Yeah, the thing about the story with Gurren Lagann is that they have a couple of valleys of falling tension to go with the rising tension. The low point is probably right at about where you're at--but that valley's necessary because it makes what comes right after even more powerful.

You can feel the ghosts of other series' cyncism being banished during the final battle with Guame.

>>75932
See, the thing is, it didn't just have him growing a pair--it established that he always had a pair. You go back, and you see that even though he didn't have ambition before, and didn't want to get involved in fights that weren't his, once he was well and truly into something he would always keep moving forward. He tried to quit once when he thought Kamina could take over for him, but once Kamina convinced him that he was part of this, he never tried to run away. And he never considered abandoning Kamina, either--it was always dependent on Kamina leaving too.

Heck, even think back to episode one--all of Kamina's proto-Gurren-dan bailed when Kamina got in trouble. Simon--who wasn't even part of their plan, stayed by him to face punishment with him. Kamina pretty much had to force him to let him take the fall.

/jam/ please recommend me some good magical girl anime series. I've only watched Sailor Moon and Madoka and I already have Pretty Cure on the list.
>> No. 76219
>>76217
I'm assuming you're meaning Sailor Moon-style Magical Girl, and not anything Japan would call "Magical Girl."

Card Captor Sakura is a classic, but you probably don't have to watch the whole thing to get the gist. Magic Knight Rayearth was sort of halfway between Magical Girl and Fantasy. Like CCS, it's by CLAMP, but the art isn't as good.

I haven't gotten far enough to see it be able to vouch for it, but allegedly Lyrical Nanoha goes from being run-of-the-mill to awesome around the second season. The first season was pretty ho-hum from what I saw of it.

If you liked Excel Saga, there's also Puni Puni Poemi, which is the same thing only moreso and is, allegedly, a Magical Girl series. It is only two episodes long, so you're not investing much time in watching it.

One could also make the argument that Utena was a magical girl series, but if so it's a weird one. But whatever it is, Utena is a weird one.
>> No. 76221

If you're going classic magical girl, you may as well hit Wedding Peach. It's nothing super special, but it's more traditional by far than Nanoha.

Maybe you could check Corrector Yiu, in which magical girls are basically antivirus for the ComNet, a virtual reality internet.
The first season is different from your usual magical girl series with some interesting twists of the plot, specially by the end. The second season is more like your run of the mill magical girl series, but with the addition of a third magical girl that serves more like a rival for the main characters.

There's Tokyo Mew Mew, but I don't know enough about it to recommend.

>>76221
I've only watched the OVA, but I'll second Ai Tenshi Wedding Peach. It's pretty close to the Sailor Moon formula.

>>76219
I'll second Card Captor Sakura and Rayearth (in Rayearth's case, the second season of the anime over the manga). Can't second it enough. There's also the Rayearth 3-OVAs story, but it's very different. Gorgeous animation though.

Princess Tutu is not an action spectacle by any means, I'll grant you that, but it is definitely as awesome and empowering as a hot blooded action series would be, just without the hot blood and with 1/5th of the action.

In Japan the origins of the Magical Girl genre go back to the surprising popularity of Bewitched over there. Before Cutey Honey and Sailor Moon, most Magical Girl shows were more about cute witches using their powers to go about their every day lives or maybe to try to achieve some dream like becoming an idol.

Kiki's Delivery Service would be considered a Magical Girl movie in Japan.

Okay, Slowpoke, I know that you are new to this, but the deal is Araki has been drawing for YEEEEEEEEEEEEEARS UPON YEARS, his grasp on the human body is phenomenal, however he doesn't WANT to draw like that, his art used to be a knock off of FOTNS but he evolved past that and now he draws with a SUPER stylistic slant and awkward anatomy results from it, but it is by choice it looks that way.

Bare in mind Araki is a real life fashion designer, understanding anatomy is PART OF HIS JOB also he draws more like an animator.

>Half the time they just happen to be hanging out
>No one gets beat up or super awkward or labeled a pervert
>Show assumes you've enjoyed looking at her tits and moves on with the story (where her breasts may or may not be covered, but that's secondary to anything)

Why can't every anime be like this, tits or no? Why do we have to have the "he's a pervert!" scene? Even worse is when one incident makes it a defining characteristic of the group for said "pervert", and they make sure to mention it all times even if he never does anything like it again ever.

