Sparked from discussions about Care Bears, a bunch of comrades decreed: "You know what'd be better? Carebirds." and lo was it so.
However, the avian-based affection was so much that the concept has broken away from being a knock-off and is now a more fantasy-based adventure.

OUR PRIME POULTRY:

Atticus Finch - hot-headed, sword-swinging youth who yearns for adventure. Is good friends with Charlie, has a ladyfriend named Helmi (another swordfighting finch) and a highwayman mockingbird nemesis.

Charles Winston Benedict Wellsington III (aka Charlie) - british jackdaw scientist and scholar, clumsy and absent-minded, means well but often gets into trouble because of it. Naturally intrigued by puzzles and the like, always encouraging the younger birds to think outside the box. Adoptive father to Ahere the kiwi (raised her from an egg).

Magpie/Maggy (Bitxilore Gazza) - thief/lancer, italian accent, enigmatic and suave, eagle ex-boyfriend in the military (Dirk Peckington), has a thing going on with Hawke, turns double agent mid-series. Her real name is embarassing, so she prefers to be simply known as "Maggy". Mistaken for a boy once or twice.

Gavin Hawke - rookie police officer, lawful-good, has unresolved romantic tension with Maggie, hero of the series, champion of JUSTICE.

Ahere - kiwi, baby and scout of the group, stubborn, spirited, and very naive.

Multiple concept images united to form a group shot.

Species probably aren't to scale.

PLOT:

Originally the "Carebirds" were a fundamental component of nature's balance: harvesting crops, changing the weather, assisting animals and delvering the mail.
That depiction has somewhat fallen by the wayside (as has the notion of "belly symbols" like with Care Bears) in favour of more straight-up fantasy stuff akin to Redwall or The Animals of Farthing Wood (or a midway mark, since our birds don't wear much in the way of clothing).

We felt that, rather than just fluttering about being cute, the characters needed a driving force. Something with a sense of urgency.

Since our characters can FLY it made sense to put them on a quest that takes them around the world, letting us see various bird settlements and helping out those they find.

But why are they going around the world? Simple: a QUEST. Who doesn't love a quest?

An ancient Dodo artifact is uncovered which describes a summoning ritual that would resurrect the legendary Phoenix Bird and bring about a new golden age. And, as luck would have it, the stars are almost aligned for it to be fulfilled. A squadron of hawks is dispatched to discreetly recover the necessary items needed to perform the ritual (which are all over the world, naturally).

However, the Council of Owls, learning of this through their agents, seek to stop the resurrection.

Our cast starts off with just a Gavin Hawke, the youngest of the hawk team assigned to the mission. Unfortunately, his squadmates are all wiped out by the owls and their agents, while he just barely manages to survive, clinging to the Dodo artifact...which is then stolen by a certain magpie.

Gavin eventually gets it back and, along the way, meets up with more likeminded birds who agree to help him on his quest.

Despite this, we were considering starting off from Atticus' perspective. The same things still occur, but are recounted to Atticus after a chance encounter: he yearns for adventure, is told "hush up, that'll never happen", only for Gavin and Maggy to burst through his home in a grand chase. Once things calm down they agree to team up, meet Charlie and Ahere, and are on their way to resurrect the Phoenix.

Rather than live in the clouds, the birds of Avian Adventures instead make their homes in sprawling treetop towns or in homes carved into solid rock.
There are bird settlements all over the world (including a penguin outpost in the South Pole) and they seem to be top dog in terms of civilisation.

Obviously non-bird animals still exist, but the birds are the most intelligent and advanced of the lot. Birds will assist other animals when they can.
However, some mammals are just assholes (like gerbils w/ slingshots, sea lions) who just want to wreck stuff and ruin peoples’ day.

TYPES OF BIRDS:

Well, this concept can encompass every kind bird there is, to be honest. It all depends on the execution and what a species can offer in terms of character and diversity.

