Reviving this in the interest of preventing excessive thread derailments. This applies mostly to ATLA, but LoK debates are welcome too if you feel they don't fit in any of the other threads.

Got a problem with the way something was handled in the series? Are there things that just bug you? Debate, discuss, or vent your frustrations here, just try to keep it civil.

I don't care about the "Beifong" line. What I care about is the Toph line. The Lin line. If Lin doesn't have kids, I want her DNA or Toph's DNA to crop up in Avatar Series 4. I want clones!

Well, we really don't know if she's actually unmarried or not a widow yet. We don't know much about her at all except she's Toph's daughter and she's a bit of a hard ass. Hopefully, the next episode will focus on her.

Watch it end up being a totally mundane revelation, or something that should be drama filled, and nobody cares:

"I have to know who my father is, mother!"

"It's Fire Lord Zuko."

"...sorry, what?"

"Yeah, he was gonna pull out but he'd just had a new phone installed so it rang and it startled him. I wanted to argue but he was actually not lying if you can believe it."

"W-what about his wife?!"

"Have you never heard of a threesome? Anyway, congrats! You're royalty."

Toko is a favorite crackship of mine, sorry.

Actually, Toph seemed to be one of those who had little to no issue with Zuko. And there was that scene where she complained everyone had a life changing moment with Zuko except her. So I could see it actually.

My theory about why Tenzin and Lin split was that Tenzin wanted children (at this point Aang had probably died already and he was The Last Airbender) while Lin didn't, or couldn't. And Pema was young and fertile and therefore able to provide him with natural Airbender heirs, since the Air Acolytes probably wouldn't be able to develop the spirituality needed for Airbending in time before he died. Lin seems like the kind of person who would prioritize her job over a family, whereas Tenzin is the opposite, which is probably what he was referring to when he said they had different goals in mind.

Also, the idea of "pegging" just didn't appeal to him.

That's perfectly reasonable and addresses the thing that a lot of these shipping discussions don't address: sometimes people can love each other and even be IN love with each other and still just not work as a couple, whether because they want different things out of life or because circumstances aren't right for them or even because they're just not good together despite their feelings for one another. They have to make someone the villain (i.e. the "Pema is a homewrecker" meme) rather than acknowledge that some relationships just aren't right even when there are lingering feelings.

i'm a few episodes too late so i guess i can stick this here

>out for revenge, Tahno starts attending equilist rallies, marking out targets, maybe even learning a bit of chi-blocking here and there
>studies turning his bending moves into hand-to-hand combat
>uses his new equalist contacts/bribery to het his hands on some high tech gadgets and weapons
>eventually starts going around at night kicking equalist ass in a modified version of his walk-on costume

I think I've discovered why I like Zutara more than Kataang during the show's run, though I could tell what was going to be:

Bald kids dating older girls make me uncomfortable. When Aang had hair it felt okay. When Aang was an adult it felt natural. When Aang was shipped with Toph or Meng it didn't feel so wrong. But Kataang felt like it needed Aang to be older or not so 'giant babby' mode.

Yes, it's shallow, but whatever. Zutara stuff makes me cringe a lot less, though canonically it doesn't work.

Makes sense to me. One of the primary things that inspire shipping is how characters look together - hence why the more attractive characters tend to get paired together regardless. Most people dislike baldness, finding it displeasing to look at, so they'd thus feel less willing to ship bald people.

Meanwhile, Zuko's scar doesn't suffer from this, since in animation it appears significantly less horrific than it would in reality, and so it's easier to think it looks 'good', or otherwise associate positive traits with it.

I wonder if I'm the only one who doesn't really care about either Kataang or Zutara in the canon, but just finds Zutara fanart nicer to look at. Not in the sense of Zutara artists being better than Kataang artists or vice versa, and of course I'm excluding horrible "How I became yours" type crap, but I just find things like the palette contrast between Zuko and Katara to be a little more pleasing to the eyes. It doesn't even have to be shippy in nature.
>> No. 113133
>>113131
I'm in the same boat, kinda - whilst I don't think that Zutara would ever work in canon, nor have I ever wanted the ship to be canonical, I do think that Zutara fan art tends to look better (though not for the same reasons as yourself, it seems). Though, this is mostly because the majority of Kataang art I've seen seems to try and emphasize how young they both are, which doesn't really do it for me. When the art piece makes them older than they were in canon, though, I tend to find that Kataang looks better, and it often strikes me that it's much easier to find art of aged Kataang than it is for other pairings.
>> No. 113136
It's the same with FinnXMarceline. The artistic and personality contrast with the two is a lot of fun, even though it's either endgamiest of endgame or never going to be. The thousand year old evil queen and the little adventurer that helped her remember a simpler time.

It's things like this that made me slightly disappointed that Aang hit that growth spurt. I wanted him to remain at least a hair shorter than Katara out of annoyance with "He's smaller than her, it's icky" source of reasoning for the Zutarians.
>> No. 113260
What if they'd left the whole romance shit as an open ending? Katara doesn't kiss anyone, Mai doesn't take Zuko back immediately (you DID leave me behind in a dungeon, Zuko.) and it ends with the gaang looking off into the sunset.

Korra comes around, fuck with everyone as to the resolution, Tenzin has a waterbending sister, but Zuko's kids have waterbenders too. And then Bryke just never reveal who fucked who. A family tree Tenzin's holding has his thumb over his mother. Zuko's wife 'was busy today but she sends her regards'. Just never let the teasing end, increasing notoriety, increasing interest.

