I hate it when people use science fiction stories as "cautionary tales" or "examples" as to why a certain science will not work or go horribly wrong.

It's retarded.

Hardly any sci-fi writers even bother learning the science properly if at all, or the stories were written before the field was properly explored, as with Asimov.

It's called Science Fiction dammit. Science FICTION. FICTION IS RIGHT IN THE NAME YOU ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO TAKE THIS SHIT SERIOUSLY.

One might as well bring magic into the equation, if we're going to go with fiction, there is so much more fun to be had with magic.

Example?

Science fiction is sustained by cautionary tales. It's one of the strongest and primary pillars of the genre. That's why is blows up in popularity during times of crisis, like the depression and the Cold War, it's an exploration of choice and mortality. Why scifi and cautionary themes are so attracted to each other as opposed to fantasy or horror is probably because scifi ranges on the plausible. We have trouble accepting that werewolves or elves or unicorns have anything to teach us about humanity, but robots or zombies or our own selves after the apocalypse does.
But in any case, that's moreso speculative fiction, not science fiction, since science fiction is the broad term. Twilight Zone, for example, is speculative fiction that uses from both broad scifi and fantasy. Science fiction covers everything from Batman to X-Men, to Inception to Star Wars and Avatar. All the greatest scifi stories were messages.

> FICTION IS RIGHT IN THE NAME YOU ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO TAKE THIS SHIT SERIOUSLY.
You're upset because science fiction is using science... not factually? That it's not taking the science seriously? I'm confused

Unless you're specifically talking about 'CLONING IS WRONG. THIS IS MY STORY WHERE I WILL BEAT YOU OVER THE HEAD ON WHY CLONING IS WRONG WHILE INCORRECTLY AND UNSUBTLY SLAMMING YOU WITH SCARY FACTS ABOUT CLONING AND HOW IT WILL DAMAGE US' ect.

Because otherwise I think you're terribly missing the point of exploring themes here. Science fiction isn't obligated, at all, to use science correctly. Everyone knows that hyper drives and light speed and perfect cloning and tons of other popular scifi tropes are nigh-impossible or have since their popularity been proven incorrect. People still use them and no one cares.

Well yes, there's limits for everyone. I'll be watching movies for sure and think 'but that doesn't even make any fucking sense.' Like Jurassic Park: I was 7 when the movie came out and I complained through most of it about how it got everything wrong. I'm mostly annoying for pointing out political/sociological flaws in stories because I'm really interested in those points.
Mostly I'm just pointing out that Maya can't lament science fiction as a vehicle for social commentary when that's always been one of it's standing features. And then I go confused because she said that it wasn't being factual and then slammed it for also not being grounded in reality.

No.276912

I'm talking about people looking at science fiction tropes and stories and taking them as science fact, or eventual fact and using it an argument against real scientific fields when science fiction blatantly advertises itself as fiction.

IE:
>Robotics is bad because if we have robots they will go crazy and kill people
>Genetic engineering is bad because we will create monsters
>Cloning people is bad because we shouldn't play god

When the real science is completely boring, mundane, safe, well regulated, constrained by morals and ethics and funding and sometimes shit is just plain old impossible.

Robotics helps save lives in disasters, Genetic Engineering is EVERYWHERE in our food and can be as simple as rubbing the flowers of different fruits to make hybrids and cloning is being used to try and create new organs for the sick.Sci-Fi often takes things to extremes to explore various themes, it is as you say, a vehicle. But those extremes cannot be reached for the reasons listed above and social/political reasons like you mentioned.

I'm not attacking Science Fiction, I'm complaining about the way some people interpret it, hence the;

>FICTION IS RIGHT IN THE NAME YOU ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO TAKE THIS SHIT SERIOUSLY.

In this case I use 'you' instead of the proper 'one', I'm not mad at anyone in particular, I just see this pop up often enough that it grates on me.

