LOS ANGELES – A sequel to Nickelodeon's "Avatar: The Last Airbender" is in the works.

The channel said Wednesday the new animated TV series will premiere in 2011. It has the working title, "The Legend of Korra."

Nickelodeon says the series will build on the "mythology" of the original "The Last Airbender" series, which inspired this summer's live-action movie from filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan (SHAH-muh-lahn).

The "Legend of Korra" is from the creator-producers of "Avatar: The Last Airbender."

Nickelodeon executive Brown Johnson says the new series will focus on a teenage girl avatar named Korra. Brown describes her as hotheaded, independent and "ready to take on the world."

"Avatar: The Last Airbender" has ranked among the highest-rate series on the Nickelodeon and Nicktoons channels.

Is it me, or does this sound like the set-up for a crime-fighting superhero series? Hopefully this is just early press release weirdness, or a 'first-6-hours-in-Midgar' setup, because I want me some world-spanning adventure epics.

On the side of the benders there is a shawdowy security service, made up of the remenants of the Dai Li and controlled by the members of the Order of the Blue Lotus, ready to use any means to protect the rule of the benders. On the other you have a violent terrorist slash paramilitary group hiding in the slums, gathering disillusioned non benders to its cause, using rioting and terrorist acts against the hated benders.

My friends had even made the joke "Eh, [Sharkman], it ends up being your comic exactly." before any of the specifics were announced, and all I knew was that it was in the future.

I'd never figured in a Non-Bender revolt, though. I'm probably gonna totally steal designs from it when this comes out, and I'm, in all likelihood, still in the early portions of Singularity's story.

Still, though, three things:

One, Gaang Jr. is officially an AU. But oh well, we knew this day was coming.

Two, Aang has died somehow between the ages of 63-69 years old. I'm looking forward to the series, but I still think that's kinda...shitty.

Three, Tenzin (kickass continuing reference to the Dalai Lama, by the by) might well be in his 50s, give or take a decade. He might have kids, even grandkids by then (another kickass old person?) If these great-grandchildren of Katara and Aang number three or more, and Aunt Wu was right, Katara's friggin' dead (albeit quietly she apparently is supposed to go quietly, in her sleep.)

http://blogs.wsj.com/speakeasy/2010/07/21/legend-of-korra-the-creators-of-avatar-the-last-airbender-on-the-new-spinoff/

A few highlights (haha I guess I copied most of the article whoops)

>If there’s a new Avatar, that means Aang has passed on. If he died around age 70, isn’t that pretty young for an Avatar?

>Konietzko: You gotta keep in mind that he was frozen in a state of suspended animation for 100 years, so he kind of burned up some of his extra Avatar time.

>The new “Avatar” is a woman. What inspired you to change the sex of the protagonist of the series?

>Michael DiMartino: It’s not so much about changing because we had Avatar Kyoshi before Aang. We’d established that the Avatar can be male or female and we just thought let’s explore one of those more in depth, because Kyoshi was a popular character with a lot of fans and it seemed like a great opportunity to not retread what we’d done with Aang, who was a great hero, we all loved him, but we really wanted to try something different. And we have so many great female fans out there, who really responded to Katara in the first series, we thought we have the fan base who are really going to enjoy seeing the Avatar be a female.

>Konietzko: Mike and I, we love those characters too, and we’ve encountered countless fans who are male who really like those characters too. We just don’t subscribe to the conventional wisdom that you can’t have an action series led by a female character. It’s kinda nonsense to us.

>The one image that you released is Korra looking out on Republic City, where a lot of the new show take place. Tell me about that city.

>Konietzko: That’s kind of a piece of concept art so when the show premieres next year it won’t look exactly like that but that’s the direction we’re headed. The first series was sort of a road show where every episode they were going to some new location. That was another new thing we wanted to do is root it in one big complex location but mainly one place. We were drawing inspiration from Shanghai in the 1920s and 30s and Hong Kong and even Western cities like Manhattan and even location-wise cities like Vancouver, a city that juts out on a peninsula or an island and has these big mountains around it.

>Will we see characters from the previous series pop up?

>DiMartino: I don’t want to give anything away, but rest assured there’s a definite link between the old series and this one.

>Republic City is a city plagued by crime. There’s an anti-bender revolt. Does this new series deal with more mature themes?

