What do you mean proper?

Also it occurs to me that we had these threads already, but Zoro and Nami, at least, could work as marines. If Zoro were a high enough ranking marine he could call up Mihawk for duels every weekend.

>> No. 21842
Ace probably wouldn't have that tattoo if they became Marines. Hell, he probably never would have met Sabo. Luffy's scar could be explained away as just a coincedence, though, sort of a multiversal trait that somewhere down the line, Luffy fucked up his face.

That said, do you think the Marines would be okay with Ace in the Marines if they knew about his lineage? I mean, I know they were all gung ho about purging the bloodline in the original story, emphasized even more when he himself became a notorious pirate, but if Garp had basically worked out the issue, they might be more accepting. Or would it be all hush-hush, like before?

Yes, because One Piece is such a monster that even reprints of 3 month old volumes sell more per week than entire other series. It's actually a bit silly.

>Also Bleach is nowhere to be found.
Bleach isn't on there because the last volume was released a month ago. Most non-One Piece series only end up on the list the first week they come out (note that for most of them the weekly sales are the same as the total sales). My condolences.

Who want to soil her freedom but can't. No disrespect to anyone who may like Naruto and/or Bleach .. but I could not be any less concerned with any sort of "threat" from their side. I don't honestly think Bleach will last another 2 years without crashing hard, and .. what's going with Naruto, again? Sasuke or .. something? That whole series is a massive gray spot for me.

Anyone who tries to besmirch Lady One Piece gets the cold, hard fact that it's been, and continues to be, the best selling of the three thrown at their face.
>> No. 21880

One Piece is always in its own class, so comparing it to anything else is always a bit unfair. Naruto and Bleach sold 700k and 400k respectively, where 100k is good and 300k is great. If they don't matter, why did you bring Bleach up? Well, at least you can be happy that they're selling less than they used to.

What's the point of even calling Bleach a Big 3 now. I mean, I get that Fairy Tail couldn't have knocked it out since it isn't published in shonen jump, but Toriko has been beating it for a while now and now Gintama and Bakuman too? Should we start calling it the Big 6 now so that Kubo doesn't come down with Hurt Feelings?
>> No. 22288

Within 3 years, Bleach will be completely blown clean off the radar. I understand Naruto may have .. "street cred" for being one of the first and whatnot, but it's also heading downhill. Story-wise, that series is dead. Different titles are going to pop up and pop back down, but One Piece is looking to stay on the top.
>> No. 22300
>>22286
I assume that's tankobon sales, and the "Big Three" would be based more on the popularity polls in WSJ. There are a lot of series that do better in collections than they do in the weekly polls (or maybe even better than their magazine in general, for some of them), just like how there are a lot of comics that sell better in Trades than they do in floppies, so it's no surprise that the Three Most Popular Manga in Weekly Shonen Jump are not necessarily the Three Best Selling Manga in general.

This isn't defending Bleach's quality or claiming that its star isn't falling (I imagine the end of the Aizen arc was really bad for fan momentum), it's just pointing out that volume sales and magazine popularity polls are separate issues.

Yeah, Toriko has pretty consistently been beating most things in the Shonen Jump Table of Contents (pretty much a weekly popularity poll). It's usually either 2nd or 3rd, switching places with Naruto (One Piece is pretty much always 1st, of course), while Bleach bounces between top 5 and bottom 5, but mostly meanders in mediocrity. In fact, this week Bleach was fourth from the bottom.

So I'm just now getting to Level 5.5 in the Impel Down arc... and there is no way in hell that 4kids would have been able to convert this to their "family friendly" One Piece.

I mean, One Piece is odd all around, but this is "queer" in both senses of the word, not just the one the show uses.

Something I just thought about here.

Why was it that, during Enies Lobby, Nico Robin's bounty only went up 1 million? I mean, she didn't play as large a role in the events as some of the other Strawhats totally, but hell, Nami got 16 Million just from beating one person, and Robin broke every bone in Spandam's body AND helped set into motion all of the shit the Strawhats did. Why only 1 million?

I mean, Chopper WAS lower, but that was because they thought he was a pet. There's no real getting around Nico Robin's involvement.

Hello, I'm here to bring terrible, soul crushing news from the depths of APforums! Check it:

First off, let me apologize to those of you who will be disappointed that this is not a new spoiler thread. Sorry, sucks to be you. With that out of the way, I'll get straight to the point and say that you should be able to expect Chapter 651 spoilers on or around Thursday, December 22nd. That's a few days from now, yes. Also, Chapter 651 should include a two-page color spread. I know, I was sad about that too. Is it possible 651 will come earlier? Yes, possible, but I wouldn't count on it.

