Given what we'd already seen in that episode in how Azula dealt with Ty Lee, it was implied that Mai was acting out of an understanding of where she stood with Azula rather than it having anything to actually do with her brother.

Well, the art was... mediocre. The story was okay, I guess. Pretty short. But does Mai really think she can just take her brother from her parents and have him live with their aunt and expect to get away with it? I don't see that sticking without a fight.

Honestly the whole reason Zuko and Mai had all this drama and broke up is because if they hadn't Mai would be around to tell Zuko to stop trusting his crazy sister (And they wouldn't be able to do this wierd... thing... with Suki)

The key thing to remember here is that Toph sensed the weapon in Azula's hand. We know she can't see things flying in the air and since Mai is pretty fast, keeps her distance and can shoot multiple projectiles with ease, Toph would have her work cut out for her.
