincidence.

I was surprised that there was so many people from the North and South Water Tribes in Republic City given that it was originally composed of Fire Nation and Earth Kingdom people, is nowhere near the north or south pole, and both Water Tribes have very small populations (especially the South due to the devastation caused by the war).

Happy that Eska and Denske will are going to start playing a large role in the plot. I wonder if they'll inflame tensions in Republic City?

Also happy that we may see what's happened to the Fire Nation since ATLA.

Not really sure what purpose the Tenzin side stories have. They're nice but if they're not related to the plot then you may as well cover them in one of the comics.

Are you kidding me? I'd LOVE to see that! Why? Because it's realistic. Most fictional alpha couples are the types that meet when they're young and stay together forever. But it's refreshing to see an alpha couple break up because of the very realistic challenges of maintaining a career and being on opposite sides of an issue. Well maybe they could have gotten somewhere if Amon and the movement actually had some valid points besides, "bloo bloo benders can hurt non-benders", which doesn't take a terrorist movement to point out or at least a solid goal that didn't involve wiping out an entire group of people.

Let's be real, if there WAS non-bender oppression on a wide scale (there wasn't) that was so bad that it called for change (and it's ridiculous because the rest of LOK would basically be about Korra traveling the world with her masked terrorist buddy so she could hold everyone's hands and tell them to check their privilege, never mind how messed up that would be coming from a bender and therefore part of the oppressing class) the Equalists would NOT have done the non-benders any favors.

And like others have pointed out, the council was disbanded and a president was elected as a result of the movement, though I'm more inclined to believe it was more because they realized it was an outdated and ineffective way of governing than it was about "omg, delicate non-benders need representation too!" because seriously, all they would have needed to do is have some bender council members step down and put in a few non-benders.

BASICALLY, it was dropped because the only legs the Equalists had to stand on were Amon and his charisma and Hiroshi and his money and they were both horribly shattered with a sledgehammer. And the fact that, you know, there is not an epidemic of non-bender oppression going on though I wouldn't have been surprised to hear there was in the months following the end of book 1, THANKS to the Equalists. I don't think he'll necessarily be a bad guy (or else a running trend with LOK is going to be the leaders of republic city being constantly replaced) but I think to an extent he might be corrupt. It depends on if he genuinely feels it isn't RC's place to get involved in the war or if say, someone who would benefit from the war lasting so long is paying him to stay out of it.

I know Mir is clearly superior and that Pierrot has had some QUALITY issues, but I think people are too quick to bash them. There have been some really pretty scenes, particularly in the first two episodes.

I'm afraid Pierrot can't take much credit for most of those screenshots. The backgrounds are produced in Burbank.

Pierrot's been pretty ok so far. The biggest issues in their episodes are main characters rarely blinking during dialog scenes, their tweens in action scenes, and their tendency to draw background characters sloppy. It'll be nice to have Mir back.

Varrick is a wild card. He can wind up the eccentric Water Tribe Richie Rich he's been portraying or he can pull a wicked diabolical heel turn. If anything he's spot on about Bolin being a charismatic, muscly, cheesy mouthpiece that people just eat up.

I didn't mean to downplay the awesome visuals you posted. Sorry about that. FWIW, the only public criticism shared by anyone in the production about Pierrot's work was that Korra was waifu-skinny during the scene in the premiere where she tries Golden Shower Bending for the first time.

At this point, I'd say it's a mixture of the two. Bolin gives Varric leverage against Mako, who until they're break up, would have been a kind of leverage against Korra. Bolin just so happens to be relatively easy to string along, since he's not one to look at a gift with suspicion.