For those of you who are new to this, or simply do not understand, JUMP releases two "double" issues back-to-back in December/January to cover the holidays. "Double" does not mean double the content, it means double the time you have to wait for a new issue, haha. But seriously, it does. What does this mean? This means that we shouldn't be getting Chapter 651 this week... but we are. Correction, we are. Because we are getting spoilers this week, super early, we will have to wait three weeks for Chapter 652. Is it possible 652 will come earlier than listed below? Most likely not, no.

So what's the predicted release scheduled for entitled spoiled brats on the internet? Behold:

This year:

January 10th, 2012 (Tuesday) Issue 6 - Chapter 652
December 22nd, 2011 (Thursday) Issue 4/5 - Chapter 651 w/ Color Spread
December 13th, 2011 (Tuesday) Issue 2/3 - Chapter 650
December 6th, 2011 (Tuesday) Issue 1 - Chapter 649

Last Year:

January 11th, 2011 (Tuesday) Issue 7
December 23rd, 2010 (Thursday) Issue 5/6
December 14th, 2010 (Tuesday) Issue 3/4
December 7th, 2010 (Tuesday) Issue 2

So the fate of the New Fishmen Pirates was both funny and fitting for that slick syndicate of sinister scaled psychos, but it made me sad, because it made me remember that Luffy isn't going to live that long!

We all know he's living a full life, but how many years of it does he have to enjoy it before the strain of his own techniques kills him?

This is a serious question, I cannot be the only one haunted by this conundrum.

As far as I remember, his techniques don't actually shorten his lifespan as much as Gear 2nd just starves him (and that only happened back when he was first using it.) Come to think of it....would living for a long time really be a good reward for Luffy completing the journey anyway? Chances are he's never going to settle down with a wife or anything, and once he's found One Piece what adventures is he going to have left to go on? It's not like he's going to want to tell other pirates how to live or be the king of the world if the World Government falls or anything. He barely even tells the Straw Hats what to do and he's their captain--he couldn't lead a population.

I think Luffy would feel like the best possible end for his life would be dying with a smile on his face, as a free man, and going out saving the lives of the people he cares about in the process.

Luffy's life is a mirror image of Roger's. Roger died fairly young and, as we found out later, by his own choosing. He chose to get captured and killed; we don't know why yet.

It's not completely crazy to think One Piece will end with Luffy dying somehow after completing his goal. Of course it'll be with a smile on his face and by his own choosing. Oda would know how to even make this outcome a happy one.

And we still don't know why he turned himself in to the Marines. Even if he was going to die, it doesn't explain why a freedom-loving weirdo like Roger would choose that fate.

For some reason I always assumed that Hiruluk, Yorki, and Roger all came down with the same disease because they were all pirates operating in the Grand Line, and have a sort of vague prediction that Luffy will catch it too and be saved by Chopper's panacea. I guess that it's because Oda's fond of phrases with secret meanings, and "incurable disease" sounds like it could be one.

Okay, there's one thing I've never been able to wrap my head around in Oda's story: The world.

We know it's round, and we know there's one solid "line" of red rock crossing it vertically. So.. like.. where exactly is Raftel? Where is the New World and Grand Line for that matter? And the "four Blues"? The Grand Line in apparently in front of the New World and separated by the Mariejois portion of rock.. so .. in theory, couldn't Luffy just back paddle from the East Blue to get to the New World? Not smart, but certainly faster than having gone through Laboon's side.

I dunno, I'm just having a hard time visualizing all of it. Anyone know of any fanmade charts/maps/models explaining this?
>> No. 23509
>>23508
It is confusing for me too. The only explanation I can see for why you would go through the Red Line to get to Raftel is that the Calm Belt blocks all entrance into the New World....but god now that I think of it the New World should technically be in the same chunk of water as where Luffy started his trip. Ah god this is making my brain hurt trying to understand this.

The only explanation I can come up with is the Red Line is not just a solid ring of land and sprouts out into different walls to separate the New World from the rest of the sea
>> No. 23510
>>23508
The Grand Line is the equator. The Red Line is the International Date Line. The New World is just the second half of the Grand Line, and just as inaccessible from the outside world as the rest. Raftel would be just West of Reverse Mountain.

