This seems set closer to the events of ATLA, so unless Toph suddenly popped out Lin out of the blue I doubt the girl Suki is teaching will be anyone from LoK.

I wholly welcome more Suki and especially more Sukka. That pairing doesn't get the love it deserves in fanon.

Sokka hit all the tiers so people lost interest, same may happen with Korrawhomever within the next two. Regardless I'm up for a nice little classic story. I'll have to see who's carrying in my area.

It's nice to see Suki get some focus, though I'm still annoyed by how little attention was paid to her during The Promise's latter parts.

Wasn't the last FCBD about Mai?

Though, we're never going to get one about Ty Lee. No one involved in the comics care enough about her.

Well the problem with Suki and Sokka is that in a world of benders stories about non-benders are less interesting (because they're usually fighting with weapons rather than "magic").

They're also less relevant from an overall story perspective because the main focus of these comics involves tying up all the lose ends between the end of ATLA and start of Korra. So a story about two characters who so far haven't had any influence in Korra isn't as relevant as explaining how the Fire Nation colonies become Republic City or how Aang plans to increase the number of Airbenders.

>the main focus of these comics involves tying up all the lose ends between the end of ATLA and start of Korra

[citation needed]

There's nothing stopping the creators from simply telling a short post-canon story about a couple of characters. Not everything is tied to Korra. This is 10 pages about Suki giving encouragement to a random young girl, there's no huge overarching plot point at stake here.

>in a world of benders stories about non-benders are less interesting
I've never felt that. I think the concept of bending is really interesting arguably the franchise's strongest selling point, but I've never found characters more interesting than others simply because some are benders and others aren't. Non-bending action scenes can still be great, Zuko v Jet in Ba Sing Se was one of my favorite fights and it was purely swordplay, same goes for Sokka v Piandao.

While I find the benders typically way more interesting than the non-benders (and yeah the bending does contribute to it), it's not like the people who can't bend aren't interesting themselves, and they've done a good job for the most part making up for their lack of bending when it comes to fighting.

>Suki is a member of the Kyoshi Warriors, a centuries-old organization of women warriors. Bryan Konietzko and Mike DiMartino, the creators of Avatar, told Faith and me about how the Kyoshi Warriors were founded. They'd come up with the concept while working on the original animated series, but were never able to incorporate it into any of the episodes. Faith and I are happy to be able to share at least a small piece of it in our story. That's one of the reasons I love Avatar. Mike, Bryan, and their team built such an elaborate world, with a deep history and an even deeper mythology. There's so much behind what we saw on our television screens.

I think that was kinda mentioned in the post-S2 game where Aang had to reconnect with the Avatar Spirit. Dunno, the Avatar Wiki seems set on the idea that each trilogy is roughly 12 months apart, I don't know where they got that idea but it'd make Aang and Toph 15, Katara 17 and Sokka 18, though would Ursa really wait a year before visiting her Son? Maybe, I guess.

That shit up there is honestly just someone straight up tracing over a picture of modern truck loading silos. See picture. It may even be more far more simple a design than that other shit, but it doesn't fit the established style of Avatar technology.

You're focusing on bullshit tangible details that don't even cause any problems with the world that's already been established. We know for a fact that the Fire Nation have fairly advanced metallurgical skills, which means making objects like those, or like the fences in the image we're arguing about, are well within the realm of possibility for them. So if it's not physically impossible for these things to exist, what exactly is your argument? "The architecture's different than what I'm used to?"

Seriously, if you love nitpicking this much, you need to learn to do it better. Like start by learning to identify what the actual problems with the story or the art, rather than focusing on things that have nothing to do with how well a story works.

The Rebound > this and I'm disappointed as Suki is one of my favorites.

Mai rescued her brother from her delusional father's clutches in the heart of a pro-Ozai underground militia.

Suki beat up a couple of hapless caricatures of socially dysfunctional neckbeards because they got buttmad about a girl that walked into their shop.

Boiling Rock part 2 still remains my favorite Suki moment.

Eh, thought that it was cute, personally. Both in art style (I liked her The Last of Us prequel) and story.

Personally I think that it's hilarious that while Dark Horse release a story for FCBD about feminism with an added side-order of how some comicbook fans are dicks, DC just decided to have 20 pages of their characters being gruesomely murdered and maimed.

My one complaint is that Kyoshi was too short, wasn't she seven foot? Maybe this was when she was a teenager or something?

Honestly I think this just reinforces the idea that Suki doesn't have much of a character outside of being Sokka's girlfriend and being a walking lesson on sexism. Not that the latter is bad, just because ATLA said 'sexism is bad' doesn't mean they should stop with their extended content, but they could have done it without Suki because this is all she has going for her. They could have just done a straight up origin about the Kyoshi warriors instead.

I got to my store's FCBD at 2:00 since I went into work at 9:00, a full hour after they're even open, and the DC one was one of the very few left.

I like me some Batman Beyond, yes...but not that nonsense.

And yeah, I was also a little "eh" on the story. I remember seeing one person on Livejournal years ago who complained that Mai's reasons for betraying Azula were, ever so slightly, sexist.

I know. But this was kinda before the super-rush of Tumblr's particular brand of this, they actually made a few decent points. Didn't really agree, but it was something to think about.

Last year's FCBD gave us a glimpse of Mai without Zuko. Showed us she does care about her family, but also didn't care for the 100-Year War or nationalism, so it's some fleshing out I think she needed.

Maybe Suki'll get her own comic soon, we can only hope.
>> No. 117162
>>117161
I think Mai betraying Azula for Zuko would only really be sexist if Azula was genuinely a good person. We never really got instances of Mai being afraid of Azula (though some people have speculated Mai had originally intended to go through with the trade in Return to Omashu before Azula spoke up), but she does say, "I love Zuko more than I fear you", so I guess there was something there.
>> No. 117164
