My laptop, a Dell Inspiron E1505, is dying and I've made up my mind to replace it with something better.Unfortunately, I'm a poor college student and I've only got a thousand dollars stashed away to get a new one.Can anyone suggest a relatively good laptop that I could buy, preferably online, for a thousand dollars or less?
>>1890Are you sure that you're not thinking about Asus?I mean, I've been emphatically warned away from Acers.
>>1891My computer is an Acer, my friend's is an Acer, and they're both the best computers I've ever used.
>>1893That's interesting. I wonder why I've been hearing so much bad press about them. I'll have to look into this. Thanks again for all of your help. If you find anything else you'd like to suggest, please don't hesitate to do so. You've been a great help.
Alright, /tek/! This weekend, I'm intent on purchasing a new laptop! Thing is, I'm not really sure what to look for! Can you help me?Whatever I get should be strong enough to play the likes of Team Fortress 2, at least, since people won't stop bugging me to play it. I do some writing here and there, plenty of image and video saving, though not metric tons of it by any means.I have about $800 to work with, but I'm also going to need a mouse and headset, maybe a gamepad.
>>1871That I do.But first I would need to know what your budget is.
>>1872I suddenly find myself with an extra hundred or so dollars since I didn't buy my laptop last weekend. And of course, I don't have to buy all my peripherals all at once. So yeah. Upwards of a hundred dollars.
>>1880For a gamepad, I'd say stick with keyboard and mouse.Mouse, I'd go with anything laser Acer. Now headphones, this is where the fun comes in. CAPTCHA won't display on 4chan for me, keeping me from posting.I was hoping one of you guys could help me with that.Firefox, latest version. Windows XP.
>>1845 So your ad blocking/malware filters were blocking it?
>>1846What I think happened is that some kind of malicious software had altered the Hosts file and then proceeded to lock everything down so I couldn't change it back.I don't think adblock or anti-malware would try to keep me from reaching Google. That, and the last person to use this computer didn't use it very wisely.
>>1848Most likely happened when the spambot guy altered the captcha so his bots could post again.
Oh, Hi there /tek/, Just got Firefox for my computer and I was wondering, What are some good add-ons for Firefox?
>>1815I had this problem a long bit ago. My new computer doesn't, though.
>>1815Restart your browser session?
>>1817That does not help. Firefox seems to have a few problems here and there.Like mine, I cannot use drop-down menus.

Also starts shutting off on accident.>After months and months of bullshit, I plug the power out of one of my disc drives and disconnect it from the motherboard.>My PC now runs like new. What gives? I know my CPU eats up crazy electricity, but everything else on the board is pretty green. You mean to tell me that this one disc drive was causing all that trouble?
You know, I honestly wouldn't doubt it.
Your power supply is dishing out enough juice. You need a new one, bro. Sorry to say. I had this problem more than once with more than one computer.

>>1753Consciousness and sentience is my least favorite subject. No matter how you slice it, the nihilist is probably right. :\I'd like to be proven otherwise, but it doesn't look that way.
>>1753I am such a nerd. This game was the first thing that article made me think of. In the game's world, the mechs have targeting AIs that are modeled after different animals, and each has different properties relating to their functionality. When they mentioned using that data to design cognitive computing chips, I was thinking that any specialization the originating brain had would probably show through in the chips.Unrelated: are there any neural modeling experiments like Folding@Home?
Damnit, Google. The reason I liked you better than Bing was because Bing was clunky as hell and twice as slow.Anyone got a new preference for image searches over Google, because till they fix their shit or provide me with display options (like the number of goddamn pages you try showing me at once) it just isn't as good.
>>1745It's funny. Common cold war knowledge is that Area 51 is used for testing MiGs and other Soviet tech so better tactics can be developed against them. How people got "alien" out of that I'll never know...
>>1746Unusual aircraft? The secretive nature of it all (they must be hiding *something*!)? Peyote? Alternately, they had no actual alien tech there, Roswell was just a weather balloon, BUT aliens actually do visit Area 51 to study our military tech and strategy...not because they're invading or anything, just as a curiosity, and perhaps as a way of learning about their own past, the way we study chimps to learn how our hominid ancestors might have lived.
>>1741 >>1745 Anything that helps get the world on track to a Deus Ex-like Transhuman Utopian potentiality is fine by me. You are now realizing that the Green Flu from L4D Universe is actually the Grey Death in DE Universe and they are infact the same.
whatever happened to real green tech?it seems that after people heard about hybrids they felt that they already saved the planet.
http://www.dyson.com/fans/I wonder if these things could be used as aircraft propulsion...Imagine next-gen choppers and Ospreys using them instead of blades! No need for antitorque rear rotors on helis! And THESE babies could become a reality!
>>1719I don't think so, tim. this is just a powered down jet engine.
>>1732Aww dang, I checked the website, it has an engine dealie in the base. I thought it used an electric force thingy to propel the air. I read about one sed for computer fans. It works like the Ionic Breeze thing.t
Recommendations about mp3 players that are not iPods?
http://www.mp4nation.net/catalog/The S:Flo2 is a rebrand of about the finest portable digital music player you can get and it's comparatively cheaper than iPods and Cowons. If you're skeptical, look it up on Head-Fi, big audiophile forum. And I can personally vouch for MP4 Nation being legit and having good customer service, even if the site looks amateur.
First off, go here.http://www.anythingbutipod.com/I've been loving the Cowon iAudio 7 for the past year or so. The main reason I like it is because it has the native ability to browse my music by folders instead of ID3 tags. I hate tagging my music, it's a waste of my time. The player also supports quite a few formats, mp3, wav, wmv, ogg...no m4a unfortunately. I've been frustrated a few times - friend shares an album with me, I put it on my player without checking the file extensions beforehand, and then learn I can't play any of the songs. The player isn't for everyone. The main controls are touch sensitive rather than tactile (I prefer tactile buttons). Both my husband and I got the same player - for some reason my player requires an occasional reset because the forward button gets "stuck" as if my finger was held on it when in fact nothing is touching it.The controls are also not as intuitive as I'd like, but once you get past learning the controls it isn't bad at all. It can display images and play videos, but don't expect great things. This should be used purely for music playing.Really though, it's all about what features are important to you.

Who knew Legos and good programming would make a decent combination
And a color counterpart, though it's not quite perfect
arduinos are fun. now if only I had the money or time to invest in physical programming.
I know some basic C++ and some basic Java. Any good suggestions for what to to do to learn more? And which language to concentrate on?And, general programming thread.
>>1622'Fraid I'd be in a strictly observational role of the process, if anything. The stuff is interesting, but to be honest I wouldn't know my elbow from a compiler.
>>1623OK, I got an Idea, we'll make a compiler for the .^cake.but I'm too unimaginative to think of what the syntax should be like.so any Ideas, anyone?any Ideas?
A friend of mine just sent me The Art of Assembly Language; Second Edition. This will probably be like watching a peep in the microwave, but I'll record a journal of my thoughts every chapter. Expect pain and the palming of face at my comprehension skills.