Blech, I can't find the canon maps. This is how the world works.

Basically, the world is divided into hemispheres by both the Red Line and the Grand Line. They are sorta like the Equator and Prime Meridian if the Earth where a lot more slanted. The Paradise portion of the Grand Line borders East and South Blue, the New World portion borders West and North Blue. Luffy started his journey (the black line) near the Red Line (basically as far from the Grand Line as possible), crossed East Blue, went up Reverse Mountain, and then turned around and sailed back. Yes, that means he is currently closer to home than he was 530 chapters ago.

A lot of people get this part wrong, despite both in-story and supplementary maps. However, look at my other map, where Luffy's journey is red and Kreig's is orange. Krieg was forced to leave the Grand Line as soon as he entered. When he escaped through the Calm Belt, he ended up back in East Blue. If you cross that part of the Calm belt you reach East Blue, and the part of the Calm Belt that contains Amazon Lily and Impel Down you gets you to South Blue.

So, why can't you cheese the system by going down the "wrong" side of Reverse mountain, or the North/West Blue Calm Belts? The answer is a combination of:
A. The magnetic fields and Log Pose system, which means you have to be on the penultimate island to know how to get to Raftel, and you need to be on the island before that to get to the penultimate island, and...
B. The horrible and impossible New World weather, which prevents ships from sailing around all willy-nilly.
C. The terrifying Calm Belt sea kings that could destroy the world if they felt like it.
D. The similarly terrifying New World Pirates and Marines which are deeply entrenched in any remotely livable area.

Also, the one piece world has like, 6 fucking moons, one with another moon. Oda's done this for a reason, I know it.
>> No. 23517
Mihawk's little coffin raft is very small, easily overtaken by any current. He also likes napping, from what I remember his slumber was disturbed by the Krieg armada. He must have dozed off and just got carried to East Blue and there he decimated Don Krieg's dreams while adding to the badassery that is Roronoa Zoro.

But then again, Mihawk somehow followed them back to the baratie. So, my theory, haki oars.

Well I kinda understand it a little bit better now, though this is easily the "Zelda timeline" of One Piece. This >>23514 map is good for figuring out where the Blues are; they're separated by a combination of Red Line and Calm Belt stretching out across the world. But there's still the matter of where Raftel and the New World are. How it's panned out, it would mean the New World is not only located in the same hemisphere as East Blue, but also right next to it. Literally right across that little coast where Fushia village is.

And.. wait.. no. Where would -- wouldn't they have been crossing another Blue right after they crossed Reverse Mountain?! Where is..

They tried to go through the Calm Belt but they were mugged by sea kings and only barely escaped. If you watch the anime you probably missed this because the scene from the manga was integrated into the Apis arc for some unfathomable reason.

Some facts for the record:

-The Grand Line is a long sea that goes around the entire world.
-The first half is called Paradise, the second half is called the New World.
-The two areas are mostly separated by the Red Line. The exception is the hole where Fishman Island is located.
-The Grand Line is sandwiched between two Calm Belts.
-The Calm Belts are home to the strongest Sea Kings, and have no wind or currents. This makes it extremely difficult to cross them without suffering severe losses unless you have a Seastone-lined ship or a Yuda for a pet.
-This means that yes, the Strawhats and all the other pirates are trapped in the Grand Line unless they find a way to escape through the Calm Belts.

Ha, never really thought about that. They really can't get back to their home Blues without chancing the Calm Belt can they?

Buggy I'm certain left the crew before they got to Raftel, I bet he chickened out at the prospect of going into the New World. Shanks is another story but it's likely as well.

You know I used to think Raftel would be impossible due to the Yonkou being stalemated around it, but now we've seen that Whitebeard was only interested in Family, Big Mom is only interested in Candy and Shanks seems mostly interested in the New Era/Generation of pirates. Maybe Kaido is going to be the odd one out but so far it seems like he's only interested in PvP.

Also, strange how Oda mostly leaves the Red Line out of his world building, we have no idea if it's a giant shelf all the way around, if it's inhospitable everywhere exactly the Holy Land or what the deal is.

It's probably hard to believe, but back then everyone thought she had either blonde or white hair. You can still find some old fanart and cosplay with her as a blond wearing all black and white.

You see, it would be too goody for her to be wearing anything else, what with her being a minion of a dude who totally had black hair and any-color-but-orange pants.

