I just watched Dark City last night. A couple of weeks ago I watched Gattaca. I watched both of them because I heard good stuff about them and mostly because Netflix suggested them to me based on what I like. And I suddenly remembered watching these on TV in my early teens. I never really thought about them that much, they aired on a channel that often showed foreign indie movies. La Cinquieme/France 5/Arte whatever the channel is called now. I often caught a movie already started and watch until the end but I never tried to find a title.

As I watched Dark City I couldn't remember the story but I remembered the ambiance and some little details and realized that these movies contributed to shape my current taste in movies.

I always liked Gattaca. I know it gets a lot of crap from people, but I enjoyed it.

Also for anyone that hasn't seen Dark City yet, if you do watch it, mute your tv for the first three or four minutes.

The theatrical cut has an opening narration that spoils the ever-loving fuck out of the movie, which was apparently included at the last-minute at the studio's behest. In fact, I'm pretty sure the speech is lifted from a late point in the film. (I just watched the intro on Youtube and all I can say is "Why would you do that?!?!?!")

My experience with Dark City was similar to yours. The first time I watched it was during a movie marathon in high school. I was so tired and barely cognizant of what was happening onscreen by that point that a lot of it didn't register, but the film still made an impression, so when I watched it years later, the story was unfamiliar, but certain details and the feel and atmosphere had remained with me.

Anyway, to reiterate: if you watch Dark City, either go with the director's cut, or mute the sound until Kiefer Sutherland looks at his watch!

Dave Grohl is fucking awesome. This was his speech from the Grammys last night, when the Foo Fighters won for best Rock Performance. In my opinion, they were the only ROCK BAND nominated for a ROCK award. I'm sorry, Mumford & Sons and Coldplay are NOT rock. Anyways, I think he makes the best point here about music.

"To me this award means a lot because it shows that the human element of music is what's important. Singing into a microphone and learning to play an instrument and learning to do your craft, that's the most important thing for people to do... It's not about being perfect, it's not about sounding absolutely correct, it's not about what goes on in a computer. It's about what goes on in here [your heart] and what goes on in here [your head]."

Oh, and, Grohl was cut off with LMFAO in the midst of giving this speech. Bullshit.

I saw this twice. I went last week with my cousin and enjoyed it, then I went again with a friend and noticed a few things. During most of the movie we are watching what was filmed by Andrew's cam, then by the tower we watch through the cames Andrew pics up from the tourists, but when they are both at the plaza with the indian statue and Matt flies away, what came got a close up of his face? And all the things that happened just before? Andrew's first cam was crappy so the video quality was crappy, if these were a bunch of phones, I think they also should have been of a slightly lesser quality than his regular cam.

I also saw the Grey last week, which was weird. It felt like 2 movies smashed together. I mean I enjoyed it, but the scenes with his wife felt very different from the scenes with the guys getting taken out 1 by 1 by the wolves.

I'm enjoying Misfits. The odd tits are nice, but the stories are interesting and some of the powers are kind of off-the-wall, like the black chick's "turn men into rapists" power. The black chick is also super hot, hopefully she'll do full frontal at some point.

The reason I keep saying "black chick" is because the only person's name I've learned, despite watching about 12 episodes, is Curtis's (the black dude). Can't remember any of their other names to save my life.

I just wish they'd get a bit more creative, the episodes are all named "Episode X".

I think it's a perfectly fine movie, definitely better than the Hulk movie that came after it, as long as one is willing to accept the lengthy running time and visual flourish Ang Lee brings to it. Yes, it's quite odd in the way it's made, but it does manage to be more than just a brainless "HULK SMASH" overdone CGI filler-flick for the Marvel Movie-verse.

Conan renewed through 2014:

http://www.avclub.com/articles/tbs-renews-conan-through-2014,69756/

His show is mostly background noise to me now, but it's good to see Conan's new show will outlive his short-lived stunt on The Tonight Show. His ratings still aren't great, but TBS constantly playing The Big Bang Theory before Conan seems to have given the show a boost. Although, it makes me think TBS will try to kick it up a notch by playing an episode of Conan on a tiny screen during the TBBT, or plaster Sheldon's face over Conan's.

My only real problem with this is that Michael Bay completely disregards the core of anything he touches. He misses the point, and his company is just sort of like, "hey, Friday the 13th? That's the hockey mask guy? Okay, remake."

Like... I really don't CARE if anyone rewrites their origin, because it was a shameful Frank Miller ripoff to begin with, just a joke, like who cares? There were ducks from outerspace in the cartoons and comics, and let us not forget the Triceradons. Frankly, that isn't the problem. It's that Michael Bay doesn't know his ass from his elbow, and will not pull this off correctly.

Forgot to mention that the mutagen being of Utrom origin, they were always extraterrestrial in a way. Not alien from space, but still. I feel like that aspect itself isn't the bad thing about this announcement, and that Michael Bay himself is the part that should be stressed as being absolutely the worst thing to happen to the franchise ever. With the exception of the Image comics, of course. As bad as the Transformers movies were, I'll take them over Image Turtles any day of the week.

As a result, our current expectation is that the Studio segment will have an operating loss of between $80 and $120 million for the second quarter. As we look forward to the second half of the year, we are excited about the upcoming releases of The Avengers and Brave, which we believe have tremendous potential to drive value for the Studio and the rest of the company.”