I think I confused you by saying Sci-Fi writers don't do much research, which they don't, which is fine, it's just folks not doing their own research and citing these unresearched, unfounded, unlikely, often simply speculative scenarios as weapons of prejudice against genuine, life saving science.

tl;dr: people are dumb and it drives me crazy

Okay, I got confused because you never specified in your rant, all I read was 'scifi uses this too much. It do not follow fact. It be fiction and should be treated as fiction'. You didn't seperate 'genre' 'writer' and 'reader', so I read the whole thing as a critique on the genre, hence the confusion over the last two contradiction statements.
So you're not upset at the genre using a morality trope, you're upset at the writers using faulty reality to push a morality trope and moreso upset at the readers for taking the faults as fact and using it to support a moral reality.
IE: It's only annoying that Jurassic Park was totally wrong, but it's okay because it's SCIENCE!! (ie bullshit rule of cool). But it's REALLY annoying that people latch on to what was wrong about it, treat it as right, and use it to support their opinion on science.

You expected a proper answer. You won't get one. Why do I do this? Why do I put up with the constant shit, day in and day out? It's like taking a giant crap. I'm not talking about squeezing out a log like most people do every day. I'm not even talking about the explosive diarrhea you get after a huge plate of chili fries.

No, this is a crap you can feel building all day, maybe multiple days. Your stomach grumbles, you feel your intestines expanding and stretching as what you know will be a horrible pain makes its way through your body. You're plagued by gas and lack of breath. You try many times to force it to move, but this punishment of the demon lord has its own will. But eventually it does move. And even then, it's not a 10-minute sit-and-shit. My friend, the bowel movement you have at this point is its own Shakespearean play, with scenes, high drama and anguish, and even intermissions, perhaps also a false ending to lure you into a sense of comfort. You battle with it. Friends and coworkers knock on the door to ask if you're alright. An almighty stench fills the bathroom as you worry about running out of toilet paper.

But in the end its over. You've won. Your bowels evacuated, the pressure and pain gone from your innards. You feel a deep sense of relief and happiness that lasts briefly, but you remember for days. You feel as though you could kick Superman in the nuts and fuck Lois Lane, with Superman's only response being "Make sure to wear a rubber, son." You feel shitless.

That's why I deal with the constant bullshit. It is my eternal hope that when I've finally passed all the crap and feces flung at me by others, trying to slicken my path to make me fall, that I will get the hell out of here and live for the rest of my life with my Shitless Feeling.

Your Shitless Feeling will come. Just believe.

Guys, unlike girls, do not joke about wanting to have sex unless they are actually down for it happening.

I beg to diffah. I think it kinda depends how close you are - the more intimate of bros you are, the more likely sex jokes come up. unless I have been misinterpreting signals for all these years oh god

Bullshit. I used to know this other guy who flirted with me a lot in a way that clearly said "We should bone." When I called him on it, he freaked out and got kind of disgusted. Now I'm always skeptical of a man's intentions until his mouth is on my mouth.

People lie. People of all genders lie.

This is how my relationship with my ex-fiance started. We were bro/pals in highschool. Til I said, why haven't we fucked yet? Then we had copious amounts of sex which led into an actual relationship for 3 years, almost got married but broke up.

Where was I going with that?

Oh yes. Now I remember why I stopped drinking Mountain Dew.

IIIIIIIIIII think I'm gonna quit the internet for awhile.

I can't handle the stress of debtors and the like, and now I've realized I've been on the internet everytime I get a free chance to get away rather than REALLY solve the problem.

Er, excepting like, AIM or emails and stuff, since I'm still doing commissions and need to get extra money somehow.

I'm so Internet elitist I shit viral videos. Watching other people outside of us "experts" showing each other 4chan screencaps and image macros is making me angry. These people are trying to introduce me to animal and "300" macros. If I had a degree in faggotry I'd be using it right now to excuse myself from the room.

Oh wait. I do.

I might mention they don't even go to 4chan. They write fanfiction on livejournal and think ebaumsworld produces its own content.