Yes yes, but none of you seem to get it. I'm not talking about colors changing, I'm talking about fan headcanons of their colors being wrong. Zeo has never been anything other than blue and... blue, for example.
>> No. 23607
>>23606
And that still doesn't excuse it from being a horrible color combination for him. Blue and blue? Are you honestly happy with that? There's been a sharp decline with Toei's choice of colors since the timeskip began. It stops being a matter of headcanons and starts being a problem with the quality. The colors (please look up Dosun) clash and just look terribly erratic for most of these new characters. I'm still trying very hard to accept Decken's.

>> No. 23618

The problem here is that Oda once again went with whatever Toei did. And in this case they fucked up royally. In the past Toei has had no problem coloring main characters their way. In fact, they did it better than Oda at times (Orange Kuma). It's never been on the level of shit that it is now; like they just colored all the people of Fishman Island by throwing darts at a rainbow on the wall.
>> No. 23621
The thing that annoyed me about Inazuma is that Toei made his hair and coat different colors of orange, which screwed up the half-and-half design, which was the whole point of the design.

Back before Fishman Island, Caribou boarded the Sunny in order to attack the strawhats with a gatling gun, and seemed to assume it would work. When he realized that there was no gun he gave up immediately.

Later on when he fought Pekoms he revealed that he had a gatling gun hidden inside his body all along. So what? Was he just scared the first time because he didn't have his super rookie brother and crew of fodders to back him up? Did he somehow get a gun on Fishman Island?

Here's all the new names from the new databook.

*deep breath*

Scopper Gavin: Sunglasses-ed Jolly Roger Pirate, and probably Second Mate given the "copper." He's already picking up a fanbase over at Arlong Park.

Seagull: Spherical Jolly Roger Pirate, seen behind Crocus as the crew prepared to battle the Gold Lions.

Jobo: The drunk that gave Luffy's new bounty to Bellamy back in Jaya.

Vice Admiral Stainless: aka Vice Admiral Epicstache. Victim of Doflamingo and fighter in the Paramount War.

Vice Admiral Mozambia: The officer controlled by Doflamingo to strangle Stainless.

Vice Admiral Cancer: The third VA at the meeting, with the cool sunglasses.

Hakowan: Wapol's cyborg dog. Name roughly means "Box Bark."

Isa: Aisa's mother. May also be "Ether."

Gode the Wise: Enel's Mesopotamian-esque servant.

Warashi, Mayushika, Yotsubane: Shandians defeated by Ohm.

Moiru: Appeared in chapter 272; no idea who this is, probably a Skypiean. He looks beat up in his headshot.

Mochi: Little Skypiean boy.

Dr. Kuroshiru: The doctor Ace mistook for Teach in his coverstory.

Habu: A worried-looking woman from the Calgara flashback; other than that, I have no clue who she is.

Kyuji: Moda's father, from Ace's coverstory.

Koda: Moda's mother, from the same.

Captain Kibagaeru: The ex-captain of the Fanged Toads, now with the Foxies.

Ishigo Shitemana: The Water 7 resident the Straw Hats went to to exchange their Skypiean gold.

Dr. Kyukyu: Iceberg's caretaker after he was shot.

Yanao: The man who helped Usopp in Water 7; this is also the first instance I recall of Oda actually FORGETTING SOMETHING, as he'd named this guy something else in an SBS.

Judge Georgie: The guy who sentenced Tom.

Bushon and Steve: The Sea Train stationmasters.

Oran and Mizuira: Father and daughter Ohara residents; other than that, no clue who they are.

Lasky: Kalifa's father, and member of Spandine's CP9.

Kanezeni and Nigerata: More people from Robin's flashback who I don't know anything about. Kanezeni looks like a kind old lady, and Nigerata like a creepy middle-aged man.

Sergeant Cosmo: The little robot in the tricorn hat from Enel's adventure.

General Galaxy: The little robot in the samurai armor from the same.

Makuro: The little robot in the knight armor from the same.

Captain Shimazu: The weasel-looking captain of the Space Pirates on the moon.

Terry Gluteo: The Revolutionary in the dog hat from the post-Enies Lobby arc.

Unigaro: The unicorn zombie on Thriller Bark.

Mockdonald: The tree zombie having tea with Unigaro.

Captain Guu: The Captain of the shadowless crew seen after Moriah's defeat.

Chief Petty Officer Asahijya: The Naval officer who gets his shadow back after Moriah's defeat.