I wouldn't have minded a Zutara end, frankly. Yeah, you'd have to change some stuff, but Katara and Zuko did start bonding near the end in a way that could be romantic beginnings with a few bits messed around. Still, I'd prefer someone just said the elephant in the room.
"Guys, we have a month before the supercomet comes and messes everything up. Can we please just keep our hands to ourselves until the world isn't in danger? Just for a while?"
>> No. 113351
Avatar is one of the few shows where the shipping potential didn't capture me and still hasn't, probably because I was more interested in the plot and the setting and I wasn't as active on the internet. I didn't really care if any of the pairings became canon, but I did see some sense in them so it wouldn't have bothered me if they happened. Just as long as they didn't steal the spotlight from the story.

That said if I had to pick between Kataang or Zutara, I would have picked Zutara because the character dynamics were more interesting to me.
>> No. 113352
A Zutara ending would have been completely out of left field. It was entirely a fandom developed idea. Everyone I've introduced the show to through the dvds got absolutely no vibes that Zuko/Katara was even a possibility.

You know what I can't stand about this? Every side is strawmanning the other. The Zutaran livejournalers made the Kataangers out to be deluded and petty and a bunch of neckbeards, whe the Kataangers make Zutarans out to be shallow and self-inserting and haters of the show canon and obese women.

Fuck both of you asshole camps. Zutarans and Kataangers.

No
Stop
Stop right now
Take your hands off the fucking keyboard and smash your fingers with a hammer
I. Don't. Give a FUCK. That you have examples of the other side acting like that, because no one person can speak for a fandom.

Kataangers were never petty or threatening the authors or just out for whatever bullshit you concocted up. They liked a ship and their ship was canom.
Zutarans are not all obese women, focusing on tropes or attraction does not make you a bad person, and whatever other bullshit you concocted up. They liked a ship, and their ship wasn't canon.

Now, seven years later, both camps are fighting longer than most other nerd wars last and oh my god you all need to stop acting like children.
I liked Zutara.
I am not nor have ever obese or a woman
I thought it worked with tropes and were a generally more interesting pair of interacting characters.
Was I upset at the ending? No, it was clear by Book 2's end it'd have to pull some major hurdle hoops to be a thing, and good friends is fine too.
Do I like exploring altverses where the story goes Zutara end? Yes, I like toying with circumstance and outcome into interesting ways.

Do I hate Kataangers? No.
Did I ever have a problem with them? Only the ones that knew what I shipped and rubbed it in my face.
Do I still hold resentments? No.
Why? BECAUSE IT WAS FIVE GODDAMN YEARS AGO.

I want to express this whole mess in words that won't just get everyone dividing into camps of baiting abd bitterness like always, but that's impossible, so I'll just say this. This.

That is the thing, before the end of season two Katara and Zuko did not interact at all in any real sense beyond 'Give Me The Avatar!' 'No!' (after that, it was halfway through the next season before they met again and she was the most hostile), so when the whole 'interesting interaction' claim is invoked it hurts the argument.

Moreover; the Prince/Commoner, Fire&Water & Redemption-through-Love things? Those _are_ the biggest tropes, and I am a bit curious as to what others you associate with those two.
>> No. 113379

Why, whatever is the matter with the word trope?
>> No. 113380
Some people think that the word was invented by TV Tropes, and that any use or discussion of tropes is invalid due to the site being "stupid".

It's a loaded term, basically. Like how words like feminist, socialist or atheist can get a negative reaction from people without them knowing what the words actually MEAN.

There's nothing wrong with the word itself, but most everyone who uses it online is some shitty fanfic writer who thinks tvtropes is the bible for writing.

Not to mention TVTropes seems to have its share of SJW morons as well. Like people who claim misogyny is the only reason people prefer Arya Stark to Sansa or who claim fucking Inu x Boku promotes a message of anti-miscegenation.

I spent time on the TV Tropes forums in the past, and I never saw anyone who think either of those things. Are these just people you're making up to justify your dislike of the community? Because honestly, there are better reasons to dislike it than those. The community's obsession with deconstructions, for example.

Either way, dismissing a resource because you dislike some of the people responsible for it is stupid. Awareness of recurring motifs in fiction is a useful thing for a person who wishes to either apply critical thinking toward or to create new things to have, and TV Tropes creates that. There's a danger of people thinking there are forumalae you're supposed to be following, or that tropes only exist to be subverted, but the risk of that danger is not so great that it is better to go forward blind.

I remember seeing someone bring that up about Inu x Boku SS before, but if it was ever on the actual page or its YMMV it seems to have been replaced with something a little less dumb, though not by much.

And the stuff about Arya vs. Sansa is hardly limited to TVTropes. There are tons of people like that everywhere on Tumblr and the Westeros forums, it's not TVTropes' fault for having crossposters.
>> No. 113519
Just why DO Mike and Bryan think you have to add unnecessary dialogue to scenes that play out perfectly well either in silence or with the musical keys in the background?

I refer specifically to two scenes: Zuko's "NOOOOOOOOOOOOO" when Azula shoots lightning at Katara and the scene where Lin gets her bending taken away with the petty banter in which she calls Amon a monster. Both of these required zero dialogue to be effective.

What the fuck is WRONG with these two assholes and their desire to make everything like the Star Wars Prequels?
>> No. 113522
>>113519

From the transcribed LoK commentary or the artbook or something they mentioned that Nickelodean actually insisted on them adding even more dialogue to these kinds of scenes, and they had to fight to leave them be. It might not be totally their own decision.