It's called sexual harassment, and it's a catchall for anything with makes the woman in question uncomfortable while involving any part of her anatomy which Victorians might consider naughty. Any sort of structured environment such as a workplace takes any and all reports of such VERY seriously, as do the police. I was exaggerating about the kick to the nuts, yes, but as for the rest... it depends only how far the "victim" wants to push the matter. If she's fine with the accused just getting fired, then that's all he might face. That's if he's lucky. If she wants to press criminal charges... he basically has no defense against that.

Sexual harassment requires a little more than being caught gawking once, (generally you need to have an established history of making things awkward for people based on their sex or sexuality for it to be harassment rather than just "rude" or "acting like a dipshit") and is more of a Human Resources violation than a crime. You seem to be confusing sexual harassment with sexual assault, which would generally need to involve threatening someone for sex, threatening someone with sex, or touching them in a way they don't want to be touched.

Sgt. Frog, along with what I've seen of the Panty & Stocking dub, has given me quite a bit of respect towards Funimation. Thus far I've enjoyed both those shows more in English than in Japanese, which barely ever happens with me.

But I haven't really seen anything else done by Funimation so maybe most of their other stuff is crap? What are some shows dubbed by them that are worth watching? Fractale looks like it might be pretty neat.

Growing up, I watched a lot of Silent Moebius (I still miss you, TechTV) and Tenchi Muyo!/Tenchi In Space/Tenchi In Tokyo, and I remember thinking there was a lot more lesbian tension than I think there actually was.

I don't know why that didn't tip me off as a kid that I was bisexual.

I remember it being great, too. Violence was a bit shocking back when I was young, and every so often Katsumi's crying annoyed me, but I generally loved the show and I loved her in particular. I just love the "humans vs. supernatural" genre in general. And I remember the female characters being diverse personality-wise, badass, and relatively well-written.

I didn't get to read the manga, but I remember liking the Batman comic (manga?) by the same author.

I should go check those out, then. And I definitely felt she got character development. In the end, her (and the girls from Tenchi) were all pretty kick-ass. I have a feeling Silent Moebius is the show that got me into the "squadron of people fighting professional monsters" genre I like so much.

>>77248
The thing about Tenchi is that I don't remember him being terribly interesting or worth fighting over to begin with, although that may have been because I liked the female characters so much. Although I think that is the point of most harem manga.

>>77256
It's like 90's Toonami Revival Week with this and Cyborg 009 getting movies. I think I like this better than the Cyborg movie, though, based on the trailers (again, not bad, but Jet Link's redesign is generic and makes me sad).

I wonder if they will be rereleased in America with the old dub casts for nostalgia's sake.

Agreed. CCS was pretty great, Rayearth too (though I like the anime version of Rayearth II better. Nova and Debonera are just too awesome), and Angelic Layer... actually I keep forgetting a lot about it, but wasn't bad.

I really enjoyed X/1999 (as far as it's been published), and Tokyo Babylon... uh I guess it had a couple of good moments, at least it had the Sakurazukamori in it.

Tsubasa had too much of a change in tone for me, though. The first season of the xxxHolic anime was pretty good, in my opinion.

The deal is in this anime they've got brains an memories essentially on USB so killing yourself doesn't mean all that much aside from wasting a body so as it turns out the lady is rich and wants to feel a sex explosion since she can foot the bill for a new body...or something like that, it's been a while.

>Japanese police in Osaka arrested 42-year-old animation director Masaki Kitamura today for allegedly threatening to drive a truck into random pedestrians and “then stabbing whoever I can with a knife before committing suicide.” Kitamura, who has directed or assistant directed animated series such as Yu-Gi-Oh, Wolf’s Rain and Mobile Suit Gundam 00, made the threat on the Osaka City government’s website. He had planned to carry out the attack on August 5th in a shopping area on Otaku Road, which houses gaming and anime stores. Police ID’d the IP address of the online posting to a wireless connection owned by Kitamura, although the director denies that he was responsible for the threat and says, “I’m completely innocent.”

>If the police are to be believed, Kitamura enjoys making threats of all kinds. They are also investigating whether he made a bomb threat against a Tokyo-to-New York Japan Airlines flight on August 1st. That threat, which also turned out to be false, forced the plane to turn back to Tokyo’s Narita Airport.