Swans - Rulers of all birds. Powerful, full of pride...but a bit entitled.
Peacocks - High-ranking advisers. Crafty fucks. Kinda douchebags.
Chickens - Hapless citizens. Prone to panic.
Roosters - The chest-throwing farmboys of farm culture. Brave when need be, but nothing in power when compared to the other birds.
Hawks - Local law enforcement
Eagles - Military and governing bodies. Not there’s no crows and other such birds in the government and military. It’s just that eagles are like the White-Angle-Saxon-Protestant of that category.
Kakapo - Google kakapo. Fat, jolly owl-parrot motherfucker. Possibly some kind of Friar Tuck character.
Peregrine Falcon - The racecars/racecar drivers of the Carebirds. Rainbow Dash would have a ladyboner.
Flamingos - The showgirls of the world.
Cockatoos - Biker gang, basically. Possibly with a heart of gold, but probably not.
Vulture - Only one seen. A resident doctor. Dresses like a plague doctor and everyone, particularly the kids, are deathly afraid of him, and thus, afraid of getting sick and having to go visit him. You could build a story about how to get better while ill, not being afraid of the doctor, and not judging people based on what they may look like, all in one fell swoop!
Penguins - For some reason everyone was set on a South Pole episode, so now there’s a penguin civilisation lead by EMPEROR TUNDRA. (he's not a despot, he's just loud)
Dodos - Extinct. Had an ancient mystic/aztec civilization and they were like Mr. Saturns of Earthbound fame; stupid yet BRILLIANT.
The owls wiped them out--DURING A MANUFACTURED ECLIPSE.

Gulls - Villainous grunts. Big but not too bright. Also beach bums. If you want some hungry henchmen, go to the beach.
Ravens - Elite, villainous assassins. Much more capable. Smart like the crows.
Lyrebird - Just the one. Recurring villain. A trickster who can mimic the voices of the main cast perfectly. Screws with their heads.
Mockingbird - Finch’s rival. Highwayman. Melodramatic. “The Grey Marauder”
Cassowary - Murderbirds. Huge and crazed.
Hummingbirds - Superspies. Not strong, but very agile and precise. Attack in gangs. (one shall be named "Dumbledore")
Owls - Antagonists. A cunning, secretive breed who’ve not been heard from for many years. (Run for your fucking life)
Titanis - Ancient evil bird that the Owls resurrect for some kind of confrontation.

Also: Bats - Yes, bats. They’re a red herring of sorts: initially set-up to seem villainous, they’re actually decent individuals. Anti-heroes. They’re just “birds of the night” as far as this show goes.

Pictured - the Kakapo.

Various species have yet to be truly settled on for the main cast:

Gavin - Northern Goshawk.
Atticus - Chaffinch. (popular contenders: Violaceous Euphonia and Cassin's Finch)
Maggy - Eurasian Magpie in order to giver her "dat accent".
Charlie - Western Jackdaw. He's British, y'see.
Ahere - Little Spotted Kiwi so as to reconcile some size issues.

These are still subject to change.

Aaaaah, I love birds. I've been devising an original story involving a heavy amount of birds for the past year, and now this comes up and I feel like I'm ripping IT off!

Love this concept! I'm still not 100% on board with the idea of owls being the villains (they're my favorite avians) - but I'm pretty sure I'm outmatched on that one. Maybe a rogue owl who wants to help the feathered friends?

My ideas from the second thread

Ostriches: Big and Dumb but good natured, may have an obsession with smallers birds like the Abominable Snow-man in the Looney Tunes cartoon The Abominable Snow Rabbit

Roadrunners: Talk and act like Texan Hicks

Toucans: Fun loving partymakers

Hornbills: sterotypical construction workers

Quetzals: live in a lost Aztec-inspired civilization

Kookaburras: Offensive Australian sterotypes

Frigatebirds: Pirates

Albatrosses: The Navy

Sheathbills, Bustards and Ospreys: Not sure what their roles should be, but they should be in it

Fizz’s basic plot idea. Just throwin’ it out there. Lemme know if I’m forgetting anything, or if things don’t make sense. All details are subject to change.
Long ago, in the time of the Dodos, the world prospered on a technology fueled by the power of the Phoenix, a mystical energy that could be harnessed into almost anything the Dodos could create. For generations the Dodos prospered, and the technology was spread throughout the world so that all birds could live in this “Golden Age”. However, one small group wanted to control society. The Owl Council, also known as the Owluminati, elected to use their wisdom to seal away the Phoenix that powered all, and purge the Dodos who had discovered it. They succeeded, and as all of Dodotech failed, society fell back to simple life. Ever unseen, the shadowy Owluminati could pull the strings...