>Konietzko: Mike and I like a balance of tones. We never set out to make an overtly silly show or an overly serious dramatic show. We like dealing with all those things. It’s fair to say we’re dealing with some sophisticated things and the show is growing up a bit. But that said, we’re not in a calculated way trying to target another demographic. Even in the first series, it was about a world war and some pretty serious issues.

>If Tenzin is Aang’s son, who is his mother?

>DiMartino: [To Konietzko] We can say that, right? [To Speakeasy] It’s Katara. It’s not a huge surprise.

Well, after my initial trepidation, I have to conclude that this move to a '30s-Shanghai-esque steampunk city is probably a good move for a fresh change of format. Doing another road adventure would be retreading old ground, and it looks like a fascinating environment to explore.

I must admit, though, 'Republic City' sounds like a descriptive placeholder name. I'm hoping it gets replaced with something classier and more Avatar-sounding, perhaps an updated style to fit with the whole Singaporean theme. I wonder where it is in the Avatar world? I can't express how pleased I am with the design they gave her, I LOVE that she's tall and muscular. She's going to be single-handedly fighting crime in Gotha- er, that big city. I imagine this is going to be like some insane Batman/Avatar crossover.

I'd personally like Tenzin to be older. Maybe in his 30's or 40's. Sort of a father figure to the new group. Part of that is because it would be to get away from the "group of kids on an adventure" thing. Not that that's a bad thing, but I feel that if the "group" in the new show was a bunch of teens again, it might suffer from feeling a little too same-y. Making a larger gap in the ages would shake that up.

It would also be a little weird if Tenzin was around Korra's age, cause that would mean that Katara and Aang had a kid in their mid 60's.

Hell, Tenzin could even be as old as his early 60's if Aang and Katara had him in their early 20's.

I absolutely cannot wait for this!! My reactions so far:

>Aang dead fairly young (for an Avatar)
Yeah, it's a huge downer. The moment I heard Legend of Korra would be in the future and about a new Avatar, I knew this would happen and it makes me very sad. But we know Aang lived a full, rich life, and probably got into many more wild adventures before his passing. I hope this new series mentions some of his exploits. And you know some of the original Gaang still has to be alive! I can't wait to see them.

>anti-bender revolt
Don't know if want... I never liked the idea of benders versus non-benders, but we'll see where this goes.

>metropolis
>steampunk-type technology
Nothing wrong with this, but I hope they aren't too technologically advanced. I liked the ancient times feel of the Avatarverse. The reason I dislike 99% of modern Avatar AUs is that they're just so bland and uninspired in comparison to the show. The characters all suffer from high school drama and wangst, going to proms, stressing over homework, all that boring normal teenager crap. Give me an adventure traveling the world, seeing amazing hybrid animals, visiting lost civilizations, that sort of thing. I have faith in Mike and Bryan though, so I'm sure it will be nothing like that.

>Katara and Aang’s son, Tenzin
>Zutards already B'AWWW-ing and being butthurt
L-O-fucking-L. Cry some moar, babbies! Your tears are delicious!

>Mike and Bryan refusing to talk about the movie
All the proof I need to see they're as disgusted with it as we are. Don't worry, guys, working on this will help ease the pain.

>>82776
>Then I demand Azula either be the firebending teacher who has reformed and wants to make amends for her past and wants to help stop the anti benders
NO. NEVER.

Why so pessimist, bro?

>All the unfun character traits of Katara Toph and Aang meshed together
You got that just from the fact that she's described as a strong female lead? Wow...

>Gaang Jr wiped completely from existence
Or it could just be a good excuse for a Gaang Jr. reboot of sorts. But come on, this was inevitable with the emergence of a new series.

>plot sounds like some cross between Wolfbatman and X-Men with even more captain planet bullshit thrown in

Korra, if things with her went as normal (as far as finding out she was the Avatar) is probably 16.

82-16=66

Of course, Korra's age is pure speculation, so I can't be sure. Either way, Aang had a pretty good run. Not as good as some other Avatars such as Kyoshi, but still not what I would call 'dying young'.

