After some encouragement from Ryan (the nice teacher in Bad Machinery and also the blonde woman's brothe if I remember Scary Go Round correctly), the bearded guy decides to get back into mad science, having retired from it following getting a steady girlfriend and moving to Wales.

Unfortunately, his five year old daughter fiddled with the Tesla-based machine he'd built (I think that it was meant to be a thing that creates free energy or can wirelessly transmit electricity), blowing him their house.

Being a smart guy, the inventor realises that his daughter is to blame, and says that it's his fault... only to prompt the above strip.

The posted a slightly longer thing on her tumblr where she said that her jobs and some health issues in the year after the comic stopped updating basically robbed her of her passion for her personal comic. She worked excruciatingly hard for a year to be able to be in a place where she could be free to work on The Meek and when she finally had it she realised there was no joy in it anymore. I know that feeling. It hurts.

To make things worse, she has improved technically a lot since the last update, and it's enormously difficult to pick a project back up where it left off when it's been allowed to languish for a few months, nevermind 2 years. If she restarted though, that's 4 years of work lost, so she is stuck between a rock and a hard place. This was her baby for a long time and she still posts the rare character sketch so I don't think she has given up on it entirely, but at this point if she wishes to make graphic novels she might be forced to let it go and devote her time to a new story with no baggage. It's not impossible that she'll resume The Meek at some point but don't count on it. (Also don't ask her when/if it will happen because she's probably sick to death of that question.)

It hasn't really changed, she's just gotten better. She doesn't post a lot of finished artwork online anymore (or at least, not where I know where to look) but she did do the Tomari character portraits for Namco High, and you can still easily tell it's Der-shing's work. The one difference that really stands out to me is that she's drawing eyes smaller and more detailed now, and it makes the faces look more expressive.

Luca probably still looks like Zhao. His character design has been set in stone for years and she loves drawing him so idk why she would change how he looks.

Yeah but that's way easier said than done. Especially if your day job also involves animating or illustrating you're at risk for burning yourself out. Drawing for 8 hours and then coming home to draw more and/or having to set aside weekends to work on your comic instead of relaxing with friends or family can really wear on you, and webcomics are labours of love so you aren't even getting a lot of money back for the blood, sweat and tears you put into making it. If it gets too stressful and you fall out of the update rhythm you've set for yourself you might not ever get back on. The real tragedy is that Der-shing had been working on The Meek's storyline for years before it went live and it had previous versions--she definitely knew where she wanted to go with it and had it plotted from start to finish, but circumstances mostly beyond her control killed it in the cradle.

It takes a lot of willpower + time management skills to bring a webcomic to a graceful finish and people who manage to do it are pretty amazing I think.

Kind of on the same topic, Coela is going to start her comic Platinum Black sometime soonish. It's kind of like The Meek in that it was a pet project with a long history (and that sometimes there's non-sexualised uncovered boobs, I guess) and she has to juggle her job and MGDMT in addition to this new story. She has someone else to do the colours though, and she hasn't missed an update week for MGDMT yet, so hopefully it won't share the same fate. As far as I can tell Platinum Black is built on concepts that I'm super interested in + use in my own stuff so I just really hope it succeeds. I hope it succeeds and that none of its fans are like the MGDMT commenters.

Well, it's been a while since I liked something that everyone else seemed to hate, but it's hardly a new experience for me. Suffice to say I disagree with the offered criticisms, but I honestly don't care who or how many people dislike it (beyond that making it hard for me to find places to talk about enjoying it). 1. Yikes. Her teeth are apparently sharper than I thought, to shear clean through the joint like that (I mean, I know she bit Duane's fingers off back in the first chapter, but it's not like Duane's body parts are that well attached).

So I read all of Cucumber Quest and here's my thoughts.

1) I like the general setting! Very Paper Mario what with the themes and the fun little NPC type characters and such.

2) I like the characters (for the most part) each of them seem to be pretty good and the outright unlikable ones (the dad/mom) are at least painted as such. However...

3) The plot does something I generally find annoying a lot of the times in games or stories. In that it references cliche's and stereotypes in fantasy sometimes but then also plays it straight other times so the plot feels a bit uneven in theme and tone. If it's trying to be a straight up parody of the Collection-Style Paper Mario RPG "find the seven crystals" plotline then the moments of serious or legitimate character interaction run the risk of coming off insincere or hollow and if it's trying to be a serious and epic tale then the transparency of it all as well as the moments of acknowledging the 4th wall and metaness of it all serves to once again cheapen or hollow out the drama or characters.

It's not an easy balance to hit and THANKFULLY Cucumber Quest is keeping away from falling too hard on either side thus far but I can tell that this comic could very easily run the risk of falling to either wayside in the proceeding comics especially if this plot is anything like I think it is (that the Noisemaster arc revealed).

I dunno it's good THUS FAR but knowing that we have 5 more worlds to go through with this comic as well as the inevitable climax I'm really just concerned about where this comic can go from here. If its sort of blown its load too much already or if its going to go off too far in either direction.

I'm exciting to see where it's going! But I'm also kinda nervous about where it might wind up.