Atticus Finch, our hero, lives in (INSERT HOMETOWN DETAILS HERE). He trains as a swordsman, always yearning for an adventure that never seems to happen. One of his best friends is Charlie, a scientist/archaeologist. Charlie has developed much machinery for the town, and while he too is satisfied with his life, he hides a passion for the legends of Dodo Technology. Every time he seems close to a discovery, nothing he does seems to work.

In another part of the world, a scroll is discovered in an old Dodo dig site. The scroll speaks of “The Prophecy of the Phoenix”; it seems the Dodos found a way to undo the Owls’ seal before they were driven to extinction, something the Owls lacked knowledge of. Gavin is a member of the team tasked with bringing the scroll to the bird capital (or something) where scholars can study it. As his formation is passing near Atticus’s town, the current Owluminati sends someone to retrieve the scroll, so the last loose thread can be taken out and the string-pulling can continue unthreatened.

Gavin’s squadron is attacked, leaving only Gavin alive guarding the scroll. Before he, too, is killed, [MYSTERIOUS FEMALE THIEF OOH I WONDER WHO] manages to snag the scroll for herself. Everyone seems to want it, after all. The Owls are FOILED AGAIN, and Gavin manages to get himself to the nearest town.

It is here that he runs into Atticus and Charlie. They listen to Gavin’s tale; Charlie’s interest is piqued as he hears of a Dodo Prophecy, and Atticus is raring to finally go on an adventure. So, with some pushing by Atticus and even by Charlie, Gavin decides to take them with him to go off in search of Maggie- I mean, [SECRET FEMALE THIEF] to recover the scroll. Also Ahere can come too. Maybe not yet. Dunno.

Even in the daytime, the Owls are always watching...

FIZZY NOTE: Jabberjay described the Phoenix as this: “The Phoenix is a cold-fusion reactor similar in function to the giant-floaty crystal in the Atlantis movie Disney did, but more SCIENCE and less magic and dead Atlantean souls. It wirelessly powers all Dodotech worldwide, big and small. Dodotech and copycat Dodotech (if it is in good enough repair to function or is built properly) can be powered by other means (ex. steam, internal combustion, windmill) but such means are usually either ungainly, provide insufficient power, or both. The owls want to get their private hoard of non-functioning Dodotech working and to seriously upgrade their functioning copycat Dodotech. The Carebird squadron/Swan Government wanted to claim the Phoenix for all birds, but they don't know what it really is. They think it is a real mystical bird that will somehow bring about a golden age without knowing how.”

My response: “Hmm, my initial thought was that the Phoenix was intangible, that the worldwide powering force field thing could be "released" and then everything would start working again. The Phoenix itself would be the sorta mystical form the energy took for moments at a time, especially when freshly unsealed.

Now I dunno which I like better, as having a material, solid Phoenix fits with the science theme more. So cold-fusion reactor with Tesla-beaconing is sounding pretty good.

There is another point I'd like to question; I thought the Owluminati were trying to prevent the Phoenix's release altogether? I figured they had mastered small-scale functioning of a few Dodo artifacts, and that was their edge in terms of power. If the Phoenix is released, yes, their artifacts would return to full power, but so would everything else, so they would rather the Phoenix remain dormant, which is why they sealed it in the first place.

The Titanis isn't the grand plan, but rather the Owls' contingency plan for if the Phoenix DOES get released. A god-golem brought to life by the massive influx of energy.

"You may have bested us and brought your precious 'Golden Age' back to the world... But you've unleashed something far beyond your control...! BEHOLD OUR GREATEST CREATION, BROUGHT TO LIFE BY YOUR OWN WINGS!! A-HOO-HOO-HA-HA-HA!!"

Just saiyan, I don't think the Owls would have sealed away the power of the Phoenix if they wanted to unseal it again later.
- Posted all this ‘cause I figured it’d be good to record the discussion.

I got interested in this project the moment I saw the first threads on 4chan, but I didn't have time to draw about it until recently.

My drawings here are a little more towards realism than standard cartoon style. I'm kind of a bird fan, and I wanted to draw the characters a bit more closely to their species. For the same reason I tried to draw Charlie with the weird fish-eyes that jackdaws have, and the kakapo is sad and lonely rather than a jolly fatty. Also, since there are tons of different finch species in the world, I drew multiple alternate versions of Atticus.