You know, I'm sensing a lot of comic potential in Korra's and Tenzin's relationship. Aang probably went easy on bringing up Tenzin and assumed he'd pick up bending as easily as he did. Instead, [fan speculation] he turned into an aging feckless layabout whose carefree "air" spirit is the only reason he can even do bending [/fan speculation]. You'd have uptight Korra trying to coax Tenzin into teaching her anything he can remember, complicated by technically being his dad.

SCENE EXAMPLE GO:
*Korra rummages through flat and picks apart discarded pots of half-eaten ramen*
Korra: Crying out loud, Tenzin, couldn't you clean this place up? My feet are sticking to the rug!
*Tenzin's resting on a beany bag*
Tenzin: Hey don't touch the rug! It really ties the room together.
*Korra, put upon, marches over Tenzin's head and fixes on him a frown*
Korra: SON.
*Tenzin looks up, gormless*
Korra: CLEAN. YOUR. ROOM.

I should like to point out that Sozin had Azulon during the year of the comet (my personal theory is that genocide is an aphrodisiac for him that's why he started the war), which means he had him when he was 82. Meanwhile Ozai was born when Azulon was 43. So it's not like there isn't precedence.

Yeah, but these were off-screen babies. I seriously doubt that Korra's going to hook up with Tenzin, considering that this is a kid's show. They'll want to make the main romance (if there is one) be with someone the younger 12-18 year old audience can relate to.

Except Tenzin is Katara's kid too. Aang might not have a biological clock, but Katara does. If she's still alive in Korra's time, she'd be 84 years old. Tenzin would have to be 39, at minimum, for Katara to be his mother. More likely he'd be in his 50s, if not 60s.

No.83048

My point was that Tenzin is perfectly capable of being young enough to be relatable.

>>83047
And your proof that Avatar biological clocks work like ours do? Heck I have some good proof that it doesn't. Look as both Roku met Ta Min around 16, and she was already well through puberty so they can't be that different in age. Even assuming she was some sort of super early bloodmer and was tweleve at the time that would mean Ta Min had her child at around 66.

...I just don't buy it. Given that Mike and Brian just gave us a badass, headstrong ACTION HERO girl, I seriously doubt they'd flush that all down the toilet in order to make her romance with her teacher a focal point of the story.

There's no evidence that romance will be any major part of the story yet. And that would make me quite happy, because not every character has to be paired off to be interesting (or to be happy!) She's totally awesome just how she is.

Just going to post something I've been mulling over too much.

If we apply the 40 year fertility rule for women and follow the assumption that Katara would be 84-85 (70+14-15 ) years old at the start of the sequel, Tenzin would be at least 44-45 years old when he starts training Korra. Also, when Aang died, Tenzin was in his late twenties.

So, if Tenzin is 45 years old, Aang and Katara had him when they were 38 and 40 years old respectively.

T at 65 = A at 18 and K at 20.
T at 55 = A at 28 and K at 30.
T at 45 = A at 38 and K at 40.
T at 35 = A at 48 and K at 50.
T at 25 = A at 58 and K at 60.

Imo, Tenzin at 50-55 years seems the most likely, followed by 40-45 and 60-65, but mainly if we follow the 40 year female fertility rule in the real world.

If we go with the theory that women in the Avatarverse have better female fertility rates, then Tenzin could be younger than 45 years old.

I was thinking the same thing. Dude!Tenzin would make a good catalyst for Korra sticking around in Republic City if she has to spend an extended amount of time coaxing legitimate airbending lessons out of Tenzin's vague, unbothered mind.

She's clearly a strong-willed young woman to blaze through learning all the elements at such a young age (maybe there's a reason for this? Could be worth exploring), so there has to be a reason why she doesn't just blast through learning air and carry on handling the rest of the world's problems. Tenzin being laid back and endearingly incompetent feels like an effective excuse, since then she would feel she might as well stick around the city for a while if it's going to take this long mastering air.

I'm imagining Korra disembarking at the main train station with a rucksack over her shoulder and Tenzin's address in her hand, travelling around this strange new city searching for this guy's apartment. She heads down an alleyway, gets cornered by some thugs with an axe to grind, and reveals her Avatar powers to fend off the attack. The thieves get scared and scarper with their ill-gotten gains. Including a very nice rug.

