At least right away, since Vader without his mask looked nothing like him.

For continuity sake I guess the new Anakin works better, same goes for the Emperor.

>Qwikster
dumb undescriptive name

>Another advantage of separate websites is simplicity for our members.
>A negative of the renaming and separation is that the Qwikster.com and Netflix.com websites will not be integrated. So if you subscribe to both services, and if you need to change your credit card or email address, you would need to do it in two places. Similarly, if you rate or review a movie on Qwikster, it doesn’t show up on Netflix, and vice-versa.

>> No. 29411

>HOW IS THIS SIMPLIFYING ANYTHING, YOU FUCKS
Because most of the customers don't have both services. Something like a zillion customers dropped DVD service when they split them up.

The real reason they're doing this is because they're preparing for Qwikster to go bankrupt, and they don't want the other company to suffer when that happens.
>> No. 29412
>>29411
Yeah, I kind of assume that splitting the services was probably informed by a pre-existing decline in the DVD service that was being supplanted by the streaming. Seeing the writing on the wall, they starting to prep for "divestment of inefficient divisions.'

Proper way would have been to reference the DVR and other Boxes now enabled to run netflix and then include the information in the separation and transition of the company into two brand names in a way that could be concluded that it will offer better service. But they way it was done clearly shows that thought never went into the process.

Which leaves them with reports like this.

The Thing prequel was actually decent, despite an unnecessary amount of CGI used on the Thing itself for prolonged periods of time with a bit of focus on the spaceship near the end. And the ending segues pretty well into Carpenter's film.

One thing I do find funny is that they never did find a reliable method of improvised "testing". Checking for tooth fillings is pretty flawed, as noted in the film itself.

I think Judge would have even done a "We're back!" kind of episode really well, too. Although, I think the extent would have been something akin to an awkward intro delivered by Butthead and then both of them talking about how they like Snooki's tits. So, I can see why they didn't even bother.

I love how Judge didn't throw in a Cornholio appearance, as well.

Anyway, I agree. The crying as he walks away just seemed so out of place, even for the kind of relationship they set up. I remember thinking "Really?" when it happened. Also, I theorize that he's set up to be a double agent; after he pulled the gun on Ms. F, they talked and decided to take up the mysterious enemy's offer so he could infiltrate it, get their artifacts, and go back to the Warehouse. Honestly it's cliche, but the universe allows for cliches without being hamfisted.

A talking raptor might be too cartoony. But domesticated dinos seem like something that would not only be cool, but more or less a necessity in a world without our staple meat animals, beasts of burden, and pets. And let's face it--domesticating a vicious but intelligent pack-hunting Terror Beast is how we got dogs in the first place.

But it would be kind of cool if they actually went through the trouble of domesticating them rather than just taming them. But we know that's not how it works in Hollywood--if they get a friendly rapt--er--"Slasher," it'll be because the little girl feeds a baby one or something.

Because culture-changing attacks on native soil have are somehow less relevant to the holism of a film than sticking to old source material aimed at an entirely different audience from an entirely different generation. Right?

Complain about the (so far) terrible casting choices if you like. There's legitimate concern to be had there. I don't like what I'm reading and hearing from people nagging about being 100% loyal to the source material for an ADAPTATION.

Which is part of why I would be perfectly fine with everything they're doing (though I probably still wouldn't watch the movie) if they just changed the name from Akira to, like, Johnny or something and gave Katsuhiro Otomo a "Based on a story by" credit.

Yes, seeing as this is only now a pointless Japanese name to an entirely alien reimagining of the source material, the fact that they choose New York City for their setting and "world changing incident", and if Cracked article still holds weight Akira himself is just going to be a generic monster kid instead of a sympathetic figure used by the government; all signs point to this being a huge piece of shit trying to go for the lowest hanging national fruit by ghosting writing stale 9/11 conspiracy into every character's apathetic lines -- while simultaneously passing itself off as an anime this will have literally nothing to do with -- that your devil's advocate post doesn't do anything to prove otherwise.

They could have picked DC, could have done what >>30666 said and bravely stepped out into their own recreation of the franchise without having unneeded Japanese names for Americans or done the unthinkable and let this movie die. But they have a 30 year old bar owner turned cyber-punk rebel trying to stop his psychic brother from obeying some horror cliché’s orders of attacking New York while fighting off the US military with I guess terribly CGIed laser weapons. I love the direction of the show being a tour guide advice on where to go when visiting certain countries and more importantly, where to eat. I also like how they have the locales offer advice and giving their insight on the country. And Bourdain continues to give us a great narration during his trip, just like in No Reservation. His comment about people misusing escalators was great:

"They're designed to help you walk faster, not to make you stop walking entirely."

>According to him [Louis C. K.], if he can peddle his own comedy special—like the new Live At The Beacon Theater, currently for sale for $5 at his website—and “it makes, say, 8 million bucks,” then he would use that money to make a new movie in the same autonomous way he makes his FX show.

>Keep in mind, however, that it’s not sales of Beacon that would fund the film: He says that if Beacon “really tears an asshole into the money monster who then shits dollars into my mouth,” he would then use those shit-dollars to “buy a home and get some security which i NEVER have had in my life and have certainly not gotten from my low-budget show.” However, if he sells enough downloaded copies of this one to justify trying the experiment again, then the proceeds from his second special will all go toward making a movie. So in other words, go buy Louis C.K.’s new special right now, and then do it again when he releases another one. Don’t be the ass cork in the money monster.

Second. Hulu offers most of the great stuff, Hulu Plus for entire seasons. Netflix for movies and some box sets streamed, the mail version for everything else.

Throw in a few RedBox rentals for the odd movie you just have to see now but isn't on Netflix, and you're looking at about $30-$40 a month to completely replace cable.

I have cable now because my landlady pays for it, I would never get cable on my own.

Is it fair to think that if I've never seen a film before, and I can accurately predict how a line's going to end, or certain plot twists that are going to happen, that it's badly written? Or have I just seen so many movies that I'm not surprised by anything anymore?

I really enjoy being surprised. My favorite thing in the world is seeing an actor or film I had written off as being terrible and actually really liking them.

Maybe not badly written. But it's probably safe to say that it's unambitiously written. Honestly, it's nothing to worry about. Everyone who's ever been to TV Tropes runs into exactly the same problem. One learns to enjoy writing based on different criteria, or learns to find the stuff that does manage to surprise.

What exactly are the Criterion Collection's requirements for making it into the collection?

Also, it's funny seeing Armageddon among all the far more "professional" films.
>> No. 31680
>>31676
It largely depends entirely on the company's view of what a 'great or important film' is and somewhat on critical analyses (at least one of which they usually include in the booklet inserts) says about said film. For example, in regards to Michael Bay's The Rock and Armageddon inclusion in the Criterion Collection, both Criterion and the included critical analysis discusses the tight, 'no-pointless-fluff-just-what-works-well' approach Bay has to storytelling as well as the 'controlled intensity' in the cinematography and visual effects of both of those films.

Also, on a related note, I personally find the 'Director's Cut' exclusively released by Criterion to be better than the theatrical version.
