You're asking why a series with the central enemy of a money grubbing amoral mega corporation is getting a shameless money grubbing re-make. I think the answer lies within the movie itself.

In the viral video the ED-209 is a huge bitch, bigger than an Abrams tank.

But in the original movie the robot too wasn't really meant for law enforcement purposes, but as a miltary product. I am not sure what the ED what was supposed to do once a perp dropped his gun and surrendered.

So I guess Stuttering Craig gag with ED-209 in L.A from the Future Cop LAPD VGV has more points to it then I thought.
And why if he is that big, not just make him a mech suit?

Man, come on. Why make a remake when they could make something new for once? I know it's probably easier and "you have to introduce an old character to a new audience", but damn it, why can't they just say, hey, this is something new, wanna know what the older stuff was? Go buy it. Then they could work on marketing the older films in junction with the newer ones. Worked for Tron and other things like, hell, Star Wars I guess.

Hollywood is creatively bankrupt.

It's sad that they'll probably do everything they can to make this one PG-13 when the original had to be toned down just to get an R.

>>34075
Plinkett makes a good case for why that is in his review of Star Trek the... star trek. Jump foreword to 5:45 of part 1 to see what I'm talking about.

I know right? Just saw the new Total Recall poster. And bugs the hell out of me that they remade recently Nightmare on Elm Street and Fright Night. I never got the chance to watch the originals of those on theatres, guess I probably would give it a shot if they re-released somehow.

Come on people, the new ED-209 is clearly a pisstake on the Micheal Bay robot design. It looks like something made of razor blades, for goodness sake. I'm willing to give this film a chance, at least. Nothing's wrong with a remake if it brings something new to the table.

That's like saying the "True Grit" film with Jeff Bridges is a remake of the one with John Wayne. Or that "I Am Legend" was a remake of "The Omega Man", and then saying that in turn was a remake of "The Last Man on Earth."

Is that the final design? It looks like they were coding the video game and ran out of polygons. And early on I might add. It's just so...nothing. There's nothing there that I can find iconicly recognizable, like the slight vizor eyes. I much prefer >>34062 by comparison.

a godforsaken amount of money, time, and more money goes into making military equipment. which is why the first run of stealth bombers, the flying wing ones; not the Nighthawk, costs like a billion something dollars each. got to pay for the R&D. now with ED-209, you got a product, but no buyer. the American military doesn't want it, and presumably you can't market it to foreign governments. so now they have to find a way to sell it. hello, law enforcement. you got a tool designed for one environment, the battlefield, shoehorned into another, urban peacekeeping. that's why it's poorly designed for apprehending suspects and is programmed so badly. also why it's defeated by stairs

Well I admit that does look awesome, especially the choreography. Just give this movie a different title and divert enough from the original plot and you'll have a good inspired-but-not-related-to movie.

Ben Hur

Rise of the Planetof the Ape
The Thing
True Grit

Twelve Monkeys
Man on Fire
True Grit
Dawn of the Dead
Invasion of the Body Snatchers

saying that's a remake is like saying a film about an icebergs journey to a faithful encounter with an ocean liner in the Atlantic is a remake of Titanic

then, some of those moves are just the 'American' version of foreign films. so you should toss in The Ring etc.

Agreed on Fright Night. I actually saw it twice. At first I went for Tennant, then I went because it was a damn fun movie.

>>34118
Ok, The Thing "remake", while bad, is more in the vein of what I earlier compared with Tron and Star Wars. In this case, it's a prequel that if anything, gets you to watching the The Thing (coincidentally a movie I'm still terrified to watch fully again).

The Thing "remake" is actually a prequel.

>>34118
And the list goes "On an on an on an oooon..."

Planet of the apes remake was actually awesome, in terms of rebooting the franchise.

The new Superman/Batman reboot is simply ridiculous.

"Hey hollywierd, we need to make a new movie!"
"We've run outta ideas. Let me check my DVD collection.
Here's a movie that's old but got a lot of monies. Let's go do a remake!"
"Awesome, now those who've never seen the original will watch it, and those who've seen the original already will act like fags, but still watch it!"
$$$!