Korra finds the apartment, but has difficulty getting the door open as the other side is stuffed with bin bags. Tenzin greets her as warmly as he can with the resources he has. He apologises for the mess. Some thugs thought he was someone else and made off with his rug. Could she get it back? That'd be swell.

Question, someone on /co/ said they saw an Avatar Extras during an episode that said "Avatars always die in the season corresponding with the next element in the cycle."

Does anyone else know if that's true? Because it would make sense since there are more benders born during the time of year the corresponds to their element, which would mean the new avatar would plenty of bending babies to be born into.

And if it's true, does that mean Aang died during Winter?

Also if true, does that mean each year when they get older Avatars get a little worried during certain seasons? Or even further, technically wouldn't they get worried every year during that one season? Does this lead to a certain amount of predestination in the Avatarverse?

Also, it seems no one can conceive of a Tenzin younger than 30.

Related point: airbending tattoos. Would Tenzin have them? You need to master twelve special techniques to earn them, and I don't think the press release says that Tenzin's an airbending master, just an airbender. Durp. Yeah, I knew Aang had invented a new technique and got his tattoos a step early as a result, but I forgot there were that many steps. Silly me.

I think Tenzin's unlikely to be a master just by sheer probability. Aang was a prodigy to whom bending came as naturally as breathing, and whose loose and carefree attitude improved his technique (up until he needed to learn other elements) simply by how talented he was at it. Aang would likely apply that same easy and fun learning technique to Tenzin, but how likely is it that Tenzin would be as good at bending as his father? It's been likened to musical talent, in that it runs in families, but that's no guarantee and no substitute for the hard work and grit Korra seems to have applied to her study. Not all airbenders can be Mozarts.

I'm just imagining the conversation:
TENZIN: The secrets of airbending will be unlocked once you have mastered all 36 techniques.
KORRA: Great! What happens then?
TENZIN: Uhh...I don't know, I didn't get that far...

aang didn't want to live any more once his twu luv 4ever was gone and started wasting away and becoming less interested in life.

I think one of the main flaws in logic in this thread is that Tenzin is exclusively Aang's son. He's also Katara's son, and seeing as how overbearing and motherly she is with her friends, she's going to have an impact on the kid as well.

"Tenzee, straighten your stance! Don't slouch, no bender got ahead by slouching. Lower your stance! Loooweeerrr... good. Tuck your elbows in! Feet straight forward! Have you done your conditioning? You need to stay in shape if you want to be a good Airbender!"

If Aang trains the kid, Katara's going to be there (nagging at aang or tenzin or both). So Aang may be a tougher master than we think, because A. the katara thing and B. this is him continuing on one of the fundamental practices of his entire CULTURE. If he doesn't teach this kid properly, no one will.

And Tenzin's going to be a pretty damn solid bender. Bending is semi-genetic, and if you have powerful benders in your family, like maybe your mom's a water-bending master and your dad's the god-damned AVATAR you'll most likely have a good headstart.

Also: Tenzin would most likely be kinda dark, right? I mean generally speaking the dark skin is dominant over the light... though it can go either way.

right. tenzin. Anyway, the point is is that they're nice people, and generally speaking they would nurture the best in him rather than the worst, at least in my opinion.

I mean Aang would model his fathering off of Gyatso, and Katara would model her mothering off of... i guess sort of her mother, but mostly on the premise that she'll always be there for her kids. always, 100%, no questions asked (see: her mom died, hakoda left, emotional baggage from that).

>Rated: Teen for Romance (Kataang) and Character Death

>Summary: The world mourns when Avatar Aang passes away due to mysterious circumstances. As the new Avatar, a Water Tribe girl named Korra, begins training, Aang's friends remember their fond memories of him.

>Disclaimer: "Avatar: The Last Airbender" and "Avatar: The Legend of Korra" both belong to Bryke!

>LES: "Avatar: The Legend of Korra" has invaded my brain, can you tell? The internet exploded with info about A:TLoK this morning, and pretty much all the news made my heart soar! (Especially the news about a certain teacher of Korra who happens to be the confirmed canon child of my favorite couple!) This is kind of a pre-series prequel, and begins right after Aang's death at the age of 65. (I'm guessing Korra's around 17.)

Depends on when Tenzin was born. If he was firstborn and Katara was about 20 when he was born (I doubt they'll have Katara teen pregnant, since that'd send a bad message to the kiddies,) Tenzin would be like 60 years old.