Egana: Margarita's (woman whose shadow was in Cindry) boss.

Minoruba and Kairiken: Beaten-up bounty hunters on Sabaody.

Jyudi: The doctor shot by Chalross.

Heat: The fire-breathing, zombie-looking member of the Kid Pirates.

Wire: The other prominent Kid Pirates member, with the BDSM-esque devil costume.

Stansen: The giant who befriended Rayleigh at the auction house.

Rear Admiral Sicily: The officer who reported Luffy punching Chalross to Sengoku.

Tiffany: The transvestite who tried to catch Sanji in a butterfly net.

Shanba: The head caveman on the island Chopper was sent to.

Commodore Daigin: The officer in the samurai helmet Sadie wouldn't let into Impel Down.

Prince Preto: The first guy we see Iva *ahem* demonstrate his powers on.

Roida: A reporter at Sabaody covering the Paramount War.

Vice Admiral Bastille: The giant VA in the iron mask, apparently named in reference to "The Man in the Iron Mask."

Outlook III: Sabo's dad.

Aho Desunen IX: The particularly loathsome Goa noble who explains that the residents of the Grey Terminal deserve to die for not being nobles. His name apparently means something like "Smug Idiot."

Aho Zurako: A little girl Goa noble and apparently the only one with any reservations about letting the Grey Terminal residents die.

Bunny Joe: The Revolutionary in the nice hat who saved Robin, and unfortunately apparently not Sabo.

Dr. Fishbone: The Navy doctor who diagnoses Coby's acquisition of Haki.

Haritsu Kentiyo: The captain of the crew crucified by the Kid Pirates.

Kasa: The old lady who offered Urouge an umbrella.

"Iron Boy" Scotch: Kaido's cyborg subordinate, challenged by Drake.

Say, would I be the only one who would've found it interesting if this group (maybe +Hancock) had stayed on as the permanent New World Straw Hat crew? I mean, they're stronger on average than the current crew (with Buggy and Galdino perhaps dragging them down a bit), meaning Luffy might not have needed the timeskip to be New World-ready if they'd stayed on. Just because I love the Alabasta arc, I gotta say that never happened. Luffocity got Luffy pretty much killed, and it took a WHOLE LOT more than guts and friendship to save the day from Crocodile.

When I said "Luffocity", I was thinking along the lines of raw determination to kick Crocodile's ass, not the power of friendship. Yes, it nearly got him killed, but it was also why he kept coming back. Stuck him in an elaborate death trap and left no possibility for escape, and he escaped it. The final battle was really satisfying because we saw in real time a man who had previously been depicted as so very in control and on top of every situation (despite making some really dumb decisions - elaborate death traps never ever work, Crocodile) on his very last rope, going from emergency contingency plan to emergency contingency plan (hook, poison hook, knife) but all of them being stripped from him by Luffy's colossal, unmoveable determination to punch him up good (the aforementioned Luffocity). At the very end, he had, for the first time, nothing left - the man who had an answer for every eventuality was out of them. He could do nothing but lash out and take the punches. And in the end, Luffocity triumphed.

That final fight is one of my absolute favorites because I really enjoy seeing the my favorite clever villains being not just defeated, but completely taken apart. It's gratifying.

When Luffy had nothing going for him but Luffocity, it ended in this. Luffy really never stopped (aside from once to take a nap,) but Alabasta was remarkable in being an arc where Luffy's determination to get through anything DIDN'T save the day or end the fight. He entered into the final battle, the last chance to save everything, and LOST.

And then came back and won, but that had many other things helping him (things like Nico Robin and water barrels.) Guts only got Luffy so far.

Er, yes? I never said it did? I know it wasn't just Luffy. I never said it was. I think you're under the impression that when I cited Luffy as my favorite protagonist to see against Crocodile I somehow meant he was the only protagonist who fought against Crocodile.

No, I just misinterpreted a bit by the line of "backup plan upon backup plan falling to guts and determination." Alabasta's the first arc where sheer guts and determination weren't enough, so I took a little offense to that. I shouldn't have though, and it's clear that's not quite what you meant, so sorry.

Shanks:
>wear a strawhat for decades
>get the moniker "Red Hair"

Luffy:
>Wear a strawhat for a year or two
>get called "Straw Hat"

Anyone else find that kind of odd?

Not many people in OP have hair that red.

Lots of people have black hair.

Eh, I always figured that Shanks only went out and really made a name for himself after he left the Strawhat with Luffy.