If Tenzin turns out to be the youngest in a whole gaggle of kids Aang had, he could be like 40.

I'm sure there'll be some Spring-December romance shippers out there who'll love the idea of an older man tapping dat well toned ass. Although it depends on how Tenzin looks like, maybe he'll be really manly despite his old age.

Aang had fangirls on Kyoshi Island, and, arguably, On Ji thought he was cute. That doesn't seem like much to me compared to Suki, Yue, Toph, Ty Lee, Azula, and a whole poetry club practically throwing themselves at Sokka. I'm not trying to deny Aang was smooth, but he only had eyes for Katara, and even if he didn't, he still doesn't strike me as the type to be strolling around with a harem unless it's in some funny fanart, you know? There was also Meng and possibly a good number of the girls watching him dance.

It's not really shipping, I just think Aang was better at getting girls and not immediately pissing them off than Sokka.

Also, recent fanarts got me thinking, would Korra have Inuit facial tattoos? Might be an interesting way to reinforce her cultural identity.

I was once thinking of possible ways for Tenzin to look and considered them, but they were more prevalent on women in Arctic cultures.

Yaaaay we have scribbles for Korra's face from one of the Korean animators (I guess).

At least now we know she doesn't have a horribly disfiguring scar.
And Meelo seems to be SokkaTwo. ...If anything.

I've heard on /co/ that Meelo is Sokka and Suki's grandson but no confirmation yet.

Probably 12 episodes will mean better animation and less to none filler episodes with more feeling of continuity.

Paranoia Agent has 13 episodes and FLCL had only 6, so 12 episodes for Korra is good enough for me.

ah, found the image finally-FFFFFFFF duplicate entry!!!! I'll just use this one instead.

Following up, being short isn't a bad thing. Many anime series are 26, 13 episode jobs and an OVA or two.

Hell, FLCL was only 6 eps and it was influencial enough that Mike and Bryan made it required viewing every member of the staff. Perhaps the brevity of Korra is a nod of sorts to FLCL?

i'm going to pretend 13 episodes means hour long episodes.

What do they mean by mini-series? Does that mean 12 half-hour episodes, 12 hour long episodes, or 12 feature length episodes?

Because which one it is greatly affects how much detail they can go into.

No.83386
Wait.

Is Sifu Kisu confirmed for this??

No.83390
I'm hoping "12 episodes" means there won't be a 9-bleep-months delay break like there was back when Book 3 aired.

No.83392
I KNEW there was something fishy about the series taking place in Republic city. I was maybe hoping for tons of flashbacks to her training and maybe Aang talking about their lives after Ozais defeat.

Sigh I hope this gets approved for a second season right away as I have the feeling it being a "miniseries" is just to test it's legs for the first season before they commit to more.

Yay I despite Shakespeare. Hamlet + Horatio was the OTP of mine, but William had to keep rubbing Ophelia + Hamlet in your face!

No.83404
i think 12 episodes a SEASON, with maybe 3 seasons would be a perfect forumla. no waste, you can build each season to be great and tell a longer story.

but if it's just 12 half hour episodes, well, that's a pretty short legend.

You know what I would love to have happen. If Korra already has a boyfriend at the beginning of the show, and have it be someone from the Southern Watertribe. None of this mixing the elements fire and ice bullshit. Just a nice normal already established relationship. They've known each other for a few years and just started dating a few months before the show started.

There done. Just undercut all the shipping crap right from the get go.

I can see it now.

Korra and Guy McWatertribe are busy spending some time together when she should be training. Tenzin comes casually walking by.

"When you're done making out with my father, can you remind her she's supposed to be learning airbending right now."

Tenzin walks off with a bemused smile on his face.

Guy pulls away and shakes his head. "Uh... you should probably go train for a while. It's gonna take about an hour to get that image out of my head."

Korra sighs as Guy walks off. "Dammit Tenzin!"

Brisk! Just like she likes it in the morning.

As for the 12 episodes, I have mixed feelings. On the one hand, I honestly wasn't expecting more than one season. The way the story was structured and such just seemed to limit what they could do. Still, it's a little sad that we'll get less than I was anticipating to begin with.

Well... who knows, maybe they'll want to do more in the world after this. I hope.
